I've been trying to get through to someone at NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my claim status but the phone lines are always busy. Getting really frustrated with the lack of communication. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a person there?
I had the same problem with getting through on the phone. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me connect with an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI) that shows how it works. Basically they handle the calling and waiting for you. I was able to get my claim status cleared up within a few days after waiting weeks trying to call myself.
If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor for any final questions about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an agent when I couldn't get through the regular phone lines. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped when I needed to clarify some things before my benefits ended.
Just whatever you do dont lie about the dates or try to hide the gap. HR departments can verify employment history easily now. Be upfront about being laid off, mention any productive activities during the unemployment period, and emphasize that you're ready to get back to work. Most reasonable employers will understand that good people sometimes get caught up in layoffs.
Been there! When I got laid off from my restaurant job last year it was super overwhelming at first. The key thing is don't delay filing even if you're confused about something. You can always call later to clarify details but you need to get that initial claim in. Also make sure you certify for benefits every week even if your claim is still pending - missing a week can mess up your whole timeline.
One more thing - if your claim goes into adjudication (which means they need to verify something about your eligibility), don't panic. It's pretty common and just means they're reviewing your case. It can take a few weeks but as long as you were honestly laid off and not fired for misconduct, you should be fine.
Adjudication just means NYS Department of Labor is reviewing your claim to verify you meet all the eligibility requirements. It's not bad, just a standard review process. They might contact your former employer to confirm the reason for separation. Just be patient and respond promptly to any requests for information.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about DUA eligibility, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was stuck trying to figure out if I qualified for DUA or regular UI after storm damage, and talking to an actual NYS Department of Labor rep helped me understand which program applied to my situation.

Just want to add that DUA applications usually have pretty tight deadlines once they open up. I think it's like 30 days from when the application period starts? Don't wait around if you think you might qualify - get your paperwork together now in case they announce DUA is available for your flooding incident.
