PA UC eligibility if terminated but employer didn't contest claim - how soon will I get paid?

So excited to update y'all! My state rep finally got involved with my UC claim and I received my determination letter TODAY after being stuck in limbo for weeks! It says I'm eligible, but now I'm wondering how long until the actual money hits my account? Also, something I've been nervous about - I was terminated from my job (cost-cutting, they said), but my employer didn't fight my unemployment claim. Does that automatically mean I qualify? The determination letter says I'm eligible but I'm still anxious they might change their mind. This is my first time on unemployment and everything is confusing! Thanks in advance for any help!

Congrats on getting your determination! When an employer doesn't contest a claim, it definitely works in your favor, but your eligibility is ultimately based on the reason for termination. If you were laid off due to cost-cutting (no misconduct on your part), then yes, you're eligible - that's why you got an approval letter. As for payment timing, if you've been filing your weekly claims consistently, you should see your first payment within 2-3 business days on your PA ReliaCard (or direct deposit if you set that up). Make sure you keep filing your weekly certifications on time!

Thank you for the clear explanation! I've been filing my weeklies religiously every Sunday morning. I did set up direct deposit, so fingers crossed it comes through quickly. Bills are stacking up fast since they let me go.

omg congrats!! im still waiting on mine its been like 4 weeks with no determination 😭 did ur state rep actually call u back? i left 3 msgs with mine and nothing

Yes, my rep's office was surprisingly responsive! I walked into their local office in person after leaving 2 voicemails got me nowhere. The in-person visit made all the difference - they took my info and called PA UC directly. Maybe try going in person if you can?

Just because they approved you doesn't mean you're home free yet. My employer didn't contest my claim either, but then 6 MONTHS LATER they suddenly decided to appeal!!! PA UC then froze my payments and said I had to pay back $8,700!!!! I fought it and eventually won but just warning you that the system is COMPLETELY BROKEN. Document EVERYTHING and save all paperwork!!

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare! Thanks for the warning - I'll definitely keep all my paperwork. Did you have to get a lawyer to fight the overpayment?

0 coins

No lawyer but I had to go to TWO hearings and wait 3 months for a decision while my bills piled up! Keep EVERY email and document from your employer showing the layoff was not your fault. If they say "cost cutting" make sure you have that in writing!!!

the money usually showed up 2 days after i filed my weekly claim. so if you filed sunday you might see it tuesday or wednesday. congrats on getting approved!

That's super helpful to know, thank you! I'll keep an eye on my bank account tomorrow and Wednesday.

To directly answer your question: Yes, you're eligible if you were terminated for reasons other than willful misconduct. "Cost-cutting" falls under lack of work which is a qualifying reason. Once your claim is approved and you've completed your weekly certifications, payment typically posts within 2-4 business days after certification. First payments can sometimes take slightly longer. A few things to note: 1. Make sure you're completing your work search activities (applying to jobs, attending workshops, etc) - you need at least 2 per week 2. If you have any income at all, even part-time, you must report it during your weekly certification 3. Keep documenting your work search efforts - PA randomly audits these Glad your representative helped resolve this!

Thank you for the detailed info! I've been keeping a spreadsheet of all my job applications with dates and contact info, so hopefully I'm covered for the work search requirement. Really appreciate the clear explanation.

I had the WORST time trying to reach anyone at UC when I had questions about my payment timing. Kept getting busy signals for days, then when I finally got through, waited 3+ hours only to get disconnected! Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Totally worth it to actually speak to a real person at PA UC.

Thanks for the tip! If my payment doesn't show up by the end of the week I might try that. The UC phone system is definitely a nightmare.

is that service legit? seems sketchy to me that you have to pay to talk to unemployment when its a government service we already pay for with our taxes???

just be glad you got approved my dude. i got denied even tho i was laid off just because i accidentally put the wrong last day of work (was off by 2 days) and now i gotta go through the whole appeal process which takes like 2 months they said. the pa uc system is trash

omg thats so unfair!! they denied u for a 2 day mistake?? did u try calling to explain??

yeah i called like 30 times but it was always busy signal then when i finally got thru the lady said i had to do formal appeal, nothing she could do over phone

I used to work at PA UC (not anymore thank goodness). Here's what people don't understand - being approved and getting your determination letter is only step one. You need to make absolutely sure you're doing these things: 1. File your weekly claims WITHOUT FAIL (if you miss even one week it can mess everything up) 2. Do your work search activities - at least 2 per week, and keep record of EVERYTHING 3. If they ask for any additional info, respond IMMEDIATELY As for payment timing, with direct deposit it's usually 2-3 business days after you file your weekly certification. First payment might take a day or two longer as they set up your payment method in the system. And yes, if your employer didn't contest and you were let go for cost-cutting reasons, you should be eligible. Just don't give them any reason to reverse their decision!

Thank you for the insider perspective! That's really helpful. I've been super diligent about my weekly claims and job search activities. I was doing 5+ applications per week even though I only need 2, just to be safe.

Quick update question for you - did you get your payment yet? I'm curious because processing times seem to vary a lot these days.

Yes! Payment hit my account this morning - so it took exactly 3 business days from when I filed my weekly certification. Such a relief to finally have some income coming in while I job hunt!

That's awesome news that your payment came through so quickly! Three business days is pretty standard timing. Just wanted to add for anyone else reading this - make sure you keep filing those weekly certifications even after you start getting payments. I made the mistake of thinking I could skip a week when I was sick and it caused a whole mess with my claim that took weeks to sort out. The system is automated and doesn't care about your personal circumstances, so consistency is key. Keep up the good work with your job search and congrats again on getting through the initial hurdle!

Thanks for that reminder about the weekly certifications! I definitely learned that lesson the hard way when I was dealing with my claim earlier this year. Missed one week thinking it wouldn't matter since I was interviewing that week, and it created a whole nightmare of phone calls and paperwork to get it straightened out. The system really is unforgiving when it comes to those deadlines. Great advice for anyone new to the process!
