PA UC question: Do I need to report starting a new job or just stop filing weekly claims?
Got a job offer yesterday (finally!) after being on unemployment for 3 months. Start date is Monday. I'm not sure what the protocol is when you find employment in PA. Do I need to call the unemployment office and tell them I found a job? Should I contact CareerLink since they helped with my resume? Or do I just stop filing my weekly certifications? Or should I file one more time and indicate that I worked? Don't want to mess anything up and end up with an overpayment issue down the road. Thanks for any help!

Congrats on the new job! Here's what you need to do: 1. File your weekly certification for your last week of unemployment 2. When you certify, answer honestly that you've found work and report your start date 3. Report any earnings if you worked any days that week 4. After that final certification, you can stop filing No need to call UC or CareerLink specifically to report your new job. The system handles it through that final certification. Just make sure you complete that last filing so your claim closes properly!

DO NOT just stop filing!!! When I got a job last year, I thought I could just stop filing and ended up with a HUGE MESS. Got letters about failure to report employment and had to deal with potential fraud investigation. Always file that final claim and report your new job!!!! The system needs to properly close your claim.

•Oh wow, thank you for the warning! I definitely don't want to deal with fraud accusations. I'll make sure to file that final certification.

Does anyone know if I need to tell them about my new salary? I'm worried because my new job pays less than my previous one, so if I lose this job in the future would my benefits be recalculated based on this lower salary? Should I include this concern when filing my final weekly claim?

•Your benefit rate is established when you first open your claim and doesn't change during that benefit year. If you would need to reapply in the future after this new job, then yes, your new wages would be used to calculate a new benefit rate. But for now, you just need to report that you found work - no need to include salary details in your final certification.

I was in this exact same situation back in January! I spent HOURS trying to get through to UC on the phone to ask this question and kept getting disconnected or hearing that "all representatives are busy." Eventually I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a PA UC rep in about 20 minutes. The website is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The rep confirmed exactly what others are saying here - file one last time and indicate you found work. But also make sure you report any earnings if you worked any days during that final claim week. Good luck with the new job!

•Does this Claimyr thing actually work? I've been trying to get through to UC for 2 weeks about my open issue.

•It worked for me! Saved me hours of redial hell. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days.

One thing nobody's mentioned - if you're starting mid-week, remember that PA UC weeks run Sunday-Saturday. So if you start on a Wednesday, you'd report partial unemployment and your earnings for that week. You can actually keep claiming partial benefits if your new job pays significantly less than your weekly benefit rate, but most people don't bother with the hassle once they're fully employed.

•Yep! This is important! When I started my new job on a Thursday, I reported the 2 days I worked and still got partial benefits for the other days that week. Every little bit helps when you're getting back on your feet financially!

I heard you have to contact CareerLink if they helped you get the job through their services but not if you found it on your own. Is that true?

GalaxyGuardian
•No, that's not accurate. If CareerLink directly referred you to the employer who hired you, they likely already know. But either way, there's no UC requirement to notify CareerLink when you find employment. The only thing required is filing that final weekly certification and indicating you found work.

My cousin just stopped filing when he got a job and nothing bad happened to him so maybe it depends?

•Your cousin got lucky. The official PA UC guidance is clear that you should file a final certification reporting that you found work. Some people who just stop filing without reporting employment can face complications later, including potential overpayment notices if the system doesn't properly close their claim. Always better to follow the proper procedure.

Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice! I'll definitely file my final certification this Sunday and report my new job and start date. Really glad I asked instead of just stopping my claims - sounds like that could have created problems. This community has been such a huge help during my unemployment journey!

Congratulations on landing the new job! Just wanted to add one more tip - when you file that final certification, make sure you have your exact start date ready. The system will ask for it specifically. Also, if your employer gave you any paperwork about your start date or wage info, keep that handy in case you need to reference it later. PA UC sometimes does follow-up verification checks, so having your documentation organized can save you headaches down the road. Best of luck with the new position!

•That's a great point about keeping documentation handy! I didn't think about potential follow-up verification checks. Better to be prepared than scrambling later if they ask for proof. Thanks for the extra tip!

Another thing worth mentioning - if you're worried about doing it wrong, you can always call the PA UC customer service line to confirm the process, though as others mentioned it can be tough to get through. But the consensus here is solid: file that final weekly certification, report your new job and start date, and you'll be all set. The system is designed to handle this transition smoothly when you follow the proper steps. Congrats again on the new job - it's always such a relief when the job search finally pays off!

