PA UC hearing suddenly canceled - told I never got 'telephone hearing rules' email - what's a continuance?

Just had the most frustrating experience with PA UC today. I had my appeal hearing scheduled for this morning that I've been waiting WEEKS for, and they straight up canceled it at the last minute! The referee said something about me not receiving an email with the 'telephone hearing rules' so they couldn't proceed. I never saw any email like that in my inbox or spam folder! Now they're talking about a 'continuance' which I'm guessing means rescheduling? Has anybody been through this before? I'm starting to wonder if this is just their way of dragging things out so they don't have to pay my benefits. I've been waiting almost 2 months already for this appeal hearing and now who knows how much longer. Do continuances usually take forever to reschedule or what? I'm completely broke at this point.

I had something similar happen last year. The continuance is just a reschedule, not them trying to deny you. They have to make sure you received the hearing instructions because they contain important info about your rights and how to submit evidence. Call the Appeals office tomorrow (not the regular UC number) and explain you never got the email. They should be able to resend it and reschedule your hearing pretty quickly - mine was only delayed about 10 days.

Thx for this, makes me feel a bit better. Do you remember if they just emailed you the new hearing date or did they send something in the mail too? I'm paranoid about missing another notice.

This happens fairly often with PA UC hearings. The system requires that you acknowledge receipt of the hearing instructions email by clicking a confirmation link. If you don't confirm receipt, the referee is required to issue a continuance (reschedule). Here's what you should do: 1. Call the UC Appeals office at 717-787-5122 first thing tomorrow morning 2. Explain you never received the hearing instructions email 3. Provide them with your current email address to verify it's correct in their system 4. Ask them to resend the instructions and confirm your hearing will be rescheduled The good news is that continuances due to procedural issues like this are typically rescheduled within 2-3 weeks. Make sure you check your email daily (including spam folders) after you call them.

This is really helpful, thank you! I definitely didnt see any email asking me to click a confirmation link, but I'll call that number tomorrow. Appreciate the clear instructions!

They always pull this kind of crap!!!! The whole system is designed to make us give up. I had THREE continuances before I finally got my hearing. Each time it was some different excuse. First they said they needed more documents, then they said the employer requested more time, then they said the referee was sick. Made me wait an extra 2 months total!!! It's all about delaying payments as long as possible.

While delays are frustrating, continuances are actually a normal part of the legal process and aren't designed to make people give up. They're meant to ensure both sides have proper notice and opportunity to present their case. The appeals office is handling thousands of cases with limited staff. I understand your frustration though - waiting for benefits when you need them is incredibly stressful.

I work with people going through UC appeals, and this email confirmation issue is actually pretty common. When the hearing notice gets sent, there's a separate email with hearing instructions that requires confirmation. If you don't confirm it, they have to reschedule by law. If you're struggling to reach someone at the appeals office (which can be nearly impossible some days), I recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They can get you connected to a PA UC representative usually within 30 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. They have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. I've had several clients use it successfully to resolve hearing issues quickly.

Thanks for the tip. I've literally spent hours on hold before so might check this out if I can't get through tomorrow. Have you heard if continuances usually get scheduled pretty quickly or do they put you at the back of the line?

Procedural continuances like yours typically get rescheduled within 2-3 weeks, not at the back of the line. Make sure to check your email daily after you call, including spam folders. Once you get the new hearing notice, you'll receive those instructions again that you'll need to confirm receipt of.

Wait I'm confused about something in this process - do they schedule these hearings automatically or did you have to request an appeal first? I got disqualified last week and I'm still trying to figure out what to do.

You need to file an appeal first. When you're disqualified, you should receive a determination letter that explains your appeal rights. You typically have 15 days from the date on that letter to file an appeal. You can file online through your PA UC dashboard or by mail. Only after you submit the appeal will they schedule a hearing.

Thanks! Just found the determination letter and filed the appeal online. Now I just wait for them to contact me I guess.

UPDATE: I called the appeals office this morning and got through after about 45 minutes on hold. They confirmed they sent the hearing instructions to an old email address I haven't used in years (no idea how they even had that one). They updated my contact info and are sending new instructions to my current email. The woman I spoke with said my hearing will be rescheduled for next week, so not as bad as I feared. Thanks everyone for the help and advice!

That's great news! Make sure to check your email (including spam folder) throughout the day. And when you get the instructions, read them carefully and click any confirmation links. Good luck with your hearing!
