Won my PA UC appeal hearing - what happens next with back payments?

Guys I'm literally shaking right now!!! Just got an email saying that I WON my unemployment appeal after 2 months of stressing about it. My employer tried claiming I violated company policy but the referee sided with me! I was starting to lose all hope and was down to my last $247. So now I'm wondering what happens next? Will they automatically release all my backpay (about $4,800) or do I need to contact someone? Will it come on my Money Network card that I already have or do they send a check? How long does it typically take after winning an appeal? I really need this money to catch up on my electric bill and car payment that are both 6 weeks overdue.

First off CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉 Winning an appeal is a big deal! I went through something similar last year. Here's what to expect: 1. They should release your backpay automatically within 2-3 weeks, though sometimes it can take longer 2. The money will go to whatever payment method you set up (your Money Network card) 3. You'll probably need to file any missed weekly certifications if you haven't been doing them during the appeal process 4. You might get a letter in the mail confirming the decision before you see the money If you don't see movement in your claim status within 5 business days, I'd recommend reaching out to the UC service center to make sure everything's processing correctly.

Thank you!! I've been filing my weekly claims this whole time even though they were all showing as "pending - unresolved issues" in my portal. So hopefully that means I dont have to do anything extra. My landlord has been super patient but I cant push him much longer...

when i won my appeal it took like 3 weeks to get paid. but my buddy got his in like 5 days so seems pretty random tbh

That's a pretty big range! Did you have to keep calling them or anything to nudge it along?

This is EXACTLY why I tell everyone to keep filing their weekly certifications even during appeals! The system is rigged against us but you did it right. Be prepared for them to still mess something up tho. PA unemployment is NOTORIOUS for making people wait forever after appeals. Had a coworker who won his appeal and then had to wait 45 days because they "needed to verify his identity" again suddenly. It's like they punish you for winning!

That's not entirely accurate. While there can be delays, they're generally not intentional. Appeals decisions need to be processed through multiple departments, which is why there's sometimes a waiting period. The system isn't perfect, but there's no evidence they deliberately delay payments after successful appeals.

LOL sure keep believing that! I've been through the system 3 times and every single time they find some new ridiculous excuse to hold money. It's designed to make people give up.

congrats on winning! quick question - was your hearing in person or over the phone? mine's coming up next week and i'm super nervous

Mine was over the phone. The referee was actually really nice and let me fully explain my side. Just be honest, stay calm, and have any documents ready that support your case. Good luck!!

When I won my appeal last year, I had a 10-day wait while the decision was being "processed" but then all my backpay hit my Money Network card at once. Keep filing your weekly claims correctly during this time! One thing to prepare for: if your employer decides to appeal the referee's decision (they have 15 days to do this), it could delay things further. You'll be notified if they do this. If you don't see your payments change from "pending" to "paid" within a week, I'd recommend trying to contact the UC office directly. I know their phone lines are nearly impossible to get through to, but I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me actually reach a human at the UC office. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Saved me hours of redial frustration.

Omg I didn't even think about them appealing the appeal... now I'm worried all over again. I really hope they don't do that. Thanks for the tip about that service - I might need it if things don't move soon!

My cousin just won his appeal and he got all his backpay in exactly 8 days. But he said they sent him a letter first and then the money came 2 days after that. Check your mailbox!

To add some clarification about what happens after winning an appeal: 1. The referee's decision is sent to the UC Service Center for processing (typically 3-7 business days) 2. Your claim is updated to remove the disqualification 3. Any eligible weeks you've certified for will be processed for payment 4. Payment is issued to your Money Network card or direct deposit, whichever you set up If your employer does not appeal within 15 days, the decision becomes final. As others mentioned, continue filing your weekly certifications during this period. One important note: if your appeal was about a specific issue but there are other unresolved issues on your claim, those would still need to be addressed before payment can be released. You can check if there are other issues by logging into your dashboard.

Thank you for the detailed info! I just checked and there are no other issues showing on my dashboard, just the original one about the alleged misconduct that was just resolved. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly from here!

did you get a letter in the mail or just an email? sometimes the emails are scams so be careful

It was an official email from the PA UC system, the same one that's been sending me notices all along. But thanks for looking out! I'll keep an eye on my mail for the official letter.

Just checking back - any updates? Has your payment status changed yet?

0 coins

YES!!! All my pending payments switched to "paid" status this morning!!! The portal says the payment was issued today, so I'm guessing it'll hit my Money Network card in 2-3 business days. I'm so relieved I could cry. Thanks everyone for all your help and advice!

That's amazing news! 🎉 So happy to hear your payments switched to "paid" status - that's the hardest part behind you now. The Money Network card usually processes pretty quickly, so you should see that money in your account soon. What a relief that must be after all that stress! Make sure to keep filing your weekly claims going forward to avoid any future issues. Congrats on fighting the good fight and winning!
