Can you call NY unemployment to file a new claim or must it be online?
I lost my job last week and need to file for unemployment in New York. The website is confusing me and keeps timing out when I try to create an account. Can I just call them directly to file my initial claim? The automated system isn't giving me this option and I've been trying to get through to a person for 2 days with no luck. Has anyone successfully filed their initial NY unemployment claim by phone recently? Or am I wasting my time and should just keep fighting with the website?

Yes, you can file a new NY unemployment claim by phone! Call 1-888-209-8124 during their business hours (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm). Be prepared for long wait times though. Have your employment info for the last 18 months ready (employer names, addresses, phone numbers, employment dates). While the phone system is an option, the website is actually faster when it's working properly - maybe try late evening when traffic is lower? Clear your browser cache or try a different browser if it keeps timing out.

•Thank you! I'll try calling tomorrow morning. Do you happen to know if they ask the same questions on the phone as they do online? Just trying to make sure I have everything ready.

I tried calling DOZENS of times last month when I needed to file. Every time I called 1-888-209-8124, I'd get stuck in a loop of automated menus and then it would say "due to high call volume" and disconnect me. I finally got through after 3 DAYS of calling. The online system worked fine for me eventually but I had to use Microsoft Edge browser - Chrome kept crashing on their site for some reason.

•Same here!!! The phone system is BROKEN. I got hung up on 9 times before I finally got thru. When I finally talked to someone they were actually pretty helpful tho

i filed by phone in january. took like 4 hours on hold but it worked. they ask basically the same stuff as the website. make sure u have ur social security card and id ready, plus all the job info. they want exact start/end dates and supervisor names which i didnt have so that made it take longer

•Thanks for the heads-up about needing exact dates and supervisor names. I have most of that info but I'll make sure to dig up my old supervisor's name before I call.

After wasting two whole days repeatedly calling that number last month, I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to a live agent at NYSDOL. They have a system that basically does the calling and waiting for you, then connects you when there's an actual human on the line. I was skeptical but I was desperate and it worked for me. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•I've also used Claimyr when my benefits suddenly stopped last month. Saved me hours of frustration. But to answer OP's original question - yes, you absolutely CAN file a new claim by phone, but online is the "preferred" method according to the rep I spoke with. If the website is giving you trouble, keep trying the phone but be prepared for a wait.

I think they want everyone to file online but they have to offer phone as an option too. When I filed my claim back in February, the website kept glitching on the employment history page. I ended up having to call, was on hold for like 2 hours, but the rep was super nice and walked me through everything! So yes, phone works but be patient.

•Thanks everyone, this is all really helpful! I'm going to try the website one more time tonight when traffic might be lower, and if that doesn't work I'll try calling first thing tomorrow morning. Might check out that Claimyr thing too if I keep getting nowhere.

Just FYI last time I called the unemployment office they told me filing online is way faster for getting your first payment. Something about the phone claims taking longer to process??? Not sure if thats true but thats what they said.

•That's actually correct - online claims typically process 1-3 days faster than phone claims because they don't require manual data entry by a claims processor. If you can get the website to work, it's ultimately the faster option both for application and payment. Try accessing the site during off-hours (early morning or late evening) when server load is lower.

One important thing to note: whether you file by phone or online, you still need to CERTIFY weekly by either method. A lot of people file their initial claim and think that's it, but you have to certify every week to actually get paid. You can certify by phone using their automated system at 1-888-581-5812 or through the website. Just wanted to mention this since it's a common issue for first-time filers.

•Oh that's good to know! I wasn't aware of the weekly certification requirement. Once my claim is approved, do they send instructions about how to certify? And what day of the week do you have to do it?

Yes, they'll send you instructions after your claim is processed. In New York, you can certify starting Sunday for the previous week ending Saturday. You have until the following Saturday to certify, but I recommend doing it Sunday or Monday to get your payment as quickly as possible. You'll need to report any work/earnings for the week and confirm you were ready, willing and able to work. The process takes about 5 minutes once you get the hang of it.

•Perfect, thank you! I managed to get the website working this morning (tried at 6am and it was much faster). Just submitted my claim online. Appreciate all the help everyone!

•Congrats on getting through the website! That early morning trick really works. Just a heads up - save your confirmation number from when you filed and keep checking your online account. They'll post updates there about your claim status, and you should get a monetary determination letter within about a week telling you your weekly benefit amount. Good luck with everything!

•@Sean Matthews That s'awesome that you got it working! The early morning strategy definitely helps avoid the rush. One more tip - make sure to set up direct deposit in your account if you haven t'already. It s'way faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. Also keep all your documentation handy because sometimes they request additional verification documents even after approval.
