PA UC appeal timeline - stuck in limbo with no updates for weeks

I'm completely lost in the PA UC appeal process and don't know what to do next. Filed my appeal after being denied benefits 6 weeks ago (they said I voluntarily quit but I was actually laid off when the restaurant closed). Already had the referee hearing 3 weeks ago where I presented my termination letter and final paycheck stub, but the status still shows 'appeal pending' when I check online. No one answers when I call the appeal office. How long does this process usually take? Is there any way to check what's happening with my case? Starting to panic because rent is due next week and I was counting on that backpay.

Appeals are taking forever right now, but 3 weeks after the hearing is actually getting into concerning territory. Did you create an account on the PA UC appeals portal? That's different from the regular unemployment dashboard. Sometimes more details show up there. Also, did you receive any confirmation email after your hearing?

Wait, there's a separate appeals portal?? I've just been checking my regular UC account. No confirmation email after the hearing - the referee just said they'd 'be in touch' and that was it. Ugh, this is so frustrating!

The current timeline for appeal decisions is approximately 4-6 weeks after the hearing, so you're still within the normal timeframe. PA UC is struggling with a backlog. The most important thing is that you continue filing your weekly claims during this waiting period! If you win your appeal, you can only get paid for weeks you properly claimed. To check on your appeal status, you need to: 1. Call the UC Service Center at 888-313-7284 2. When prompted, select the option for appeals 3. Have your appeal confirmation number ready (it should be on your hearing notice) And yes, there is a separate appeals system. Log in at https://www.uc.pa.gov/appeals

Thanks for the info! I have been filing my weekly claims, so that's good at least. I don't have an appeal confirmation number though - just my regular UC claim number. Will that work? I'll try calling tomorrow morning.

i went through this last yr and it took them 5 weeks after my hearing to update anything. then one day the money just showed up on my card with no warning. keep filing every week!

That's actually reassuring to hear. Did they backpay you for all the weeks you were waiting?

The PA UC system is DELIBERATELY making this process as DIFFICULT as possible! They're hoping you'll just give up. I waited EIGHT WEEKS after my hearing before getting a decision letter. And guess what? They ruled against me even though I had all the evidence! Had to file a SECOND appeal to the board. The whole system is rigged against workers!!!

Oh no, that's horrible! I really hope I don't have to go through a second appeal. Did you eventually win your case?

Eventually yes, but it took another 3 months and I had to get legal aid involved. Don't let them intimidate you!

Has anyone tried using Claimyr to reach someone about appeals? I was stuck in appeal limbo for weeks but used their service to actually get through to a human at PA UC. They connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. The agent was able to tell me my appeal was actually approved but just hadn't been processed in the system yet. Saved me weeks of stress. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 or just go to claimyr.com

I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

It worked for me - they basically just keep calling the UC number for you until they get through. Then they call you and connect you to the agent. Took about 18 minutes when I used it. Worth it to finally get answers.

I think your getting worried to early. Only 3 weeks since hearing is normal. My nieghbor works for unemployment office (not in appeals but still) and she says theyre running 4-6 weeks behind on everything right now. As long as you keep filing weekly claims youll get all your money when they finally approve it. Just hang in there!

Thanks for the perspective. I guess I'm just anxious because I really need the money. Will keep filing and try to be patient.

did you try contacting your state representative? thats what i did when my claim was stuck for 2 months. their office has special contacts at uc and got my issue fixed in 3 days.

I hadn't thought of that! Do I just call my local state rep's office? What did you say when you contacted them?

yep just google your address + PA state representative to find yours. call their office and say you need help with unemployment. they'll email you a form to fill out that gives them permission to inquire about your case. they have special direct contacts at UC that regular people don't have access to.

Just checking back - have you had any updates? If you still haven't heard anything, I'd recommend taking two actions: 1. Try the state rep approach mentioned above - it really does work 2. Call the Appeals office directly at 717-787-5122 (not the regular UC number) first thing in the morning (7:30am) when they're less busy And remember that referee decisions are typically mailed, not shown immediately in the system. So there's a chance a decision has been made but the letter is still on its way to you.

You're amazing, thank you! I'll try calling that direct appeals number tomorrow morning. I'll also reach out to my state rep today. Will update when I know more!

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at the Appeals office! Turns out my appeal was actually approved 2 weeks ago but there was a system issue that prevented it from being processed. They're fixing it now and said I should see my payments within 3-5 business days. Thank you all for your help and advice!

That's great news! Did they say if they're paying you interest for the delay? (Just kidding, we all know they don't.) Glad it worked out!
