My hearing was scheduled for 9am but didn't start till like 10:15 because they were behind. Then the actual hearing took about 45 minutes. But yeah I'd plan for the whole morning at least!!
Just wanted to add that you should also check if any of your former coworkers who were laid off with you are also dealing with appeals. If multiple people from the same layoff are being challenged, that actually strengthens everyone's case since it shows a pattern of the employer trying to avoid UC tax increases rather than legitimate misconduct issues. Also, keep detailed records of every communication you have with UC during this process - dates, times, who you spoke with, reference numbers. If anything goes wrong with your payments, you'll want that paper trail. The appeals process can be nerve-wracking but with your layoff documentation you're in much better shape than most people facing these challenges.
Based on what I've seen recently, the system is processing most standard claims (where there's no dispute about the reason for separation) within 2-3 weeks. The pandemic backlog is completely gone. However, there are still some common causes of delay: 1. Identity verification issues 2. Employer disputes about separation reason 3. Recent receipt of severance pay (needs to be properly reported) 4. Previous overpayments that haven't been resolved 5. Working part-time while claiming benefits If none of these apply to you, you should have a relatively smooth experience compared to 2021. And remember - if your claim shows 'Open Issue' status for more than 2 weeks, don't wait - call them to find out what's needed!
This is super helpful - thank you! I am getting a severance package as part of the layoff. Do I need to wait until after the severance period to apply, or do I just report it when I file? I definitely don't want to create any overpayment issues.
You should apply as soon as you're unemployed, but you need to report the severance. Pennsylvania treats lump-sum severance differently than weekly severance. If you're getting a lump sum, it may delay the start of your benefits but won't disqualify you. If it's weekly payments, you need to report it each week. When you file, there will be specific questions about severance - just answer honestly and the system will calculate your eligibility period correctly.
Filed for PA UC in November 2024 and got my first payment in exactly 3 weeks. Much better than the horror stories from 2021! A few things that really helped me: 1. I called the week after filing just to confirm everything looked good - caught a small issue with my employer's address that could have caused delays 2. Made sure to file my biweekly claims on the same day each time (Sundays work well) 3. Keep detailed records of your work search activities from day one - don't wait until they ask for proof The phone lines are still busy but not impossible like before. If you do need to call, try right when they open at 8am or around 4pm - had better luck those times. Good luck with your claim!
btw make sure ur doing ur work search activities every week even tho ur not getting paid yet! my friend forgot and when her claim finally went through they denied her first 4 weeks cuz she didnt do the job search stuff
I'm in a similar situation - filed my claim in early February and still waiting for determination after 6 weeks. The lack of transparency is killing me! I've been calling weekly and get different answers every time. One agent told me my employer hadn't responded yet, another said they were waiting on some internal review. It's like they're making it up as they go along. I haven't tried contacting my state rep yet because I was worried about exactly what happened to you - getting pushback from UC staff. But reading through these comments, it sounds like it might still be worth trying. The fact that they called you back (even rudely) shows your case is at least getting some attention now. Hang in there - I know how stressful it is when bills are piling up and you have no idea when relief is coming. At least we're both keeping up with our weekly certifications and work search requirements so we'll get backpay when this mess finally gets sorted out.
Glad to hear your payments came through! For future reference, these occasional delays are normal with the PA UC system. Their processing times can fluctuate based on claim volume, system maintenance, or even just random hiccups in their antiquated system. As long as your claim shows 'paid' status in the system, the money will eventually be deposited. The best practice is to allow 1-2 business days from the pay date before becoming concerned about missing payments.
This is exactly why I always keep a small emergency buffer when possible - PA UC's payment timing can be so unpredictable! I've learned to expect these random delays every few weeks. It's frustrating because when they say "pay date 2/6" you'd think that actually means something, but apparently it's more like a suggestion 😒 At least it sounds like everyone's payments are starting to come through now. The system really needs an overhaul.

FINAL UPDATE: My claim was finally processed! It took exactly 5 weeks from start to finish. For anyone facing the same interstate wage problem: 1) Call the interstate claims office directly, 2) Contact your former state's UC office to make sure they send the wage data, 3) Upload all your pay stubs and W-2s to your PA dashboard as backup, 4) Don't give up! Thanks everyone for your help and advice through this stressful process.

•Great news! Did you end up getting all your back weeks paid too?

•Yes! I got paid for all 5 back weeks at once, which was a huge relief. The money hit my Money Network card yesterday.

So glad to see your final update! I'm currently dealing with a similar situation with my Maryland wages not transferring to PA and this gives me hope. Question - when you called the interstate claims office, did you have to wait long to get through? I've been trying the main PA UC number for weeks with no luck. Also, did Delaware UC give you any pushback when you contacted them directly about expediting the wage transfer?
