PA UC weekly certifications showing 'in progress' but claim still under review - what do statuses mean?
Hey everyone, I'm really confused about my PA unemployment claim status. I just completed my third weekly certification yesterday and I noticed something weird with the statuses. For the most recent two weeks, it says 'in progress' but for the first week it says 'not applicable.' Meanwhile, my actual claim shows it's still 'under review' until January 9th, 2025. I'm not sure what to make of all this! Is having the 'in progress' status for my payments a good sign that things are moving forward? Or does the 'under review' status mean I won't see any money until after the 9th? This is my first time filing for unemployment after being laid off from my warehouse job and I'm starting to stress about bills coming due.

the in progress is usually a good sign. it means they got ur weekly cert and its being processed. not applicable for week 1 could be bc of the waiting week, u dont get paid for the 1st week in PA. under review just means they havent made final determination on ur claim yet. u can still get paid for weeks while claim is under review IF theres no open issues

•Thanks for responding! So you think I might still get paid for weeks 2 and 3 before the review is complete? I'm just worried because I have rent due on the 5th and was hoping the money would come through by then.

In' progress generally means your weekly certifications are being processed, which is a positive sign. 'The not' applicable for week one is normal - Pennsylvania has a waiting week requirement, so you'don t receive benefits for your first week of unemployment. This is standard procedure. As for your claim 'being under' review, this means'they re still verifying your eligibility. The important distinction is that the overall claim (status under) review and the payment status for individual ('weeks in') progress are two separate things. You can sometimes receive payments for weekly certifications even while your claim is under review, assuming there are no specific issues with your claim that would prevent payment. I would continue filing your weekly certifications on time. If you'don t receive payment within 5-7 business days of seeing 'the in' progress status, there might be an underlying issue that needsaddressing.

Ugh the waiting game is THE WORST! I had the exact same thing happen last month - all those statuses that don't make any sense and no clear explanation anywhere on the website. PA unemployment system is so frustrating!!!

•Right?? I wish they would just use clear language about what's happening. Did your payments eventually come through?

Let me clarify what these different statuses actually mean: 1. **Claim Under Review** - Your overall unemployment claim eligibility is still being determined. This is regarding whether you qualify for benefits at all. 2. **Weekly Certification Status**: - **In Progress** - Your weekly certification has been received and is being processed for payment - **Not Applicable** - This typically refers to your waiting week (first week of unemployment in PA), which is not payable Pennsylvania's system can pay you for weeks certified while your claim is under review IF: - There are no specific issues with your eligibility - Your employer doesn't contest your claim - Your identity has been verified through ID.me Your January 9th date is likely when they expect to complete the review of your claim. Some people receive payments before final determination, while others must wait until the review is complete. Check your dashboard for any "open issues" - if you don't see any, that increases your chances of being paid while under review.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I checked and don't see any open issues listed, so hopefully that's a good sign. Do you know how long it typically takes for payments to process once the weekly cert shows 'in progress'?

I went through this EXACT THING in November! The first week will always be "not applicable" because that's the waiting week. The "in progress" for weeks 2 and 3 is actually a GOOD sign - it means your certifications were accepted and are being processed. BUT here's the annoying part - even though they SAY under review until the 9th, mine actually got approved way earlier than the date they gave me. The PA UC system always over-estimates these dates. I got my first payment about 10 days after filing even though they said my claim would be under review for 3 weeks!

•That's really encouraging to hear! I didn't realize they might overestimate the timeframe. Did you get a notification when your claim was approved or did the money just show up?

If you're waiting on claim approval and need to speak with an actual human at PA UC, I was in the same boat last month and was going CRAZY trying to get through on the phone. Someone here recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it actually worked - they got me connected with a UC rep in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. The rep was able to tell me exactly why my claim was under review and gave me an ETA for payment. Way better than stressing about what all these statuses mean.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if I don't see any movement by the end of this week. Did the rep actually give you accurate information when you got through?

•Yes, they told me exactly what was happening - in my case, they were verifying my employment history with my previous employer. The timeline they gave me was accurate too. It was definitely worth it to finally get clear answers instead of trying to interpret these vague statuses.

To clarify about the payment timeline: If everything goes smoothly, payments typically hit your Money Network card or direct deposit 2-3 business days after showing 'in progress.' However, if there are verification issues or it's your first payment, it can take 5-7 business days. If you don't see payment by the end of next week, I'd recommend trying to contact UC for clarification. Also, keep fulfilling your weekly work search requirements (applying to at least 2 jobs each week and completing 1 work search activity) while you wait - that's required regardless of your claim status.

•Thank you! I've been keeping up with the work search activities and logging them in the system. Hopefully I'll see movement in the next few days. I appreciate everyone's help explaining this confusing system!

