PA UC benefit year ending with 27 weeks - file weekly claim or start new claim?

So confused right now! My UC dashboard says I'm at week 27 and shows I'm 'eligible to file a new claim' but I STILL have money left in my balance (about 3 more weeks worth of payments). I'm not sure if I should just file my regular weekly claim like normal OR if I need to start this whole new claim process. If I file a new claim, will I lose the remaining balance? And will there be a gap in payments? Really need the money to pay rent next week so I don't want to mess this up!

This is what's called hitting your benefit year end. Even though you have $ left, PA UC requires you to file a new claim after 52 weeks from your initial application date. You should file the new claim RIGHT AWAY because there's often a 1-2 week delay while they process it. You won't lose your remaining balance but there might be a payment gap during processing.

Thanks for explaining! So should I also file my weekly claim for this week or JUST file the new application? I'm worried about doing both and somehow messing it up.

Omg 3 weeks with no money??? I can't wait that long! Is there anything you did to speed it up? Did you have to call them?

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO TRICK YOU!! They want you to mess up the benefit year transition so they can deny you. This happens to EVERYONE and they never explain it properly. They just LOVE making people reapply so they can find some tiny reason to disqualify you. Make sure you document EVERYTHING and take screenshots of your remaining balance!!

While the system can be frustrating, benefit year transitions are actually a federal requirement, not a PA trick. The state needs to verify you still qualify under current conditions. But definitely document everything just to be safe.

Let me clarify what's happening here. You've reached what's called a "benefit year ending" (BYE) date. This is exactly 52 weeks from when you first applied. By federal law, all states require you to requalify at this point. Here's what to do: 1. File the new application first 2. After completing the new application, then attempt your weekly certification 3. If the system won't let you certify weekly yet, wait until the new claim is processed Your remaining balance from the old claim can potentially transfer to the new claim if you're eligible, but this depends on your specific work history since filing the original claim.

This makes so much more sense now! Filing the new application tonight. Really hope I don't have a long gap in payments though.

I had this exact situation back in February. Filed new claim right away and tried calling to ask if I should still file weekly. Spent FIVE DAYS hitting redial and couldn't get through to anyone. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a PA UC agent in about 20 minutes. Agent confirmed I needed to file new claim first, then weekly after. They also expedited my new claim processing. Check out their demo video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2

100% legit. They just help you skip the phone queue. Agent I talked to was an actual PA UC employee who had full access to my claim info and fixed everything.

I went through this in January. Whatever you do, KEEP FILING YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS even while waiting for the new claim to process!!! If your new claim gets approved, they'll pay you retroactively for those weeks. But if you don't file weekly during the transition, you'll never get that money! I learned this the hard way and lost 2 weeks of payments I could have received.

This is really helpful advice - thank you! I'll definitely keep filing weekly no matter what.

UPDATE: I filed my new claim last night and was able to speak with someone at UC this morning using that Claimyr service (it actually worked!). The agent confirmed I should file my weekly claim too. She said my new claim should be processed within 7-10 days and payments might only be delayed by 1-2 weeks max. She also noted this in my account to help speed things up. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Great news! Make sure to keep filing weekly claims during this transition period as mentioned above. Also, you might need to complete ID.me verification again for the new claim, so watch for emails about that.

So glad you got through! Keep us updated on how long it actually takes to get paid!
