NYS Department of Labor unemployment extension - how long does it actually last?

My regular unemployment benefits are running out in about 3 weeks and I'm trying to figure out if there are any extensions available through NYS Department of Labor. I've been getting UI for about 20 weeks now and still haven't found steady work. I keep hearing different things about how long unemployment extension programs last - some people say 13 weeks, others mention 20 weeks. Does anyone know what the current situation is with extensions in New York? I really need to plan my budget and know what to expect.

Extension programs depend on the state's unemployment rate and federal legislation. NYS Department of Labor typically offers Extended Benefits (EB) when unemployment rates hit certain triggers, but it's usually 13 weeks maximum. You should check your online account for any automatic extension notices - they'll show up there first before you get mailed anything.

Thanks! I checked my account but don't see anything about extensions yet. Should I wait until my benefits actually run out or apply for something now?

I went through this last year and the extension was automatic - didn't have to do anything special. NYS Department of Labor just continued my weekly claims seamlessly. But that was when unemployment rates were higher, not sure about now. You'll still need to keep doing your job search requirements though, they get stricter during extensions.

Same experience here. The job search log requirements definitely increased during my extension period.

honestly the whole system is confusing as hell... I thought there were no more extensions after all the covid stuff ended but then my friend got one last month?? makes no sense

The pandemic-era programs like PEUC ended, but state-specific Extended Benefits can still trigger based on unemployment rates. It's a different program entirely.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask about your specific situation, I had luck using claimyr.com - they helped me get connected to an actual agent who could explain my extension eligibility. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than spending hours on hold.

Never heard of that service before. Did they charge you anything to help get through?

They do charge but it was worth it to actually talk to someone who could check my account. Saved me from calling 50 times myself.

Extensions aren't guaranteed - depends on your state's unemployment rate compared to previous years. Right now I don't think New York qualifies for the federal triggers but things change monthly.

I'm in a similar situation - my benefits are ending soon too. From what I've researched, New York's Extended Benefits program is tied to specific unemployment rate triggers that have to be met at the state level. The program can provide up to 13 additional weeks, but only when the state's unemployment rate is significantly higher than it was in previous years. I'd recommend calling NYS DOL directly or checking their website for current trigger status, since this changes based on monthly employment data. Even if extensions aren't available right now, they could become available if economic conditions change.