I'm going through something similar right now! Filed my claim 2 weeks ago and just did my second weekly certification yesterday. My claim also shows "under review" but my weekly certs are showing "in progress" too. Reading through all these responses is really helpful - I had no idea about the waiting week thing. It's so stressful not knowing when (or if) the money will come through. I've been laid off from my retail job and trying to stretch my last paycheck as far as possible. Fingers crossed we both see some movement soon! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

•@Sophia Nguyen I m'so glad to hear from someone in the same situation! It really does help to know we re'not alone in this confusing process. The waiting week thing was news to me too - I wish they explained that better upfront. It sounds like you re'just a week behind me in the process, so hopefully we ll'both start seeing some movement soon. The stress of stretching that last paycheck is so real - I m'in the exact same boat with rent coming due. Let s'keep each other posted on any updates! Good luck with everything.

Just wanted to add my experience since I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! The "in progress" status for your weekly certifications is definitely encouraging - it means the system has accepted your certifications and they're being processed for payment. The "not applicable" for week 1 is 100% normal due to PA's waiting week policy. Here's what helped me during the waiting period: I set up text alerts through the PA UC system so I'd get notified immediately when there were any status changes. Also, make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your profile if you haven't already - that can sometimes cause delays if there are any issues with your banking details. The review period can be nerve-wracking, but from what I've seen in this community, most people do get their payments even while the claim is still under review, especially if there are no red flags or contested issues. Keep doing your weekly certifications on time and stay on top of your work search requirements. You're doing everything right! Hang in there - the first payment is always the hardest to wait for, but once it starts flowing it gets much more predictable.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. I just set up the text alerts like you suggested - I had no idea that was an option! My direct deposit info should be good since I double-checked it when I first filed. It's encouraging to know that most people do get paid even during the review period. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're used to having a steady paycheck. I'll keep doing everything I'm supposed to do and try to stay patient. Really appreciate the encouragement!

I just want to echo what others have said about the "in progress" status being a positive sign! I went through this same confusing process earlier this year after being laid off from my manufacturing job. The PA UC system really doesn't do a great job of explaining what all these different statuses mean, which just adds to the stress when you're already worried about bills. From my experience, the "in progress" status for weeks 2 and 3 means your certifications have been accepted and are moving through their payment processing system. Like others mentioned, week 1 showing "not applicable" is completely normal due to the waiting week rule in Pennsylvania. What really helped me was checking my account first thing in the morning and late in the evening - sometimes the status updates happen at odd hours. Also, if you have the ReliaCard (PA's unemployment debit card), you can sign up for balance alerts so you'll know immediately when funds are deposited, even before the UC website updates. The "under review" status for your overall claim can be frustrating, but try not to let it discourage you too much. In my case, I actually received my first payment about a week before my claim review was officially completed. Keep filing those weekly certifications on time no matter what - that's the most important thing you can do right now. Hang in there!

•This is really helpful, thanks for sharing your experience! I didn't know about the ReliaCard balance alerts - that's a great tip. I've been obsessively checking the website multiple times a day, so knowing that updates can happen at odd hours makes me feel less crazy for checking so often lol. It's really encouraging to hear that you got your first payment before the review was completed. I think the hardest part is just not knowing what to expect since this is all new to me. I'll definitely keep up with the weekly certifications no matter what - seems like that's the one thing everyone agrees is crucial. Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm in a very similar situation right now - filed my claim about 3 weeks ago after getting laid off from my construction job, and I've been seeing the same confusing mix of statuses. My claim shows "under review" with a date in mid-January, but my last two weekly certifications show "in progress" while my first week shows "not applicable." Reading through everyone's responses here has been incredibly helpful! I had no idea about the waiting week policy in PA - that explains the "not applicable" status for week 1. It's reassuring to hear from so many people who've been through this exact process and eventually got their payments, even while their claims were still under review. The stress of waiting for that first payment is real, especially with the holidays coming up and bills not stopping. I've been checking the website obsessively too, but it sounds like that's pretty normal for all of us going through this! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and timelines - it really helps to know we're not alone in navigating this confusing system. I'll keep filing my weekly certifications on time and try to be patient. Fingers crossed we all see some movement soon!

•@Sophia Miller I m'so glad you found this thread helpful too! It s'amazing how many of us are going through the exact same confusing experience right now. The construction industry layoffs have been rough this season - I m'sorry you re'dealing with that on top of trying to figure out this complicated UC system. You re'absolutely right about the holiday timing making everything more stressful when bills don t'pause for anything! It really does help to know we re'all obsessively checking our accounts together 😅 I ve'learned so much from everyone s'responses here, especially about the waiting week and how payments can sometimes come through even during the review period. The fact that your weekly certs are showing in "progress sounds" really promising based on what everyone else has shared. Keep doing those weekly certifications religiously - seems like that s'the golden rule everyone agrees on. Hoping we all get some good news soon and can update each other with positive outcomes! This community has been a lifesaver for understanding what s'actually happening.

