NYS Department of Labor - will unemployment be extended again for 2025?
I'm currently receiving regular unemployment benefits and my claim is set to expire in about 6 weeks. With everything going on economically, does anyone know if there's talk about extending unemployment benefits again? I've been looking for work but the job market in my field is still pretty rough. My weekly claim amount isn't huge but it's keeping me afloat while I search. Has NYS Department of Labor said anything official about extensions?

From what I understand, regular unemployment benefits in New York are currently capped at 26 weeks maximum unless there's federal intervention. The state legislature would need to pass something or Congress would need to extend federal programs. Right now there's no automatic extension like we had during the pandemic. You should keep filing your weekly claims and maintain your job search requirements just in case something changes.

•Thanks for the info. I've been keeping up with my job search log and filing weekly. Just worried about what happens when my 26 weeks runs out.

There's a difference between Extended Benefits (EB) and emergency extensions. EB is triggered when unemployment rates hit certain thresholds in the state, but New York's rates would need to be much higher. Emergency extensions require federal action. Keep monitoring NYS Department of Labor announcements and maybe contact your representatives if you're concerned about policy.

•How do we know what the trigger rates are? Is there somewhere on the NYS Department of Labor website that shows this?

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to ask about your specific situation, I used claimyr.com recently to get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to get clarification on my claim status after weeks of busy signals. Might be worth checking if they have any inside info on extensions too.

•Did they charge you? I'm skeptical of these third party services but I also can't get through to NYS Department of Labor no matter when I call.

The system is so broken anyway. Even if they extend benefits the NYS Department of Labor website will probably crash and half of us won't be able to file our weekly claims. I've had nothing but problems with adjudication delays and getting locked out of my account.

Best advice is to stay informed through official channels - check the NYS Department of Labor website regularly and sign up for their email updates if available. Also make sure you're meeting all current requirements so you don't lose eligibility if something does get extended.
