NYS Department of Labor - which type of unemployment is the least harmful and will always exist?
I'm taking an economics class and we're studying different types of unemployment. My professor mentioned that some types are actually normal and not necessarily bad for the economy. I'm trying to understand which type is considered the least harmful and will always exist even in a healthy economy. I know NYS Department of Labor deals with all kinds of unemployment claims, but I'm curious about the economic theory behind it. Does anyone know which type economists consider unavoidable and actually healthy?

You're probably thinking of frictional unemployment. That's when people are temporarily between jobs while searching for new positions or transitioning careers. It's considered normal because people are always moving between jobs, graduating from school, or relocating. Even in the best economy, there will always be some people in transition periods.

•That makes sense! So even when the economy is doing well, there are always people looking for better opportunities or just starting their careers.

yeah frictional unemployment is what your looking for. its actually good because it means people have choices and can find better jobs. when i filed my claim with NYS Department of Labor last year it was because i left my old job to find something better in my field

Frictional unemployment is correct - it's the natural job search process. Unlike cyclical unemployment (from economic downturns) or structural unemployment (from industry changes), frictional unemployment happens even at full employment. It reflects a dynamic, healthy labor market where workers can seek better matches for their skills.

•This is really helpful for understanding the different types. I was confused about why some unemployment is considered normal vs problematic.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor for any unemployment questions, I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really useful when you need to talk to someone about your claim status.

•Thanks but I'm not filing a claim - just trying to understand the economics concepts for my class!

Your professor is right that some unemployment is normal. Frictional unemployment shows that workers have mobility and choices, which economists view positively. It's very different from the unemployment that results from recessions or when entire industries become obsolete.
