Why is NYS Department of Labor unemployment office closed today - need to file weekly claim

I went to my local NYS Department of Labor office this morning to get help with my weekly claim certification and they're completely closed. No signs posted or anything explaining why. I tried calling the main unemployment line but it just says they're experiencing high call volume. Does anyone know what's going on? I'm supposed to certify by tomorrow and I can't figure out how to do it online because my account keeps giving me error messages.

Most NYS Department of Labor offices are closed on federal holidays and some state observances. What day did you go? Also, you should be able to file your weekly claim online through my.ny.gov - have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? That usually fixes the error messages people get when trying to certify.

It was yesterday (Monday) so not a holiday. I'll try clearing my cache, thanks for the tip!

The NYS Department of Labor offices sometimes close for staff training or emergency maintenance without much notice. For your weekly claim certification, you can definitely do it online or by phone. If the website isn't working, try calling the Tele-Cert line at 1-888-581-5812. You have until the end of the week to certify, so you're not in immediate danger of missing the deadline.

Wait, I thought you had to certify by Sunday night or you lose that week's benefits? I've been stressing about this exact thing.

No, you have until 7:30 PM on the Sunday following your claim week. So if your claim week ended on Saturday, you have until the next Sunday at 7:30 PM to certify. Don't panic if you miss a day or two during the week.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone, I had success using a service called Claimyr that gets you connected to actual agents without the endless hold times. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows exactly how it works. I was stuck in phone hell for weeks trying to resolve an adjudication issue until someone here recommended it.

That sounds too good to be true honestly. How much does something like that cost?

I was skeptical too but it actually worked. I'd rather not get into pricing here but it was worth it to finally talk to someone who could explain why my claim was pending.

The NYS Department of Labor system is such a MESS. They close offices randomly, the website crashes constantly, and good luck ever reaching a human on the phone. How are people supposed to survive when the system designed to help us is completely broken?

I feel you on this. Been trying to get through about my job search requirements for two weeks now.
