What happens after you certify weeks for unemployment with NYS Department of Labor?

I've been filing my weekly claims with NYS Department of Labor for about a month now and I'm still confused about what actually happens after I hit submit on my certification. Like does someone review it right away? How long until the money shows up? My claim status just says 'effective' but I never know if I did something wrong on my weekly filing. Anyone know the actual process that happens behind the scenes after we certify our weeks?

After you submit your weekly certification, NYS Department of Labor runs it through their automated system first to check for obvious issues - like if you reported working too many hours or earnings over the allowable limit. If everything looks normal, payments usually process within 2-3 business days. If there are any flags, it gets sent for manual review which can take longer.

That makes sense! So if I don't hear anything back that's probably good news? I was worried I was doing something wrong since nobody ever confirms anything.

The system checks your job search activities too if you're required to do them. Make sure you're logging those properly in the NYS Department of Labor job search system because that can hold up payments if they're missing or don't meet requirements.

Wait, there's a separate job search system? I thought I just had to answer yes/no on the weekly claim form about looking for work.

Yes, you need to log your actual job search activities in their online system. Check your my.ny.gov account - there should be a job search log section where you enter details about each application, interview, etc.

I had issues reaching NYS Department of Labor when my payments stopped coming after I certified. Turns out there was some verification issue they needed to discuss with me but I couldn't get through their phone system for weeks. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to call repeatedly.

How much does something like that cost? I'm barely getting by on unemployment as it is.

It was worth it for me since I was going weeks without payment and needed to resolve the issue. Way less stressful than hitting redial for hours every day.

THE WHOLE NYS DEPARTMENT OF LABOR SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been waiting 3 weeks for my payment after certifying and nobody can tell me why. The automated messages just say 'your claim is being processed' over and over. Meanwhile my rent is due and I can't even talk to a human being about it!

that really sucks, have you checked if theres any action items in your online account? sometimes they need documents or verification

Just want to add that after certification, if you're on standby status through your union, the process works a little differently. Your employer has to confirm your standby status each week too, so there's an extra step that can slow things down.
