PA UC appeal decision reversed in my favor! How do I get my 8 weeks of backpay?
Just got the BEST news today! After fighting with PA unemployment for nearly 3 months, my appeal decision finally came through and they reversed my initial disqualification!! I'm actually eligible for benefits! My former employer had claimed I quit but I was able to prove I was laid off due to department restructuring. So what happens next?? I have 8 weeks of back payments due from December through January (I started a new job beginning of February). Do these payments just automatically show up on my Money Network card? Do I need to file something special to trigger the backpay? Anyone been through this appeals reversal process before? I'm honestly in shock that I actually won my appeal. The hearing examiner seemed pretty skeptical during my phone hearing.

Congrats on winning your appeal! I went through something similar last year. The back payments don't come automatically - you need to reopen your weekly certifications for those missed weeks. Log into your PA UC account, go to the 'File Biweekly Claim' section, and there should be an option for filing backdated weeks. It might take 2-3 weeks to actually see the money after you do that. One tip: make sure you have your job search records for those weeks ready in case they ask!

•Thank you SO much!! I had no idea I needed to file those backdated weeks. I thought they would just automatically know I was owed that money. Will try to do this tonight. Do you remember if there was a time limit for filing those backdated weeks? I'm worried since it's been a few months.

DO NOT WAIT to file those backdated claims!!! The system only gives you like 2 weeks from your appeal decision to file backdated weeks or you could LOSE all that money!!! Happened to my brother last year and he never got paid even tho he won his appeal!!! PA UC system is completely BROKEN!

•OMG seriously?? Now I'm panicking. The decision letter is dated 4/12 so that means I might only have a few days left! Does anyone know exactly how many days they give you??

Hey there - just to clarify some info. You actually have 14 days from the date you RECEIVE the appeal decision (not the date on the letter) to file those backdated biweekly claims. So you should be fine if you just got the letter. When you log in to your dashboard, you should see a notification about filing for those weeks. If you don't see that option, there might be an issue in the system not recognizing your appeal decision yet. If that happens, you'll need to call the UC service center to have them manually activate those weeks for you.

•Ok that makes me feel a bit better. I just logged in and I don't see any notification about backdated weeks though. Ugh guess I'll have to call them tomorrow.

•That's interesting! Maybe the rules changed recently? Or maybe it depends on what type of appeal it was? Mine was specifically about eligibility due to job separation reason.

If you need to call the UC service center about filing those backdated weeks, you should try using Claimyr. I spent days trying to get through to PA unemployment after my appeal and kept getting busy signals. Found this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Totally worth it since I needed to get my backdated weeks filed before the deadline. The UC rep was able to open all my backdated weeks at once.

@profile8 Yes, it's legitimate. I was skeptical too but it worked for me. The service basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. I was worried about the deadline for filing my backdated weeks so I gave it a try.

•I'll definitely check this out if I can't get through tomorrow. The deadline thing has me really worried. Does anyone know if I need to have my job search records ready for each of those backdated weeks? I wasn't keeping track because I thought I was disqualified...

Regarding your job search records - yes, technically you're supposed to have completed and documented your work search activities for each week you're claiming, even during the appeal process. However, in practice, the system usually just asks you to certify that you completed them when you file the backdated weeks. If your appeal specifically determined you were eligible due to the nature of your separation (laid off vs. quit), they probably won't scrutinize your work search records too heavily. But it's always good to have something to show if they ask. You can create a record now of places you applied during that time if you remember.

•That's really helpful, thank you. I did apply to a few places during that time but wasn't documenting it properly. I'll try to recreate what I can from my email records of applications.

Just wanted to say congrats on winning your appeal! I've been fighting my own appeal for 10 weeks now and still waiting. It's so frustrating. Did you have a lawyer for your hearing or did you represent yourself?

•I just represented myself. My advice is to gather as much documentation as possible. I had emails from my manager about the department restructuring that really helped my case. Good luck with your appeal!

Quick update on my earlier comment - when you file those backdated weeks, make sure you answer the questions exactly the same way you would have at the time. Like if they ask if you were able and available to work, say yes (assuming you were). The system might flag your claim for review if your answers don't make sense for someone who was unemployed at the time. Also, once you do get all your backdated weeks processed, the payments usually come all at once, not spread out. So be on the lookout for a larger deposit to your Money Network card.

•This is super helpful! I just managed to get through to someone at the UC center (had to call right when they opened at 8am). They said my appeal decision is in the system but there was some kind of flag that needed to be removed before I could access the backdated weeks. Should be able to file them by tomorrow. So relieved I didn't miss the deadline!
