NYS Department of Labor unemployment rates - how much has unemployment increased 2025?

I keep seeing conflicting numbers about how much unemployment has increased this year in New York. My neighbor got laid off in January and said the NYS Department of Labor office told her unemployment was way up from last year. I'm worried about my own job security and trying to understand what's really happening. Does anyone know the actual numbers for 2025? Are more people filing claims with NYS Department of Labor compared to 2024? I've been at my company for 3 years but they've been talking about budget cuts.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases monthly unemployment data, but there's usually a 1-2 month lag. For New York specifically, the NYS Department of Labor publishes state unemployment statistics on their website. From what I've seen, the January 2025 numbers showed a slight uptick from December 2024, but it's still within normal seasonal variation. You can check the official NYS Department of Labor labor market data section for the most current figures.

Thanks for pointing me to the right place. I'll check the NYS Department of Labor site directly instead of relying on news articles that seem to be all over the place with their numbers.

unemployment always goes up in january anyway bc of holiday layoffs. my cousin works at the NYS Department of Labor processing center and she said they're definitely busier than last january but not crazy busy like during covid

That's a good point about seasonal patterns. The NYS Department of Labor adjusts for seasonal factors in their reporting, so if you're seeing increases in the seasonally adjusted numbers, that's more meaningful than the raw counts.

I've been tracking this because I'm in HR and need to stay on top of labor market trends. New York's unemployment rate in early 2025 has increased by about 0.4 percentage points compared to the same period last year. It's not dramatic, but it's noticeable. The NYS Department of Labor data shows most of the increase is in manufacturing and retail sectors. If you're in a stable industry like healthcare or government, you're probably fine.

I work in logistics for a mid-size company. Not sure if that counts as stable these days with all the supply chain changes.

When I was trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor last month about my claim status, I used a service called Claimyr that helped me actually reach someone. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals and might be helpful if you need to contact them about unemployment benefits.

The whole system is rigged anyway. They manipulate these numbers to make politicians look good. I've been unemployed since November and the NYS Department of Labor keeps finding excuses to delay my payments. Half the people I know who lost jobs aren't even counted in the statistics because they gave up looking or are doing gig work.

Sorry you're dealing with payment delays. That's really frustrating.