I'm dealing with almost identical status confusion right now! Filed about 10 days ago after being let go from my customer service job, and I'm seeing the same mix of "under review" for my overall claim and "in progress" for my recent weekly certifications. The "not applicable" for my first week had me really worried until I read everyone's explanations about the waiting week - wish PA would make that clearer upfront! What's been driving me crazy is not knowing if the "in progress" status actually means anything or if it's just stuck there like some people mentioned. But reading through all these experiences is giving me hope that it's actually a good sign. The timeline estimates seem all over the place though - some people got paid in days, others waited weeks or months. I've been doing everything by the book - filing weekly certs on time, logging my job searches, keeping all my info updated. Just hoping I see some movement before my car payment is due next week! Has anyone noticed if there are certain days of the week when payments typically hit? Thanks everyone for sharing your stories - it really helps to know we're all navigating this together!

•@Zoe Dimitriou I totally feel your frustration! I ve'been in this exact same boat for about 3 weeks now and the uncertainty is exhausting. From what I ve'gathered reading everyone s'experiences here, the in "progress status" does seem to be more positive than negative - it means your weekly certs were accepted and are being processed, which is better than having errors or rejections. As for payment timing, I ve'seen people mention that payments often hit on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, usually 2-3 business days after the status changes to in "progress. But" like you said, the timelines are all over the place depending on individual circumstances. The waiting week policy definitely wasn t'clear to me either until everyone here explained it! I m'crossing my fingers that we both see some movement soon. It sounds like you re'doing everything right with the weekly certs and job searches. The car payment stress is so real - I m'in the same situation with rent coming up. At least we know we re'not alone in this confusing process! Keep us posted if you see any changes in your status.

I'm currently going through this exact same situation! Filed my claim about 2 weeks ago after being laid off from my restaurant job, and I'm seeing the exact same status pattern - "under review" for my overall claim but "in progress" for my last two weekly certifications, with "not applicable" for week 1. Reading through everyone's responses has been so helpful and honestly a huge relief! I had no idea about PA's waiting week policy, so that explains the "not applicable" status. The stress of not knowing when (or if) money will come through is keeping me up at night, especially with credit card bills due soon. What's really encouraging is hearing from people like @StardustSeeker and @Rajan Walker who went through the identical process and got their payments even before their claim review was officially completed. The "in progress" status seems to be a genuinely positive sign based on everyone's experiences here. I've been obsessively checking the website multiple times a day too, so it's reassuring to know that's totally normal! I'm going to set up those text alerts that @Rajan Walker mentioned - didn't even know that was an option. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and timelines. This thread is honestly the most helpful resource I've found for understanding what these confusing statuses actually mean. Fingers crossed we all see some good news soon!

•@Nia Thompson I m'so glad you found this thread helpful! It s'incredible how many of us are going through the exact same confusing experience right now. The restaurant industry layoffs have been brutal, and trying to navigate this UC system on top of that stress is overwhelming. I completely understand the sleepless nights worrying about bills - I m'in the same boat with my own financial deadlines looming. What s'been really comforting about reading everyone s'experiences is realizing that the in "progress status" genuinely seems to be a positive indicator, not just the system being stuck. And hearing from people who got their payments before their claim review was completed gives me hope that we might see movement sooner than expected. I definitely recommend setting up those text alerts - it s'such a simple thing but at least you ll'know immediately when something changes instead of constantly refreshing the website. The obsessive checking is so relatable though! This whole process really tests your patience when you re'already stressed about money. Keep doing those weekly certifications religiously and hang in there. Based on everything I ve'read here, it sounds like we re'both on the right track. Hopefully we ll'have some good updates to share with the community soon! This thread has been a lifesaver for my peace of mind.

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! Just filed my claim 10 days ago after getting laid off from my office job, and I'm seeing the identical status pattern - my overall claim shows "under review" until January 12th, but my last two weekly certifications show "in progress" while my first week shows "not applicable." This thread has been absolutely invaluable for understanding what's actually happening! I had no clue about Pennsylvania's waiting week policy until reading everyone's explanations - that completely clarifies why week 1 shows "not applicable." The PA UC website really doesn't explain these things clearly at all. What gives me the most hope is hearing from so many people who received their first payments even while their claims were still under review. The "in progress" status seems to be genuinely positive based on everyone's shared experiences here. I've been checking my account constantly (glad to know we're all doing that!), and I'm definitely going to set up those text alerts that several people mentioned. The financial stress while waiting is so real - I've got student loan payments due next week and I'm trying to make my last paycheck stretch. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and experiences - this community is amazing for navigating PA's complicated system!

And hearing from people like @StardustSeeker and @Dylan Wright who got paid before their review was complete is giving me so much hope. The student loan payment deadline stress is so real - I m'dealing with my own upcoming bills and trying to stretch every dollar.
