PA UC income verification problems after missing 2021 tax filing - now stuck with error message

I'm in a real mess with my PA unemployment claim right now. The system is asking me to verify my income, but I apparently never filed my state taxes for 2021 (thought I did through TurboTax but just discovered it didn't go through). Now when I try to upload my income verification documents through the UC portal, I keep getting an error message saying "electronic submission unavailable for this claim type" and I'm completely stuck. Has anyone dealt with this before? Do I need to file those missing 2021 taxes first before I can proceed with my claim? The UC phone lines are impossible to get through and my bills are starting to pile up while this claim sits in limbo.

You're in a tricky situation but it can be resolved. The UC system is giving you that error because it needs to verify your base year wages, and without your 2021 tax filing, there's a mismatch in their records. First, you should definitely file those missing 2021 taxes ASAP. Second, you'll need to submit your income verification documents by mail or fax since the electronic submission isn't working. Mail them to the UC office with your claim number clearly written on every page. Include copies of your W-2s, pay stubs, or any proof of income from your base period.

Thanks for the quick response! So I need to file the missing taxes first? I'm worried about how long that will take to process. Will my UC claim be on hold until the state processes my late tax filing? I don't have weeks to wait...

omg i had this EXACT problem last yr!! the system is so stupid sometimes. you gotta call them and explane the situation. they can override the electronic thing

Did you actually manage to get through on the phone? I've been trying for days and just get the busy signal or it hangs up after saying all agents are busy.

You don't necessarily need to wait for your 2021 taxes to fully process before continuing with your UC claim. What you need to do is: 1. Start the tax filing process for 2021 immediately 2. Print out a copy of your completed tax forms (even before submission) 3. Gather all W-2s, 1099s, and pay stubs from your base year 4. Write a brief explanation letter about your situation 5. Fax everything to your UC service center with your claim number on each page Then call your UC service center first thing Monday morning at 8:00 AM exactly to explain the situation. That's your best chance of getting through. They may be able to manually override the system while your tax situation gets sorted out.

This is really helpful, thank you. I'll start getting all those documents together right away. I've tried calling at 8am before but still couldn't get through. Is there any special number or trick to actually reaching a human?

I had something similar happen (different year though) and found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to a PA UC agent in about 20 minutes after spending days trying to call myself. Saved me weeks of stress. They basically keep calling for you until they get through, then connect you. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. It was worth it for me since I needed to explain my situation to a real person.

I've never heard of this service before. How does it work exactly? Did they actually get you through to someone who could help with complicated issues?

Yes, they connected me directly to a UC agent who could access my claim details and help with my specific issue. The service basically uses an automated system to keep calling the UC number until they get through (which is the hardest part), then they call you and connect you with the agent. Once I was talking to the agent, I was able to explain my unusual tax situation and they helped me figure out what documents I needed to send in.

That sounds like exactly what I need right now. I'll check out that website. Thanks!

Just wanna say the whole PA tax system is a JOKE!!!! I filed everything perfectly on time and they STILL messed up my account last year. Had to wait 4 MONTHS to get my refund. Now I'm on unemployment and dealing with the same incompetence. good luck to u!!!!

Sometimes it feels like they make it confusing on purpose so people just give up... smh

Just as a follow-up - make sure when you fax those documents that you include a cover sheet with your name, claim number, and a brief explanation. Also, keep trying the phone number even while you're waiting for the faxed documents to be processed. Sometimes you can get through at random times like 10:30am or 2:45pm when most people have given up for the day.

Thanks for these extra tips! I've started filing my 2021 taxes today and gathered my W-2s. Will try those odd calling times too while I wait.

i had a problem with income verification too but mine was because i worked in NJ for part of my base year and PA couldn't access those wages. did you work in another state in 2021? that might be causing extra problems with your claim.

No, I worked in PA the whole time. It's purely a matter of me somehow missing filing the PA state tax return. I filed federal but somehow messed up and didn't complete the state filing process. Such a headache.

I'd recommend also bringing physical copies of all your documentation to your local PA CareerLink office. While they're not directly part of the UC office, they sometimes have UC staff on certain days who can help scan and submit documents directly into your file. Call your nearest CareerLink first to see if they have UC staff available and on what days.

That's a great suggestion! There's a CareerLink about 25 minutes from me. I'll give them a call tomorrow to see if they have UC staff. Thanks for thinking outside the box!

I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned above, and it actually worked! Got through to a UC rep who explained I need to submit both my 2021 tax forms (even though they're late) along with all my pay stubs from the base year. They're putting a note on my account and gave me a specific fax number to send everything to. What a relief to finally talk to someone!

Great news! Make sure to follow up in about 5-7 business days if you don't see any updates to your claim status online. Sometimes documents can get lost in the shuffle and a polite follow-up call can help keep things moving.

Will do! The rep I spoke with said once I fax everything, my claim should be updated within 7-10 days. I'm just relieved to have a clear path forward now. Thanks everyone for your help!
