NYS Department of Labor - how to apply for unemployment after relocating from Miami

I just moved to New York from Miami last month and lost my job. I worked in Florida for the past 2 years but now I'm a NY resident. Do I apply for unemployment through NYS Department of Labor or Florida? I'm really confused about which state handles my claim since I earned all my wages in Florida but live here now. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? I need to get my application in but don't want to mess it up by filing in the wrong place.

You'll need to file with Florida since that's where you earned your wages over the past 18 months. NYS Department of Labor can't pay benefits on wages you didn't earn in New York. Florida will handle your claim even though you moved. You can file online through Florida's system.

That makes sense, thank you! Do I need to update my address with Florida when I file or keep using my old Miami address?

Actually, you should update your address to your current NY address when filing. The state where you earned wages handles the claim, but they need your current contact information. Also make sure you're available for work in NY since that's where you'll be job searching.

Wait, but what if they want him to do job search activities in Florida? That doesn't make sense if he lives in NY now. This is so confusing!

No, job search requirements are based on where you currently live and are seeking work. Florida will accept NY job search activities since that's where the claimant resides.

I had trouble reaching Florida unemployment by phone when I needed help with my interstate claim. If you run into the same issue, there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process much easier than spending hours on hold.

Thanks, I'll check that out if I have trouble getting through to them!

Just make sure you have all your Florida W-2s and pay stubs ready before you start the application. They'll need your complete work history and wage information from your Miami job.
