Remote worker in Michigan laid off from New York job - where to file unemployment?
Lost my remote job based in New York but I live in Michigan. Everything I read says to file in the state where I worked (NY), but my paystubs only show Michigan tax deductions. Will this be an issue for filing? Really confused about which state to apply in.

You need to file in New York since thats where the employer is located. The tax thing doesnt matter - its about where the company is based. I went through this last year working remote from Jersey for a NY company.

can confirm 💯 ny unemployment doesnt care about state taxes, just where the company is registered

Hey I was in the same boat! Used claimyr.com to get through to an agent to confirm this. They stay on hold and call you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but worth it to get a clear answer. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% legit, saved me hours of hold time. Agent confirmed I could file from out of state no problem

$20 seems steep just to get someone on the phone 🤔

Def file in NY. I'm actually a unemployment specialist and the rule is simple: file where the employer paid into the unemployment insurance system, which is NY in your case.

Quick heads up - make sure you print out all your paystubs and w2s before filing. NY unemployment website is a clown show 🤡 and youll need backup of everything

Just went thru this process myself. Here's what you need to know: 1. File with NY unemployment 2. Have ALL your documents ready (w2, paystubs, termination letter) 3. You might need to call them to verify some stuff since ur out of state 4. Use claimyr.com if you cant get through on phone 5. Benefits will be based on NY wages even tho you paid MI taxes 6. Weekly certifications can be done online from anywhere DM me if u need more help, been there done that!
