How long does TWC mail first unemployment check after payment request?

Just got laid off from my warehouse position about 2.5 weeks ago. Filed my claim online right after and it got approved pretty quick. I completed my first payment request last night through the TWC website and selected to receive a paper check (didn't want to do direct deposit). Anyone know approximately how long it takes for that first unemployment check to arrive in the mail? Getting a little anxious since rent's coming up soon and my savings aren't great. Thanks!

The first check typically takes a bit longer than subsequent ones. For paper checks, expect around 7-10 business days from your payment request date. If you requested payment last night, I'd anticipate receiving it sometime next week. Just make sure your mailing address is correct in the TWC system! Also, just so you know, direct deposit is significantly faster (usually 2-3 business days) if you want to switch for future payments.

Thanks for the info! Didn't realize it would take that long. Do you know if I can switch to direct deposit for future payments even though I already selected paper check for this first one?

You might be waiting a LONG time! My first check took almost 3 WEEKS to arrive after my payment request. TWC is seriously the worst with their paper mail. The system said it was processed but took FOREVER to actually show up in my mailbox. I missed a car payment waiting for it. The mail system in Texas is basically broken when it comes to unemployment checks.

Wow, 3 weeks is crazy long! Was that recently? I got my first check in about 8 days last month, but I'm in the Austin area - maybe it depends on where you live?

Oh no, that's concerning. Did you have to call TWC to report the lost check? I'm hoping mine doesn't get lost too.

has anyone found a good way to actually get through to TWC on the phone? i'm having a similar issue with my check not arriving and i've been calling for 3 days straight with no luck... just busy signals or being on hold forever and then getting disconnected. so frustrating!

I found a service called Claimyr that helped me connect with a TWC agent after trying for days. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh I used it when I needed to fix an issue with my work search requirements, and actually got through to a human who helped.

This happened to me back in January! I had selected check for my first payment then realized direct deposit would be faster. You can absolutely change it for future payments. Just log into your TWC account, go to Payment Option, and select Direct Deposit instead of Check. Won't affect the current payment that's processing but all future ones will go to your bank account. Made a huge difference in how quickly I got paid!

Perfect, just updated my payment preference to direct deposit for future payments. Thanks for the tip!

I had a similar situation last month. My first check took exactly 8 business days to arrive in my mailbox. I requested payment on a Tuesday and received it the following Friday. Make sure you're completing your work search activities while you wait (3 per week in Texas) and documenting them correctly! I almost messed that up and could have lost benefits. Also, if you need to track the status of your payment, you can call the TWC Tele-Serv system at 800-558-8321 and use option 2, then 1 to check if your payment has been processed.

omg the work search activities stressed me out so much last year. i thought any job application counted but apparently some don't qualify?? my cousin got in trouble for listing indeed applications that she couldn't prove. so confusing!

My first check arrived in exactly 12 days after requesting. But the second one came in just 5 days for some reason. The TWC system is just weird like that sometimes.

That's good to know! Fingers crossed mine arrives sooner rather than later. I'll give it at least 10 business days before I start worrying too much.
