Can't reach NY unemployment by phone while overseas - need to submit documents urgently
I'm currently out of the country and NY unemployment is asking for additional documents. Problem is I can't log into my account from overseas (keeps blocking my IP I think?) so I faxed all the papers they requested last week. Now I'm paranoid they'll lose my fax or just ignore it, and then my claim will get denied or delayed. Has anyone successfully contacted NY unemployment by phone recently? I need to confirm they received my docs and that everything's in order. Any specific numbers or tricks to actually get through to a human? I'm especially concerned since I'm calling from overseas so it's already complicated with time differences and international call rates. Thanks for any help! 😊

The main NY unemployment phone number is 1-888-209-8124, but as I'm sure you know, it's basically impossible to get through most of the time. Since you're overseas, try calling during their off-peak hours (early morning NY time). Sometimes if you call right when they open at 8:00 AM Eastern, the wait isn't as bad. Also, have you tried using a VPN to make it look like you're accessing the site from the US? That might help with the login issues.

•Thanks for the number! I've tried calling a few times but never get through - just endless hold music. The VPN is a good idea though, I hadn't thought of that. I'll try downloading one today and see if I can bypass their geoblocking.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I don't have anyone in NY who could mail things for me. Did you ever manage to actually speak to someone on the phone?

I spent WEEKS trying to reach NY unemployment last month about a similar document issue. Calling that main number is completely useless - I'd be on hold for 3+ hours and then get disconnected. TOTAL GARBAGE SYSTEM. I finally broke down and used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 30 minutes. Yes, you have to pay for it, but honestly it saved my sanity. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE With your overseas situation, having a guaranteed callback might be worth it rather than dealing with international call rates while on hold forever.

•paid service to reach a government agency we already pay for with our taxes??? this country is a joke

•Yeah I get it, it's ridiculous we have to pay extra just to access basic services. But after weeks of frustration, I was desperate. International calling would probably cost more in the long run anyway.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'd never heard of Claimyr before. Just watched their video - does it actually work? I'm willing to pay at this point since international calling rates are killing me just to sit on hold and get disconnected.

I recommend sending an email to the NYSDOL documents department at documents@labor.ny.gov with your full name, last 4 digits of your SSN, and a clear explanation of your situation. Include the date you faxed the documents, the fax number you used, and ask for confirmation of receipt. While they don't always respond quickly, they do typically process emailed documents. Make sure you scan all documents clearly and send them as PDF attachments. Also, if you can't reach them by phone, try contacting your state representative's office. They often have direct channels to unemployment offices and can help expedite document verification.

•This is really helpful! I'll email them today with all the details of my fax. Do you know if there are any specific requirements for the subject line when emailing them? I want to make sure it doesn't get filtered out as spam.

•Use a simple subject line like "Document Submission Verification - [Your Full Name] - [Last 4 SSN]". That typically ensures it gets properly routed. Also, if you don't hear back within 5-7 business days, follow up with another email referencing your original message date.

have u tried the alternate number? i think its 888-783-1370. sometimes works better than the main one.

•That number is specifically for filing new claims. It won't help with document verification issues, unfortunately.

I was in a similar situation last year when I was working temporarily in Canada. What worked for me was calling at exactly 7:58 AM Eastern Time - I'd start dialing then so I'd be in the queue right when their system opened at 8:00 AM. Still waited about 45 minutes, but at least got through. Also, I know this sounds weird, but try pressing 2 for Spanish and then ask for an English speaker when someone answers. The Spanish queue is often WAY shorter and they all speak English too. I've gotten through in 20 minutes this way before.

•The Spanish option is brilliant! I'll definitely try that. And I'll set my alarm for the middle of the night to try calling right when they open. Worth losing some sleep if I can finally get this resolved. Thanks!

•I'm not collecting right now - this is about documents they requested for a previous claim period when I WAS in NY. I'm overseas temporarily handling a family emergency, but need to resolve this so everything's in order when I return next month.

Did you try emailing them? I've had success with uiclaimadjudication@labor.ny.gov for document issues in the past. Include your full name, NY phone number, last 4 of SSN, and explain your situation clearly. They usually respond within 5-7 days.

•That email address has been changed. The current one for claim issues is correctionrequest@labor.ny.gov, and for document submission specifically it's documents@labor.ny.gov as I mentioned in my previous comment.

•Thanks for the correction! The system changes so often it's hard to keep track of the current contacts.

•Quick update - I used the Spanish option trick that someone suggested here and actually got through yesterday! Waited about 25 minutes instead of hours. They confirmed they received my fax but said I was missing one form (even though I sent it!). The agent was able to note in my account that I'm overseas temporarily and gave me a direct fax number to send the missing form. So if you're still having trouble, definitely try the Spanish option!
