Stuck in PA UC Review for a Month - Can't Job Hunt Without Basic Expenses

I'm so frustrated with PA unemployment right now. My former employer closed our division and transferred everyone except me to other locations. They never offered me a position at their other sites even though I had good reviews. I was laid off 4 weeks ago, filed for UC immediately, and my claim is STILL showing 'in review' status. I've called the UC office 18 times and can't get through to anyone. How am I supposed to look for work when I can't even pay for basic needs? My rent is due in 10 days, my car is almost out of gas, and I'm eating ramen to stretch my last $40. This feels like a cruel joke - they want us to be actively job searching but won't release funds so we can actually get to interviews? Has anyone else been stuck in this review limbo? How long did it take before your benefits started coming through?

6 WEEKS?! I can't survive that long without income. Did you have to do anything special to get it approved finally?

There's usually a reason your claim is stuck in review. The most common are: 1. Your employer contested the separation (meaning they told UC you weren't eligible) 2. There's a discrepancy in your employment/wage information 3. You answered a question in a way that triggered an automatic review 4. There's a verification issue with your identity Have you received any notices in your dashboard or mail explaining what the issue is? And are you still filing your weekly claims even though you're not getting paid? That's important - you need to keep doing that.

Thanks for the help. I haven't gotten ANY notices at all - my dashboard just says "in review" with no explanation. And yes, I've been filing weekly claims every Sunday. My former employer shouldn't be contesting it since they're the ones who didn't offer me a position when they closed our location.

Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual UC agent. It saved me so much frustration after being stuck with an "in review" status for weeks. The service gets you past the busy signals so you can talk to someone who can actually look at your claim and tell you what's happening. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 For me, it turned out there was a wage verification issue that wasn't showing on my dashboard, and the agent fixed it while I was on the phone. Got my payments starting the next week.

I was in exactly the same boat last summer. Claim stuck in review for 5 weeks with zero explanation. Here's what worked for me: 1. Contact your state representative's office. They have special channels to UC and can often get things moving. This is FREE. 2. Check that your employer didn't incorrectly report your separation reason. My employer incorrectly coded me as "quit" when I was actually laid off. 3. Make sure you're entering your work search activities correctly each week. If you make mistakes here, it can hold up your claim. 4. If all else fails, request an "expedited financial hardship review" - specifically use those words. Document that you're facing eviction, utility shutoff, or inability to buy food. Keep filing those weekly claims! When they finally approve the claim, you'll get all the back payments at once.

Thank you so much for these details! I didn't know about contacting my state rep or requesting that expedited review. I'll try both of those tomorrow. My landlord is already sending me warning notices about late rent.

i got approved after 3 weeks by emailing uchelp@pa.gov with my claim number and a brief explanation of my hardship. put "URGENT FINANCIAL HARDSHIP" in the subject line. got a response within 2 days and payment 3 days after that. worth a try

In my experience with PA UC system (and I've unfortunately had to use it twice in the past 3 years), the biggest issue is often a COMPLETE LACK OF COMMUNICATION on their part. Your claim could be held up for something simple they need to verify, but they won't tell you what it is!!!! It's absolutely maddening. Have you checked if you passed the ID.me verification? That tripped me up last time. Also, check if your previous employer responded to the separation information request PA UC sent them. If they're slow to respond or haven't responded at all, that will keep your claim in review limbo. I HATE how they expect people to job search without giving them the resources to do so. How are you supposed to put gas in your car to get to interviews? It's a broken system that punishes people who WANT TO WORK.

I passed the ID.me verification when I first applied, so that part should be good. I hadn't thought about checking if my employer responded though - is there a way to see that in the system?

Unfortunately you can't see if your employer responded in the system. Only a UC rep can tell you that, which means you need to GET THROUGH on the phone (nearly impossible) or use one of the other methods people suggested. The whole system is designed to be frustrating. It's like they WANT people to give up.

I just wanted to follow up - how is your claim going? Were you able to get it resolved?

Thank you for checking back! I ended up using the Claimyr service to get through to someone after my state rep's office said it would take 7-10 business days just to look into my case. The UC agent told me my former employer had classified me as a "voluntary quit" even though they closed my workplace! They helped me file a dispute and expedited the review because of my financial hardship. Just got approved yesterday and should get my first payment (including 5 weeks of back pay) on Monday. What a relief! Now I can actually focus on finding a job instead of panicking about eviction.