•Thanks Aurora! You're absolutely right about calling if there are any doubts, even though getting through can be a challenge. It really is such a relief when the job search finally works out - those 3 months felt endless! I feel much more confident now about the process thanks to everyone's advice here. This community has been amazing throughout this whole experience.

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this exact process last month! Everyone's advice here is spot on - definitely file that final weekly certification and report your new job. One small detail I'll add: when you're filling out that final certification online, there's a specific question that asks "Did you start work or return to work?" - make sure to answer YES to that and then it will prompt you for your start date. The system is pretty straightforward once you know what to expect. Also, don't stress too much about getting it perfect - as long as you're honest about finding work and provide the start date, PA UC will handle closing your claim properly. Congratulations on the new job and best wishes for your fresh start!

•This is such helpful detail about the actual question wording in the system! I was wondering what exactly I'd see when filing that final certification. Knowing there's a specific "Did you start work or return to work?" question makes me feel much more prepared. Thanks for walking through the actual steps - it's reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this process recently. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to help out a newcomer to unemployment (hopefully soon to be former unemployment!

Congratulations on the job offer! Just to echo what everyone else has said - definitely file that final weekly certification and report your new employment. I went through this same process about 6 months ago and was nervous about messing something up too. The key things to remember: be honest about your start date, report any earnings from that final week if you work any days, and don't just stop filing without properly closing your claim. The PA UC system actually makes it pretty easy once you know the right steps. One thing that helped me was logging into the system a day or two before my usual filing day to familiarize myself with where the employment questions appear in the certification process. That way I wasn't rushing through it on Sunday. Wishing you all the best with your new position!

•Thank you for the great advice about logging in early to familiarize myself with the system! That's such a smart tip - I definitely don't want to be fumbling around on Sunday morning when I'm trying to file. I'll plan to take a look at the questions ahead of time so I know exactly what to expect. It's really comforting to hear from so many people who have successfully gone through this process. The anxiety about potentially messing up my claim was keeping me up at night, but now I feel confident about the steps I need to take. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience!

Congratulations on the new job! I just went through this exact same situation a few weeks ago and can confirm what everyone else is saying here. Definitely file that final weekly certification this Sunday and make sure to answer "yes" when it asks if you started work or returned to work. The system will then ask for your start date - just enter Monday's date. Since you're starting on a Monday, you won't have any earnings to report for that particular claim week (which runs Sunday-Saturday), so that part will be straightforward. One thing I wish someone had told me - after you submit that final certification, you'll get a confirmation that your claim has been closed. Keep a screenshot of that for your records! It gave me peace of mind knowing everything was properly documented. The whole process took me less than 5 minutes online once I knew what to expect. Don't stress about it - you're following all the right steps and this community has given you excellent guidance. Best of luck with the new position!

•This is incredibly helpful! Thank you for mentioning the confirmation screenshot - I wouldn't have thought to save that but it's such a smart idea for record keeping. I'm feeling so much more confident about this whole process now. It's amazing how a 5-minute task was causing me so much stress just because I didn't know the exact steps! I really appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to walk me through this. Can't wait to start fresh on Monday and officially close this chapter. This community has been a lifesaver during these past few months!

Congratulations on the new job! I went through this same situation about a year ago and was just as confused about the proper procedure. Everyone here has given you excellent advice - definitely file that final weekly certification this Sunday and report your new job with the start date. One small tip that helped me: when you're filling out that final certification, take your time with it even though it's exciting to be done with unemployment. Make sure you double-check that you've answered the employment questions correctly before submitting. I was so eager to finish that I almost clicked through too quickly! Also, don't be surprised if you feel a little emotional hitting "submit" on that final claim - it's such a milestone moment after months of uncertainty. You've got this, and congratulations again on landing the position! Wishing you all the best in your new role.

•Thank you so much for this thoughtful advice! You're absolutely right about taking my time with that final certification - I can already feel myself wanting to rush through it just because I'm so excited to be done with this whole process. I'll definitely slow down and double-check everything before submitting. And honestly, I'm already getting a bit emotional just thinking about filing that last claim! It really will be such a milestone moment after these long 3 months of uncertainty. I'm so grateful for all the support and guidance from this community - it's made such a difficult time more manageable knowing there are people here who understand exactly what this journey is like. Thank you for the encouragement and well wishes!

