Can I submit my TWC payment request while working part-time for only 2 days?
I just started a new job last Thursday and only worked Thursday and Friday (about 16 hours total) of that pay period. My regular TWC payment request day is coming up tomorrow. Can I still submit my payment request and just report those 2 days of work? I'm worried if I miss my request day, I'll lose benefits completely. I'm still actively looking for full-time work since this new position only guaranteed me 2-3 shifts per week initially. Will TWC consider this partial employment or will they cut off my benefits completely once I report any work at all?

Yes, you absolutely can and should submit your payment request on your regular request day! This is exactly what partial unemployment is designed for. Just make sure you accurately report: 1. The days you worked (Thursday and Friday) 2. The exact number of hours (sounds like 16 total) 3. The gross wages before any deductions TWC will use their formula to determine how much benefit you're still eligible for. Since you're only working part-time, you'll likely still receive some benefits. Just be aware your weekly benefit amount will be reduced based on your earnings. But definitely don't skip your request day!

•Thank you! Do I report the hours on my payment request even if I haven't actually been paid yet? My first paycheck won't come until next Friday.

The Texas Workforce Commission is NOTORIOUS for flagging accounts that suddenly stop requesting payments without explanation. If you miss your request day, you'll have to call and request a payment submission backdating which is IMPOSSIBLE to do right now with their phone lines always busy!!! DEFINITELY request your payment and report your work. They'll just deduct whatever percentage from your weekly benefit amount. If you earned too much, you'll get $0 for that week but you'll STILL BE ACTIVE in the system which is what matters!!!

•That's really good to know. I definitely don't want to lose my active status since this job might not give me enough hours consistently.

I think you have to make under a certain amount to still qualify? My cousin started working part time and once she hit like 25 hours they cut her off completely. Just be prepared for that possibility.

•This isn't quite accurate. TWC doesn't automatically cut you off at a specific hour threshold. They use a formula based on your weekly benefit amount. You can work part-time and still receive partial benefits as long as your gross earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount plus 25%. For example, if your WBA is $400, you can earn up to $500 and still receive reduced benefits.

When I had to deal with this last year, I found it impossible to reach someone at TWC to answer these kinds of questions. Kept getting busy signals for days! I eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a rep quickly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh The agent explained exactly how to report part-time work and walked me through the whole thing. Totally worth it instead of stressing for days about whether I was doing it right.

•I've been thinking about trying something like that. The TWC phone lines are a nightmare. I'll check out that video, thanks!

This is one of the most common questions TWC claimants have, so I'll try to simplify: 1. Yes, file your payment request on your regular day (very important) 2. Report ALL work hours for the claim period, even if not paid yet 3. Report GROSS wages (before taxes/deductions) 4. TWC uses a specific formula: You can earn up to 25% of your WBA without reduction, then they reduce your benefit $1 for each $1 earned above that threshold 5. Continue requesting payments every two weeks even with part-time work 6. Continue doing your required 3 work search activities each week If your part-time job becomes full-time (30+ hours consistently), then you would likely no longer qualify, but for sporadic part-time work, you should maintain your claim and report accurately.

•THIS is the correct answer. I wish TWC would just explain this clearly on their website instead of making everyone guess how the system works!!! So frustrating.

hey i just went thru this exact situation last month! i got hired at HEB but only for like 3 days a week. just put in your request like normal. on the day you certify, it asks if you worked. say yes, put the days and how much you made (before taxes!!!). you'll still get some unemployment probably unless you made a ton of money in those 2 days. DON'T SKIP YOUR REQUEST DAY no matter what!!!

•Thank you! It's so helpful to hear from someone who just went through this. I'll definitely submit on my regular day tomorrow.

By the way, here's another CRITICAL detail no one mentioned: when you report your work, TWC will probably put your next payment on HOLD and they'll send you a questionnaire about your new job. This is STANDARD PROCEDURE but scares everyone! You MUST fill it out within 7 days or they'll disqualify you. It asks about your new job, hours, pay, if it's temp or permanent, etc. Answer HONESTLY and you'll be fine!

•Oh wow, I had no idea about this questionnaire! Thank you for the heads up. I'll watch for it and make sure to complete it right away.

•Yes, that form is the Request for Work Information. It's how TWC determines if your new employment affects your continued eligibility. Definitely complete it immediately when received. If your work is truly part-time and temporary, make sure to clearly indicate this on the form.

•Yeah it depends on how much they make vs their benefit amount. My cousin works at Target and once she hit like 4 shifts they cut her off even tho it wasnt full time. The whole system is rigged if u ask me.
