NYS Department of Labor unemployment numbers - how many people are currently claiming benefits?
Does anyone know how many people are currently receiving unemployment benefits in New York? I've been trying to find current statistics on how many people on unemployment there are right now but the NYS Department of Labor website doesn't seem to have updated numbers. My claim has been pending for weeks and I'm wondering if there's just a massive backlog because so many people are filing. Are the numbers higher than usual this year?

The NYS Department of Labor releases monthly statistics but they're usually about 6-8 weeks behind. Last I saw, there were around 180,000 people receiving regular UI benefits statewide, but that doesn't include people waiting for adjudication or those on standby status. Your pending claim is probably more about their verification process than volume - adjudication can take 4-6 weeks regardless of how busy they are.

•That's actually helpful to know it's not just volume related. I was starting to think they were completely overwhelmed.

•There's no queue system that shows your position, but you can check your claim status on my.ny.gov. If it says 'adjudication in progress' that usually means they're reviewing your work history or eligibility. The waiting is the worst part honestly.

I had to reach out to an NYS Department of Labor agent directly when my claim was stuck in adjudication for over a month. Couldn't get through on the phone for weeks until I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they actually got me connected to someone who explained exactly what was holding up my claim. There's even a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Turned out they needed additional verification of my last employer.

•Never heard of that service before but honestly anything is better than calling 50 times a day and getting hung up on. Did they charge you a lot?

•Worth it for me since I was losing my mind trying to get through. They focus on getting you connected rather than the cost being an issue. Way less stressful than the regular phone maze.

The unemployment system is such a joke. They make it impossible to get real information and then wonder why people are frustrated. I've been dealing with NYS Department of Labor for months and still can't get straight answers about anything.

•I feel you on that - the whole system seems designed to make you give up

For what it's worth, the current unemployment rate in NY is around 4.2% which translates to roughly 400,000 people actively looking for work, but not all of them qualify for or are receiving UI benefits. The actual number receiving benefits is much lower than that.
