Does New York have unemployment benefits - just moved here from out of state
I just relocated to New York from another state and lost my job during the move. My previous state's unemployment office told me I need to file in New York since that's where I'm living now. Does New York have unemployment benefits and how do I apply? I'm completely lost with the NYS Department of Labor system and don't know where to start. My savings are running out fast and I really need to get this figured out.

Yes, New York absolutely has unemployment benefits through the NYS Department of Labor. You'll need to file your initial claim online at my.ny.gov. Since you worked in another state, your claim will likely be processed as an interstate claim which can take a bit longer to set up. Make sure you have your previous employer information and Social Security number ready when you apply.

•Thank you! Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before applying or should I do it right away?

File immediately! There's a waiting week in NY but the sooner you apply the better. The NYS Department of Labor will need to verify your wages from your previous state which can add extra processing time. Don't wait - every day you delay is money you're potentially losing.

•I had the same problem trying to reach someone about my interstate claim. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents by phone. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration and I finally got my claim sorted out.

The NYS unemployment system is decent once you get it set up but the initial process for interstate claims can be REALLY slow. Expect delays and don't panic if your claim sits in adjudication for a few weeks while they verify everything with your previous state.

Just wanted to add that when you file your interstate claim, make sure you have all your wage information from your previous state employer handy - pay stubs, W-2s, etc. The NYS Department of Labor will need to request your wage records from the other state, and having your documentation ready can help speed things up if there are any discrepancies. Also, don't forget to certify for benefits weekly once your claim is approved, even if you're still waiting for the interstate verification to complete. Good luck with your claim!
