Will I get my full ny unemployment amount when my benefit year ends?
My maximum benefit amount shows $17,820 and my benefit year ends in November 2023. If it ends in October, will I still receive the entire $17,820 like it shows? Also, I heard rumors that they might extend unemployment benefits because of economic conditions. Anyone know if there's any truth to that? Or if we might get some kind of additional payment when benefits end? Just trying to plan my finances here.

You only get what you claim each week until your benefit year ends. If you haven't claimed all the money by the end date, you lose whatever's left. They don't just give you a lump sum of unclaimed benefits.

ā¢Wait so if I haven't used all of my benefits by November I just lose them? That seems unfair...

ā¢Yep, thats exactly how it works. The system is designed to pay you weekly as needed, not guarantee the full amount.

ā¢this is 100% correct. your benefit year is basically just the window of time you can claim those benefits. once that window closes, so does your access to the money.

After weeks of not being able to reach anyone by phone, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual human at unemployment in like 30 mins. Talking to a real person got my benefits straightened out immediately - best decision I made during this whole unemployment nightmare! They have a YouTube video explaining how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

ā¢This sounds like an ad... does this actually work? I've been trying to get through for 3 weeks now

ā¢Not an ad lol. I was desperate after calling for days and getting nowhere. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when it reaches an agent. Saved me hours of holding my phone to my ear.

ā¢im skeptical of these 'miracle solutions'... what's the catch? š

Kyle Wallace
ā¢No catch, it's just a service that calls repeatedly so you don't have to. When they get through, they transfer the call to you. Talking to an agent solved my problem in 15 mins after weeks of frustration.

ā¢not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these things never work for me. the system is just broken beyond repair

ā¢I get the skepticism - I felt the same way. But when you've been trying for weeks and getting nowhere, you get desperate. It actually worked for me. The relief of finally talking to someone who could help was worth it.

They are NOT extending benefits. That was only during peak covid when there was federal funding. Those programs are all gone now. And no, there's no $2000 payment at the end either. Don't know where you heard that but it's not true.

The way NY unemployment works is you have a benefit year (52 weeks) and a maximum benefit amount. You can collect weekly payments up until either you hit the maximum amount OR your benefit year ends - whichever comes first. Once your benefit year ends, ANY unclaimed money is gone forever. You don't automatically get whatever is left.

ā¢Thanks for explaining! So I need to make sure I'm claiming every week I'm eligible to maximize what I get?
0 coins
Olivia Kay
ā¢Exactly. Just make sure you're filing every week you're eligible. The system doesn't automatically pay you - you have to request payment each week.

yooo i had this same question last year. so heres the deal: you only get paid for weeks you actually certify before your BYE (benefit year end) date. any money left over after that? POOF gone. it SUCKS bro š¤

ā¢Bruh its not that it sucks, thats literally how ALL unemployment works. They dont just hand you a check for the remaining balance š

Gianni Serpent
ā¢ya i mean i get that but it still feels bad when you see that money just sitting there and you can't touch it lol

Whoever told you there's going to be a $2,000 payment is lying to you. There's absolutely no legislation for that. Don't plan your finances around rumors.

I just went through this last month. Called NY unemployment about my remaining balance and they told me there's no way to get it after the BYE date. I had about $3,400 left that just vanished. The whole system is designed to make it hard to get what you're owed.

ā¢Did you try calling the appeals department? Sometimes they can help when the regular agents can't.

ā¢I tried everything. Even had my state rep call on my behalf. Once that benefit year is done, they won't budge. It's incredibly frustrating.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment benefits: ā¢ Your benefit year is 52 weeks from when you first applied ā¢ Your maximum benefit amount is the total you can receive during that year ā¢ You must certify EVERY WEEK you're eligible to receive payment ā¢ Once your benefit year ends, you lose access to any remaining funds ā¢ There are currently NO extension programs in effect ā¢ There is NO lump sum payment at the end If you're having trouble reaching someone, I highly recommend using Claimyr.com - it's a service that will wait on hold for you and connect you with an agent. I spent weeks trying to resolve an issue before finding them, and they got me through to a real person who fixed my claim immediately. Don't wait until the last minute hoping for extensions or special payments. The system is designed to pay out weekly during your eligible period only.

ā¢This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll check out that service since I really need to talk to someone about my specific situation.

ā¢I second the Claimyr recommendation. Used it last week after trying to get through for days. Finally talked to someone who fixed my issue in minutes.

I've worked in HR for 12 years and can confirm there are ZERO plans to extend unemployment or provide additional payments. Those were special federal programs during the height of the pandemic. Anyone telling you otherwise is spreading misinformation.

Everyone's right about not getting paid after your BYE date, but here's a pro tip: If you're still unemployed when your benefit year ends, you CAN file a new claim and potentially get a new benefit year with a new maximum amount. But it depends on if you worked at all during your previous benefit year.

Madison Tipne
ā¢That's good to know! I did some part-time work over the summer so maybe that would help with a new claim if needed.

ā¢Just make sure you reported that income when you certified those weeks! They'll check your earnings when you file a new claim.

Called NY unemployment yesterday because I was in the same situation. The agent said the dollar amount on your account is the MAXIMUM you can receive, not a guaranteed amount. You only get what you claim before your BYE date.

Tried calling unemployment for WEEKS with no luck. Finally used claimyr.com after someone here recommended it. Got through to a rep in under an hour who fixed my issue immediately. Worth every penny considering how many hours of my life I wasted trying to call them myself.

ā¢wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've been calling non-stop for days

ā¢Yeah it works. They basically call repeatedly using their system until they get through, then they connect you. Saved me literal days of frustration.
