Can't reach NY unemployment by phone while overseas - need to submit documents urgently

I'm currently out of the country and NY unemployment is asking for additional documents. Problem is I can't log into my account from overseas (keeps blocking my IP I think?) so I faxed all the papers they requested last week. Now I'm paranoid they'll lose my fax or just ignore it, and then my claim will get denied or delayed. Has anyone successfully contacted NY unemployment by phone recently? I need to confirm they received my docs and that everything's in order. Any specific numbers or tricks to actually get through to a human? I'm especially concerned since I'm calling from overseas so it's already complicated with time differences and international call rates. Thanks for any help! 😊

The main NY unemployment phone number is 1-888-209-8124, but as I'm sure you know, it's basically impossible to get through most of the time. Since you're overseas, try calling during their off-peak hours (early morning NY time). Sometimes if you call right when they open at 8:00 AM Eastern, the wait isn't as bad. Also, have you tried using a VPN to make it look like you're accessing the site from the US? That might help with the login issues.

Thanks for the number! I've tried calling a few times but never get through - just endless hold music. The VPN is a good idea though, I hadn't thought of that. I'll try downloading one today and see if I can bypass their geoblocking.

i had the same problem last month!! faxed my stuff 3 TIMES and they kept saying they never got it. so frustrating!!!! ended up having to email the documents to my sister who printed them and then mailed them with tracking. such a stupid process but it worked

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I don't have anyone in NY who could mail things for me. Did you ever manage to actually speak to someone on the phone?

I spent WEEKS trying to reach NY unemployment last month about a similar document issue. Calling that main number is completely useless - I'd be on hold for 3+ hours and then get disconnected. TOTAL GARBAGE SYSTEM. I finally broke down and used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 30 minutes. Yes, you have to pay for it, but honestly it saved my sanity. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE With your overseas situation, having a guaranteed callback might be worth it rather than dealing with international call rates while on hold forever.

paid service to reach a government agency we already pay for with our taxes??? this country is a joke

Yeah I get it, it's ridiculous we have to pay extra just to access basic services. But after weeks of frustration, I was desperate. International calling would probably cost more in the long run anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'd never heard of Claimyr before. Just watched their video - does it actually work? I'm willing to pay at this point since international calling rates are killing me just to sit on hold and get disconnected.

I recommend sending an email to the NYSDOL documents department at documents@labor.ny.gov with your full name, last 4 digits of your SSN, and a clear explanation of your situation. Include the date you faxed the documents, the fax number you used, and ask for confirmation of receipt. While they don't always respond quickly, they do typically process emailed documents. Make sure you scan all documents clearly and send them as PDF attachments. Also, if you can't reach them by phone, try contacting your state representative's office. They often have direct channels to unemployment offices and can help expedite document verification.

This is really helpful! I'll email them today with all the details of my fax. Do you know if there are any specific requirements for the subject line when emailing them? I want to make sure it doesn't get filtered out as spam.

0 coins

Use a simple subject line like "Document Submission Verification - [Your Full Name] - [Last 4 SSN]". That typically ensures it gets properly routed. Also, if you don't hear back within 5-7 business days, follow up with another email referencing your original message date.

have u tried the alternate number? i think its 888-783-1370. sometimes works better than the main one.

That number is specifically for filing new claims. It won't help with document verification issues, unfortunately.

I was in a similar situation last year when I was working temporarily in Canada. What worked for me was calling at exactly 7:58 AM Eastern Time - I'd start dialing then so I'd be in the queue right when their system opened at 8:00 AM. Still waited about 45 minutes, but at least got through. Also, I know this sounds weird, but try pressing 2 for Spanish and then ask for an English speaker when someone answers. The Spanish queue is often WAY shorter and they all speak English too. I've gotten through in 20 minutes this way before.

The Spanish option is brilliant! I'll definitely try that. And I'll set my alarm for the middle of the night to try calling right when they open. Worth losing some sleep if I can finally get this resolved. Thanks!

why are u overseas when ur collecting unemployment??? isnt that like... not allowed?? u need to be available for work in NY i thought

I'm not collecting right now - this is about documents they requested for a previous claim period when I WAS in NY. I'm overseas temporarily handling a family emergency, but need to resolve this so everything's in order when I return next month.

Did you try emailing them? I've had success with uiclaimadjudication@labor.ny.gov for document issues in the past. Include your full name, NY phone number, last 4 of SSN, and explain your situation clearly. They usually respond within 5-7 days.

