TWC keeps delaying my approval - about to lose my car and worried about kids' school transportation
I'm really confused about how TWC unemployment works. If I get approved, is the money coming from what I've already earned somehow, or is it money that Texas gives out? They're taking FOREVER to approve my claim and I'm wondering if they're just holding MY money hostage. I'm in a desperate situation - about to lose my car which is the only way I can get my kids to school. I've been job hunting like crazy (19 applications in just one month) and I'm fully qualified for these positions but haven't heard back from anyone. My savings are completely gone now. Does TWC purposely delay approvals? I don't understand why it's taking so long when I need this money NOW, not whenever they decide to approve me.

TWC benefits aren't your money - it's an insurance program employers pay into. When you're approved, you receive benefits based on your previous wages. The approval delays are frustrating but normal right now. Have you tried calling them directly? I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a TWC agent after trying for 2 weeks with busy signals. They connected me in 25 minutes - check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. Hope this helps with your situation!

•Thanks, I had no idea it was an insurance program. So even though the amount is based on what I earned, it's not actually MY money they're holding back? And I'll def check out Claimyr - I've been calling so many times and just get the busy signal over and over.

•7 WEEKS?? I'm already about to lose my car in 2 weeks! Is there ANY way to speed things up? I'm doing all my work searches but I'm running out of time...

The money comes from the State Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund, which employers pay into - not from your past wages. TWC approval times can be frustrating but are typically 21-28 days for straightforward claims. Continued delays often mean there's an issue they're investigating. You should: 1. Keep requesting payments every two weeks even while waiting for approval 2. Document all your work search activities in detail 3. Check your correspondence inbox daily for any requests for information 4. Make sure you've completed your ID.me verification if required Regarding your car situation, explain this to TWC when you reach them - in some cases, they can expedite claims with documented hardships. Have documentation ready about your car payment/repossession notice.

•Thank you for explaining! I had no idea about expediting for hardships. I've been requesting payments and documenting everything, but I didn't know about the ID.me thing - where do I check if that's required for me? Also, do you know if there's a specific department I should ask for when calling about hardship expediting?

I feel your pain! When I was waiting for my TWC approval last year I almost lost my apartment. The system is so broken :

Common misconception about unemployment! The benefits are NOT your money being held back - it's completely funded by employer taxes. Most claims are taking 2-3 weeks currently for approval IF there are no issues. Longer waits usually indicate there's a problem with your claim that needs resolving. Possible issues slowing your claim: - Employment separation issues (did you quit or were fired?) - Wage verification problems - Work authorization verification - ID.me identity verification incomplete - Missing documentation If you're facing vehicle repossession, you should: 1. Contact your lender immediately to explain and request forbearance 2. Try reaching TWC through their social media channels (sometimes faster) 3. Contact your state representative's office - they often have direct lines to TWC 4. Continue your work search efforts and document everything Hope this helps! TWC will backpay from your claim effective date once approved.

•This is really helpful information! I was laid off (downsizing), so I don't think there should be separation issues. I never thought about contacting my state rep - that's a good idea. Would you happen to know how to find my rep's contact info?

I had good results with Claimyr too when I needed to talk to TWC about my delayed claim. Regular calling was useless - busy signals for days. The service got me through to an actual person who found a flag on my account that needed to be removed. Worth every penny since I was about to miss a mortgage payment. BTW - for your car situation, also try calling 211 (Texas Health and Human Services) as they sometimes have emergency assistance programs for transportation needs while you wait for unemployment to come through.

Find your state representative here: https://house.texas.gov/members/find-your-representative/ They helped me when my claim was stuck for over a month! I emailed my rep with my name, contact info, and last 4 of SSN, plus a brief explanation of my hardship. Their office contacted TWC directly and my claim was approved within 48 hours after waiting for 5 weeks previously. Keep documenting those job applications! 19 in a month is good but make sure you're hitting at least 3 per week as required by TWC.

•Thank you so much for the link! I'm going to email my rep right away. And yes, I'm definitely doing at least 3 applications every week - I need a job desperately!

The Texas unemployment system is INTENTIONALLY BROKEN to discourage claims!!! I waited 9 weeks last year and almost became homeless. They don't care about our suffering AT ALL. The politicians want to keep unemployment numbers artificially low by making it impossible to get benefits!!!! It's all a SCAM!!!

•While the system certainly has issues, delays are most often due to understaffing and high claim volumes rather than intentional obstruction. TWC eventually processes valid claims, though the wait can certainly be difficult. Let's focus on giving practical advice to help the original poster navigate the system.

Update: I want to thank everyone for all the helpful advice! I emailed my state representative yesterday with details about my hardship situation. I also tried Claimyr this morning and actually got through to a TWC agent! They found that my claim was delayed because of an employer response issue - my former employer hadn't confirmed the reason for separation. The agent expedited my claim review due to my hardship situation with documentation I provided about my car. They said I should see a determination within 3-5 business days! I'm still nervous but at least feeling hopeful now. I'll keep doing my work searches while I wait.

•This is excellent news! The employer response delay is actually one of the most common causes of claim processing delays. Once they receive that information (or the response period expires), your claim should move forward quickly. Keep following up if you don't see movement within the timeframe they promised.
