Holiday bonus causing PA UC claim issue - will this delay my seasonal unemployment pay?

Just re-applied for my seasonal unemployment benefits like I do every winter (I'm laid off Nov-March in construction) and now I'm seeing 'open issue' on my claim status. Never had this problem before! Looks like they're flagging the holiday bonus I got in December from my company. It's just our normal Christmas bonus that I've received for years and it's never affected my benefits before. My benefit year started Jan 1, 2025, and I'm worried this will hold up all my weekly payments. Anyone else had UC payments held up because of a holiday bonus? How long did it take to resolve? Bills are coming due soon and I'm getting anxious about this delay.

happened to me last year but w/ severance pay not bonus. open issue took 3 weeks to clear up on its own. super annoying!!

3 weeks?? That's way too long to wait with no income coming in. Did you have to call them or did it just magically fix itself?

They might be treating your bonus as earnings that need to be reported. When I had something similar, I had to verify the exact date the bonus was paid and how much. The holiday bonus should only affect the week it was paid in, not your entire claim. Check if you can upload proof showing when the bonus was paid through your dashboard.

This is correct! PA UC definitely needs to know WHEN you got the bonus. If it was in December before your benefit year started on Jan 1, it shouldn't affect your current claim AT ALL. But if the payment hit your bank in January, then yeah, they'll deduct it from your weekly benefit for that week only. I've been doing seasonal unemployment for 7 years (roofing) and ran into this exact issue once when my Christmas bonus came late.

You NEED to call them asap! Open issues don't resolve themselves and your payments will be on hold until someone reviews it. I was in a similar situation with a retirement payout that caused an issue on my claim. Take screenshots of your paystubs showing the date of the bonus payment in December before your new benefit year started. You'll need to explain that to an agent. The problem is getting through to an actual person at PA UC. I spent 2 weeks trying to get through - busy signals, getting disconnected, or being told to call back later. Super frustrating!

Try using Claimyr to get through to PA UC - it actually works! I was skeptical but after 3 days of constant busy signals, I tried it and got connected in about 20 minutes. They basically keep calling for you until they get through, then connect you. Saved me so much frustration. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 or just go to claimyr.com. Worth it to get this resolved quickly.

I help people with UC issues, and I can tell you that the most common reason for this is that the employer reported the bonus incorrectly on their quarterly wage report. When you call PA UC (and yes, calling is the only way to fix this quickly), ask the agent to check if your employer reported the bonus as part of your January wages instead of December. This happens ALL THE TIME with seasonal workers, especially in construction. The agent can manually verify when the bonus was paid if you can provide documentation. Holiday bonuses from before your benefit year don't count against your current claim. Once they fix it, your payments should process within 2-3 business days.

THIS IS SO ANNOYING!!! I've been dealing with PA unemployment for YEARS and they ALWAYS mess up seasonal work stuff!!! I swear they have no idea how construction jobs work at all. Every January it's the same thing - some kind of problem with the claim and then YOU have to fix THEIR mistakes. And good luck trying to call them!!! I spent 6 HOURS on redial last time I had an issue!!

Good news: After you get this fixed, your weekly claims should process normally. Bad news: It won't fix itself. My friend who works in seasonal fishing industry had an almost identical situation. His employer's HR person coded the holiday bonus as January wages instead of December. Took him calling and explaining to get it fixed, but once it was resolved, he got all his back payments at once. The agent manually recoded the bonus to the correct date. Just be ready to clearly explain that the bonus was received in December 2024, before your new benefit year started on Jan 1, 2025.

That's actually super helpful - thank you! I'll make sure to have my December pay stub ready to show the date clearly. At least it sounds like it's a common issue they should know how to fix.

Yes!! Finally got through yesterday after using that Claimyr service someone recommended above. You guys were right - it was exactly what several of you said. My employer reported the bonus in January instead of December. The agent was able to fix it on the spot and said my payments should start processing within 3 days. The whole call took less than 10 minutes once I actually got through to someone.
