Need to fax docs to NY unemployment - anyone recommend a good app?
I just got a letter from NY unemployment saying I need to fax some additional documents to verify my identity by next week. I don't have a fax machine (who does anymore??). Is there a good app anyone has used successfully to fax stuff to the DOL? Don't want my claim to get held up because they didn't receive my documents.

•Thanks! Did you get any kind of confirmation that they received it? That's what I'm most worried about.

I've had success with both FaxZero and HelloFax when sending documents to NYSDOL. Make sure you include your claim ID and full name on a cover sheet. Also very important: keep the confirmation page showing the fax was successfully transmitted. I actually take a screenshot of it too just in case.

•Great tip about the screenshot! I wouldn't have thought of that. Will definitely do that as proof.

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes they say they never got the fax even when you have confirmation??? I sent mine THREE TIMES with confirmation and they still claimed they never got anything! I'm so paranoid now about sending anything to them!!

•This happens frequently. The NYSDOL fax system gets overwhelmed, especially at the beginning of each month. Your best bet is to fax early in the morning (before 8am) or late evening (after 7pm) when there's less traffic. Also, their system works better with black and white documents than color or grayscale.

I had a similar issue last month and wasted SO much time with the fax thing. After three failed attempts (all with "confirmation" that went nowhere), I finally got through to an actual agent who helped resolve it. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to someone instead of waiting on hold forever. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - basically they call and wait on hold for you, then call you when an agent picks up. The agent actually gave me a direct email address to send my documents instead of faxing! Saved me so much frustration.

•wait there's an EMAIL option??? why don't they just tell people that in the first place instead of making us use technology from the 90s lol

I HATE faxing stuff to them!!! My last employer disputed my claim and I had to fax like 20 pages of evidence and the stupid app kept failing halfway through. I ended up going to a UPS store and paying $24 to send it all! RIDICULOUS that in 2025 we're still using FAX machines!!!

Here's what you need to know about faxing to NYSDOL: 1. The correct fax number depends on what documents you're sending. Double-check the letter you received. 2. Include your NY.gov ID, claim ID, and last 4 digits of your SSN on EVERY page. 3. Use a fax app that provides delivery confirmation. I recommend eFax, FaxZero (free for limited pages), or HelloFax. 4. Send during off-peak hours (before 9am or after 6pm). 5. If using a mobile app, make sure your document scans are clear and high contrast. 6. Keep all confirmation receipts and follow up by phone after 5-7 business days if you don't see the documents reflected in your account.

•Thank you for the detailed info! The letter says I need to send it to the 518-402-xxxx number. Will definitely put my info on every page and send it during off-peak hours.

•It's because of security and legal requirements. Faxing is considered more secure for sensitive documents than regular email (which can be intercepted). The NYSDOL is bound by strict privacy laws about how they handle your personal information.

Update: I ended up using FaxZero this morning to send my documents. It was actually pretty easy! They give you 5 free faxes per day (up to 3 pages each). I got an email confirmation that it went through successfully. Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll update again if I run into any issues with them receiving it.

•Great choice! One more tip: call their automated system in about 3-4 business days and check if your claim status has updated. That's usually faster than waiting for them to contact you.

•Awesome that FaxZero worked for you! Just wanted to add - if you don't hear back within a week, don't panic. Sometimes it takes them a while to process even when they received it. But definitely follow Alice's advice about calling to check your status. Good luck with your claim!

Another option if the fax apps don't work out - most public libraries have fax machines you can use for a small fee (usually like $1-2 per page). I had to do this once when all the apps were giving me trouble. The librarians are usually pretty helpful too if you're not sure how to use the machine. Just make sure to bring exact change and have your documents ready to go!

•That's a great backup option! I didn't even think about libraries still having fax machines. Good to know there's a reliable fallback if the apps fail. Thanks for sharing that tip - definitely keeping it in mind for future reference!

Just went through this same situation a few weeks ago! I used the CamScanner app which has a built-in fax feature - worked perfectly and gave me instant confirmation. One thing I learned the hard way: make sure your documents are super clear and high contrast before sending. My first attempt got rejected because the scan was too blurry. Also, don't forget to include a cover page with your name, claim number, and what documents you're sending. The whole process was way less stressful than I expected once I got the hang of it!

•CamScanner is a solid choice! I've used it for other documents and the scan quality is really good. The tip about high contrast is so important - I made that mistake with a different app once and had to redo everything. Thanks for mentioning the cover page requirement too, that's definitely something that could get overlooked. Did you get any follow-up confirmation from NYSDOL that they actually processed your documents, or just the fax delivery confirmation?

•Thanks for the CamScanner recommendation! I'm definitely going to try that if FaxZero doesn't work out for any future documents. The high contrast tip is really helpful - I wouldn't have thought about that but it makes total sense that blurry scans would get rejected. Did you have to pay for the fax feature in CamScanner or is it included in the free version?