Congratulations on the job offer! This is such great news after 3 months of searching. Everyone here has already given you excellent advice about filing that final weekly certification and reporting your new job - that's definitely the right approach. I went through this exact same process last fall and was just as nervous about doing something wrong. The good news is that PA UC makes it pretty straightforward once you know what to expect. Since you're starting Monday, you'll file this Sunday for the week ending Saturday (so no earnings to report since you haven't started yet), and just make sure to answer "yes" when it asks about starting work and enter your Monday start date. One thing that really helped ease my anxiety was remembering that being honest and transparent with the system is always the best policy. You're doing everything right by asking questions and following the proper procedure instead of just stopping your claims. That final certification is important for properly closing your claim and avoiding any future complications. Best of luck with your new position - you've got this! It feels so good to finally have that weight lifted off your shoulders after months of job searching. Congratulations again!

•Thank you so much Lily! Your words really mean a lot, especially coming from someone who went through this exact same situation. You're absolutely right about being honest and transparent with the system - that's exactly what I plan to do. It's such a relief to know that I'm on the right track by asking questions instead of just winging it. The job search really has been exhausting these past 3 months, and I can't wait to finally close this chapter properly and start fresh. I'm feeling so much more confident now thanks to all the guidance from this amazing community. Here's to new beginnings!

Huge congrats on landing the job! 🎉 Just went through this exact same process myself a couple months ago. Everyone's advice here is spot on - definitely file that final weekly certification this Sunday and make sure to report your new job with Monday as your start date. The process is actually really straightforward once you know what to expect. Since you're starting on a Monday, you won't have any earnings to report for that claim week, so it'll be pretty simple. Just answer honestly when it asks about starting work, enter your start date, and the system will handle closing your claim properly. I was just as nervous about messing something up, but you're doing all the right things by asking questions first instead of just guessing. That final certification is really important for avoiding any potential issues down the road. After 3 months of job searching, I know how amazing this must feel! Enjoy that new job and congrats again on getting back to work! 👏

I love how supportive this community is - everyone sharing their experiences has made me feel so much more confident about the whole process. You're absolutely right that asking questions first was the smart move instead of just guessing and potentially creating problems later. I'm actually getting excited now about filing that final certification on Sunday - it's going to feel like such a victory lap! Thanks for the encouragement and celebration. Can't wait to start this new chapter on Monday! 😊

Congratulations on the new job! That's fantastic news after 3 months of searching. You've gotten excellent advice from everyone here - definitely file that final weekly certification this Sunday and report your new job with the Monday start date. I just want to emphasize something that @Amina Toure mentioned earlier - DO NOT just stop filing without properly reporting your employment! I've seen too many people run into complications later because they thought they could just stop their claims. The system needs that final certification to properly close your claim and avoid any potential overpayment issues. Since you're starting on Monday, you'll be reporting that you found work but won't have any actual earnings to report for that claim week (which runs Sunday-Saturday). It should be a quick and straightforward process online. You're being smart by asking these questions upfront instead of guessing. That final certification is your insurance against future headaches. Best of luck with the new position - you've got this! 🎉

•Thank you so much Yara! I really appreciate you emphasizing that point about not just stopping the claims - that warning from @Amina Toure earlier really stuck with me too. It s'scary to think I could have accidentally created a fraud investigation or overpayment situation just by not knowing the proper procedure! I m'definitely going to file that final certification this Sunday and make sure everything is documented correctly. It s'such a relief to have this community s'guidance - I feel like I m'going into this with a solid plan now instead of just hoping I do it right. Thanks for the congratulations and encouragement! 🙏

Congratulations on the new job! This is such wonderful news after your 3-month search. Everyone here has given you absolutely perfect advice - definitely file that final weekly certification this Sunday and report your new job with Monday as your start date. I went through this exact same process about 8 months ago and had the same worries about messing something up. The key thing to remember is that PA UC actually makes this transition pretty smooth when you follow the right steps. Since you're starting Monday, you'll have no earnings to report for that claim week, so it should be straightforward - just answer "yes" when asked about starting work and enter your start date. One quick tip: when you log in Sunday to file, you might notice the system feels a bit different knowing it's your last time. Take a moment to appreciate how far you've come! After months of uncertainty, you're finally closing this chapter properly and starting fresh. You're doing everything right by asking questions first instead of guessing. That final certification is so important for avoiding any future complications. Wishing you all the best with your new position - you've absolutely got this! 🎉

This whole experience has been such a rollercoaster, but having this supportive community has made all the difference. I'm feeling so prepared now thanks to everyone's advice.
