ESD weekly claim question: Working Friday (Feb 16) only - will benefits be reduced?

Really confused about how to handle my weekly claim for Feb 11-17. I just got a new job (yay!) but my first day is Friday, Feb 16th. Then I'm not scheduled again until Monday the 19th. Do I report that I worked on my weekly claim for the 11-17th period even though I won't get paid until the next pay period? And will my benefit amount be reduced just for working one day that week? I'm worried about messing this up and getting hit with an overpayment later. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

yes u do need to report that u worked, even if u haven't been paid yet. ESD goes by when u WORKED not when u got paid.

Thanks! Do you know if my weekly benefit will be reduced by a lot for just one day of work?

You absolutely need to report the work when you performed it, not when you get paid. For your weekly claim covering Feb 11-17, you'll report that you worked on Feb 16th. As for your benefit amount, ESD will reduce your weekly benefit based on your earnings. They use a formula where they deduct 75% of your earnings from your weekly benefit amount. So if you only worked one day that week, your benefit reduction would be relatively small compared to working the entire week. Be sure to accurately report your hours worked and gross earnings (before taxes/deductions) for that day. Even if you estimate the earnings, you can correct it later if needed. It's much better to report correctly now than deal with an overpayment notice later!

Thank you so much for explaining the 75% formula! That helps a lot. I'll make sure to report the hours even though I won't have my exact pay amount yet.

Just adding to what others said - if you don't know your exact pay yet, provide your best estimate based on your hourly rate × hours worked. You can always contact ESD later to correct it if the actual amount is different. Also, make sure you answer "yes" to the question about whether you worked during the week. Then enter the hours for that Friday. Most importantly, keep claiming until your new job becomes full-time (if it is). Many people mistakenly stop claiming as soon as they get a job offer, but you're still eligible for partial benefits until you're working full-time hours.

That's really helpful about the partial benefits! I wasn't sure if I should keep claiming once I started the job. It's full-time but since I'm starting mid-week I'll definitely claim for this transition week.

I had this EXACT problem last month! ESD's system is so frustrating. I spent TWO DAYS trying to reach someone at ESD to clarify how to report my first day of work! Their phone system is completely broken. I'd call right when they opened and still got the "call volume too high" message. Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an ESD agent in like 20 minutes. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Anyway, the agent confirmed what everyone here is saying - you report based on when you WORKED, not when you get paid. And yes, your benefit gets reduced by a formula but not by the full amount you earn.

Is that Claimyr thing legit? I've been trying to reach ESD for WEEKS about my adjudication issue. Seems sketchy that a third party can get you through when no one else can...

Yeah it's legit. My cousin used it first and told me about it. Basically they use some kind of system to keep dialing until they get through, then transfer you. Was worth it for me since I was about to lose my mind with the constant busy signals.

NEVER lie on your claim!! Always report ANY work even one hour because ESD will eventually find out through employer tax reports and then you'll be forced to pay everything back plus penalties! Happened to my roomate and it was a complete nightmare!!!! Just be honest about the one day you worked and you'll be fine!!

another thing - i think someone else kinda said this but make sure u keep filing claims until ur working full time (32+ hrs). u can still get partial benefits if ur hours are low at first

Just to add one more important detail - when reporting your work activity, you'll need to enter your hours and gross earnings (before any deductions). For the earnings, use your hourly rate × hours worked that day if you don't have a pay stub yet. Remember that ESD considers you to be "unemployed" for that week if you work less than full-time hours AND your earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount + $5 (or 15% of your weekly benefit, whichever is greater). So with only one day of work, you should still receive a significant portion of your benefits for that week.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll calculate my earnings based on my hourly rate and make sure to report it correctly.
