NYS Department of Labor unemployment if I live in one state and work in another - which state do I file with?

I'm really confused about where to file my unemployment claim. I live in Connecticut but my job was in New York. I got laid off last month and I'm not sure if I should file with NYS Department of Labor or Connecticut's system. My employer was definitely a New York company and all my paychecks came from there. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? I don't want to mess this up and file in the wrong place.

You file where you worked, not where you live. Since your job was in New York, you need to file with NYS Department of Labor through their my.ny.gov system. Your wages were reported to New York state, so that's where your UI claim needs to go. Connecticut won't have your wage records.

Thank you! That makes sense. Do I need to do anything special since I live out of state or is the process the same?

Same exact process - NYS Department of Labor doesn't care where you live as long as you worked in New York. You'll file weekly claims online and do your job search just like anyone else. The only difference might be if you need to go to a workforce one office for something, you'd have to travel to NY.

Actually had this same situation when I lived in Jersey but worked in Manhattan. Filed everything through NYS Department of Labor without any issues.

That's more complicated. You'd probably file with the state where you worked most recently (CT in your case) but they might need to request wage records from NY. Best to call both states to figure out which has the higher benefit amount.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to confirm this, I used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual agent pretty quickly. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money since I got laid off.

It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly it was way better than spending days trying to get through on my own. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to sort these things out.

Been through this exact thing. File with NY since that's where your wages were earned. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file - dates, employer info, reason for separation, etc. The NYS Department of Labor system will walk you through it.

Just want to add that when you file with NYS Department of Labor, make sure you have your Social Security number and all your employment details from the NY job ready. The system is pretty straightforward once you get started. I was in a similar situation (lived in PA, worked in NY) and it was actually easier than I expected. The key thing is that your employer was paying into the NY unemployment system, so that's definitely where your claim needs to go. Don't overthink it - you've got this!

This is really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing! I was definitely overthinking it. Quick question - when you filed online with NYS Department of Labor, did you need to provide any additional documentation since you lived out of state, or was it just the standard stuff they ask everyone?
