NY unemployment website missing 'file a claim' option - am I going crazy?

So I got laid off from my retail job about two weeks ago and I'm trying to file for unemployment for the first time. I created an account on the ny unemployment website yesterday and logged in, but I'm totally confused because there's no option anywhere to actually file a new claim? I've been clicking around for hours and nothing. The main dashboard just shows account information and some announcements, but no clear button or link to start a new claim. Is the system glitched or am I missing something obvious? I tried calling the helpline but kept getting disconnected after 45 minutes on hold. My coworker who got laid off the same day somehow managed to file her claim last week without any issues. I'm getting really anxious since rent is due soon and I need this process started ASAP. Has anyone else had this problem recently?

The UI system is super confusing. Try going to "My Online Services" first, then look for "Unemployment Services" and there should be a option that says "File A Claim". If you dont see it, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser (Chrome worked best for me). Sometimes the site just crashes during high volume times too. Keep trying at odd hours like early morning.

Thanks! I'll try Chrome instead. Been using Firefox and maybe thats the issue. I'll try at like 6am tomorrow too. Appreciate the help!

omg yes the early morning trick works!! I logged in at 5:30am and suddenly all the options appeared that weren't there before! The system is such garbage.

After wasting 2 full days trying to get through on the site, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback with an actual agent. They helped me file my claim over the phone since the website was bugging out for me too. Talking to an agent got my benefits processed so much faster than trying to figure out the website. They even have a demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Yeah 100% real. I was desperate after trying for days. The agent fixed everything in one call and I got my confirmation email the same day. Best decision i made during this whole unemployment mess.

sounds like another scam trying to profit off desperate people 🙄 why would we pay for something that should be free?

not a scam at all. i was skeptical too but it was worth every penny to not waste another week trying to get through. my benefits are already processing now. do what you want but im just sharing what worked for me 🤷‍♀️

Just checked out that link and it actually makes a ton of sense... they basically just wait on hold for you? I've been trying for 3 days straight with no luck getting through

I've worked with NY unemployment for 3 yrs (not anymore thank god). Most common issue: people accidentally create an NY.gov ID instead of going through the unemployment portal directly. Try going directly to https://unemployment.labor.ny.gov and click "File A New Claim". If that doesn't work, your account might be flagged for identity verification. Only solution then is calling unfortunately.

This might be it! I think I did create an NY.gov account first. I'll try going through the direct link you shared. Thanks!

I had EXACTLY the same problem. Turns out I was logging into my general NY account but not the specific unemployment portal. Such a confusing system!

Sometimes there's a maintenance message that doesn't actually show up but the site is down. I've learned that if you don't see what you expect, try again in a few hours. Also strangely the mobile version sometimes shows different options than desktop. Have you tried on your phone?

I haven't tried on my phone actually! That's a good idea, will give it a shot right now.

Honest opinion from someone who went through this last month: CALL THEM. The website is a disaster, filled with broken links and missing options. I spent 5 days trying to file online before I finally got through on the phone and finished my claim in 15 minutes. The phone wait is horrible but once you get a person, they can actually fix things.

But how did you actually get through??? I've called 50+ times and just get disconnected!

I called exactly at 8:00am when they open. Got placed on hold for 2hrs but at least didn't get disconnected. Some ppl have luck calling at 7:55am - sometimes they open the lines a few mins early.

I've heard some people actually use claimyr.com to get through to them. Haven't tried it myself but a friend did and got through same day.

Real talk: literally EVERY SINGLE PERSON I know has had problems filing for NY unemployment. The system is completely broken. It took me 3 weeks to finally get my claim submitted. If the website isn't working, your only options are to: 1. Keep trying the website at different times (early morning seems to work better) 2. Call repeatedly until you get through (be prepared to spend hours) 3. Use a paid service like Claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you 4. Contact your state representative's office - they sometimes have direct lines Don't give up! The system is designed to frustrate people into giving up on their rightful benefits.

The state rep office trick worked for me! They have special contacts and got my case fixed in 48hrs after I spent weeks getting nowhere!

facts. I legit think they make it hard on purpose to reduce the number of people who successfully claim

I'll vouch for Claimyr - used it last week after 3 failed days of calling. Worth every penny when you're desperate.

There's a weird bug where if you logged into other state services before, the cookies mess up the unemployment portal. Try clearing ALL cookies from your browser or use incognito mode!

Incognito mode!! Why didn't I think of that? Will try right now, thanks!

check if your address has a mismatch. i had EXACT same issue, turns out my address in the system had 'street' abbreviated as 'st' in one system but spelled out in another. agent told me system flags accounts with ANY info mismatches and hides the file claim button 🤦‍♂️

ive been on unemployment 3 different times in NY. each time the system changed and got worse lol. but what worked for me last time (december) was using Internet Explorer (yes seriously). chrome and firefox both had weird glitches where buttons disappeared, but good old IE showed everything correctly. worth a try if nothing else is working!

Internet Explorer??? That browser is ancient 😂 But honestly nothing about ny unemployment surprises me anymore

u might hav accidently signed up for the employer portal instead of the claimant portal. happened to me. you need to make a whole new account with different email. the system wont tell u this btw, it just silently fails.

I just went through this EXACT issue!! Here's what I had to do - go to the NY labor department page first (not ny.gov), then click on 'individuals', then 'unemployment benefits', THEN 'file a claim'. Any other way and the option disappears. The site navigation is completely broken. If that doesn't work, try this direct link: https://applications.labor.ny.gov/IndividualReg/ (I saved it after I finally found it

Someone else mentioned claimyr and I jus wanna second that it works. I was LOSING MY MIND trying to file when the website kept erroring out. Paid for their service and had an agent on the phone within an hour who filed everything for me. My claim is now processing. claimyr.com saved me weeks of frustration

how does it actually work? do they just connect you or what?

0 coins

They basically call for you and wait on hold (which was taking me 3+ hours when I could even get through). When they reach an agent, you get a call connecting you directly to that person. Agent helped me file everything over the phone.

just remember that the site does maintenance every night from like 12-7am and sometimes features disappear during that time even though the site seems to be working still
