PA UC emails unreadable on mobile - anyone else think they're designed to make us miss deadlines?

Just got another important email from PA Unemployment and trying to view it on my phone is IMPOSSIBLE! The formatting is completely messed up, text overlapping, and half the important stuff doesn't even show properly. I have to scroll sideways to see deadlines and amounts. I swear it feels like they purposely make these emails unreadable on mobile so we miss something important and get disqualified! Anyone else dealing with this? My benefit year expires in 3 weeks and I'm terrified I'll miss some crucial step because I can't properly read their notifications. It's like they're setting us up to fail on purpose.

You're not alone! Their mobile formatting is terrible. I had to start using my laptop to check ALL my UC emails after I missed a requirement last month. The system didn't notify me properly that I needed to verify my job search activities, and I almost lost benefits. If you can't access a computer, try requesting paper notifications instead - you can do this in your dashboard settings. When does your benefit year end exactly? You'll need to file a new application if you still need benefits.

Thanks for the tip about paper notifications! My benefit year ends Feb 15th. I'll try changing the settings right now. This is my first time on unemployment so everything's confusing enough without the email formatting issues.

same here!! their emails look like GARBAGE on my iphone!! missed a deadline last yr because of it and had to appeal

What happened with your appeal? I work for a legal aid organization, and we've seen several cases where people had successful appeals after missing deadlines due to notification issues. PA UC should really fix their system compatibility.

I think they do it on purpose too. Making the system hard to use so people give up and don't collect benefits they're entitled to. The whole unemployment system is designed to be frustrating.

I don't think it's intentional, just outdated technology. Their system was built before smartphones were common and they haven't updated it properly. When I needed to reach them about similar issues, I gave up calling after trying for DAYS. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a live agent who helped fix my notification settings. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. The agent told me they're aware of the mobile formatting problems but don't have funding to fix it yet.

Pro tip for dealing with this: Take screenshots of EVERYTHING. When I had issues reading emails on my phone, I would screenshot them, then use a photo editor app to zoom in on different parts. Not ideal but saved me when I had to prove I never received clear instructions about my open issue. Also, don't just rely on emails - log into your dashboard on a desktop browser (borrow a computer at the library if needed) at least once a week. The dashboard often has notices that never get emailed out. And set calendar reminders for all your deadlines so you don't miss anything important.

The screenshot idea is smart! I've been trying to forward the emails to myself hoping they'd format better but that doesn't work. I'll definitely start using the library computers too. So annoying that we have to jump through all these hoops just to read basic information about our benefits.

i think its cuz they use some weird old email system that doesnt work with modern phones lol. try downloading the outlook app, sometimes PA emails look better there then in gmail or the regular phone mail app

I work in IT and the problem is they're using HTML tables for layout which breaks on mobile. Its not malicious, just incompetence and outdated technology. Mobile optimization wasn't a priority when they built the system in like 2005 lol

When my benefit year ended I missed a notification because of this exact problem!!! Had to reapply and lost 3 weeks of payments because I didn't know I needed to start a new claim. Their whole system is rigged against us.

For anyone reading this thread who has a benefit year ending soon: You MUST file a new application when your benefit year ends, even if you still have a balance. It's not automatic. This is one of the most common mistakes people make with PA UC. Put a reminder in your calendar 1-2 weeks before your benefit year end date.

This is actually a potential due process issue. Benefits notices need to be reasonably accessible to claimants. If you lost benefits specifically because you couldn't read emails properly on mobile devices (which many low-income people rely on exclusively for internet access), you might have grounds for appeal. In the meantime, here are some workarounds: 1. Request paper notifications through your dashboard settings 2. Call the UC service center to confirm any important deadlines 3. Access your account through a desktop browser at a public library 4. Have all communications sent to an alternate email address that you check on a computer Document every instance where information was unreadable on your device. Take screenshots as evidence in case you need to appeal later.

Thank you for the detailed advice! I didn't realize this could be grounds for appeal. I'll definitely start documenting everything. And I'll try switching to paper notifications until they fix their system.
