Need clarification - which unemployment rules are actually true?
I'm so confused about all the different unemployment rules I keep hearing. My friend told me one thing, my coworker said something completely different, and the NYS Department of Labor website is hard to navigate. Can someone help clarify what's actually true about unemployment benefits? I just want to make sure I'm following the right procedures for my weekly claims and not getting bad advice.

There's a lot of misinformation floating around unfortunately. What specific unemployment rules are you confused about? The NYS Department of Labor has pretty clear guidelines but they can be overwhelming. Are you asking about job search requirements, weekly claim filing, or something else?

•Mainly about job search requirements and what happens if I work part time while collecting benefits. Someone told me I can't work at all but that doesn't sound right.

You definitely CAN work part time while collecting unemployment! The NYS Department of Labor has a formula where they reduce your benefits based on how much you earn, but you won't lose everything. You need to report all work and earnings on your weekly claim though. For job search, you need to make 3 work search contacts per week and keep records.

•This is exactly right. I work 2 days a week and still get partial benefits. Just make sure to report everything honestly on your weekly claim.

The biggest confusion I see is people mixing up adjudication with appeals. Adjudication is when NYS Department of Labor is investigating your claim - you just wait. An appeal is when they deny you and you disagree with their decision. Two totally different processes!

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone to get clarification, I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helped when I was stuck with questions about my claim status.

•How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call for weeks.

•Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of being on hold.