That email address has been changed. The current one for claim issues is correctionrequest@labor.ny.gov, and for document submission specifically it's documents@labor.ny.gov as I mentioned in my previous comment.

Thanks for the correction! The system changes so often it's hard to keep track of the current contacts.

update????? did u get thru?? im having similar probs with them losing my stuff

Quick update - I used the Spanish option trick that someone suggested here and actually got through yesterday! Waited about 25 minutes instead of hours. They confirmed they received my fax but said I was missing one form (even though I sent it!). The agent was able to note in my account that I'm overseas temporarily and gave me a direct fax number to send the missing form. So if you're still having trouble, definitely try the Spanish option!

@a1978de8d17d That's awesome! Glad the Spanish option worked for you. Can you share that direct fax number they gave you? I've been having the same issue with them "losing" my documents and a direct line would be super helpful. Also, did they give you any timeline for when your case will be fully processed now that they have everything?

@a1978de8d17d That's great news! The Spanish option tip is gold - I'm definitely going to try that. Did they give you any specific timeline for processing once they have all your documents? I'm in a similar boat with missing paperwork and getting really anxious about potential delays.

@a1978de8d17d So glad you finally got through! That Spanish option tip is genius - I never would have thought of that. I'm dealing with a similar situation where they keep claiming they never received my documents. Could you share that direct fax number if you don't mind? Having a direct line would be a game changer for those of us stuck in this nightmare loop of re-sending the same paperwork over and over.

@a1978de8d17d Wow, that's fantastic that you got through! The Spanish option trick is brilliant - I would never have thought of that. I'm in a similar situation where I've been trying to reach them for weeks about missing documents. If you're comfortable sharing, could you post that direct fax number? It would be incredibly helpful for others dealing with the same "lost documents" runaround. Also, did the agent give you any sense of how long processing takes once they have everything? Thanks for updating us - it gives me hope that there's actually a way to reach a human being at that place!

I'm so glad someone finally got through! @a1978de8d17d that Spanish option tip is amazing - I never would have thought of that. I've been calling for 3 weeks straight about my own document issues and getting nowhere. For anyone else still struggling, I also found that if you call the main number and immediately press 0 followed by # it sometimes bypasses the automated menu and puts you straight into the general queue. Doesn't always work but worth trying. Also wanted to mention - if you're still overseas and having login issues, ExpressVPN worked for me when I was traveling. The US East Coast servers seem to work best for NY unemployment site access. Hope this helps others who are stuck in the same boat!

@b6acb3993ef9 Thanks for the additional tips! The 0 followed by # trick is something I haven't tried yet. I'm definitely going to give that a shot along with the Spanish option that worked for @a1978de8d17d. It's crazy that we have to resort to all these workarounds just to reach a government agency that's supposed to serve us. But at this point I'm willing to try anything! The ExpressVPN suggestion is helpful too - I've been struggling with the login issues from overseas so I'll look into that service.

This thread has been so helpful! I'm dealing with a similar overseas situation and have been banging my head against the wall trying to reach NY unemployment for weeks. @a1978de8d17d - congrats on finally getting through with the Spanish option! That's such a clever workaround. If you're comfortable sharing that direct fax number, it would be a lifesaver for those of us still stuck in document limbo. For anyone else still struggling, I wanted to add that I've had some luck using Google Voice to make the calls. Since it routes through US servers, it sometimes helps with international calling issues and you don't get hit with those crazy overseas rates while sitting on hold for hours. Also, I noticed someone mentioned contacting your state representative - this actually worked for a friend of mine last year. She reached out to her assemblyperson's office and they were able to get her connected to someone at NYSDOL within 48 hours. Worth a shot if the phone tricks don't work! Fingers crossed we all get this sorted out soon. The whole system is absolutely broken but at least we're helping each other navigate it! 🤞

@b10ddae3f4e8 The Google Voice tip is brilliant! I hadn't thought of using that to avoid international calling rates. I'm definitely going to set that up today. And you're absolutely right about the state representative option - I should have tried that earlier. Even though I'm overseas, I'm still a NY resident so my assemblyperson should be able to help. @a1978de8d17d thanks again for sharing your success story - it's given all of us hope that there's actually a way through this maze! The Spanish option trick is going to be my first attempt tomorrow morning. It's ridiculous that we have to crowdsource solutions just to access basic government services, but I'm grateful for this community. You've all provided more helpful information in one thread than I've gotten from hours of trying to navigate their official channels!
