NY unemployment tax refund for $12,200 non-taxable amount - anyone get it on emerald card?

Hey everyone! Just wondering if anyone has gotten their NY unemployment tax refund for the $12,200 non-taxable amount loaded onto their H&R Block emerald card yet? I've been checking my account like crazy. I see some posts from people saying they had a 4/15/2025 deposit date and it's already hit their regular bank accounts. Has anyone with the emerald card gotten theirs early? I'm getting anxious waiting and could really use that money right now. Thanks for any info!

Thanks for letting me know! Did you get the full amount you were expecting? Wondering if I should anticipate any surprises...

The timing depends on your financial institution. H&R Block emerald cards typically take 1-3 business days longer than direct deposits to traditional banks. This is because prepaid cards often process ACH transfers in batches rather than immediately. If people with traditional banks are seeing 4/15 deposits arrive now, emerald card holders will likely see them between 4/16-4/18. You can also check your tax transcript on the NY tax department website for the most accurate scheduled date.

Tax transcript doesn't always show it either! Mine didn't update until AFTER the money was in my account lol. The whole system is a mess.

I use the emerald card too and always seem to get everything later than everyone else!!!! SO FRUSTRATING. Last year when I got my regular state refund everyone with regular banks got it like 5 days before me even though we all filed the same day. The emerald card is the WORST for getting government payments but I'm stuck with it because I don't have a regular bank account. Checking mine hourly and NOTHING yet. Will update if it comes in.

I actually had a similar issue last year, and I found that calling H&R Block directly sometimes helps. They can see pending deposits that haven't posted to your card yet. When I was waiting for my NY unemployment back payments, they could tell me exactly when it would post - turned out it was already in their system but hadn't shown up on my end yet. Maybe give them a call? Their customer service number should be on the back of your card.

I have the emerald card and got mine this morning! It wasn't showing pending or anything, just suddenly appeared at 6:30am. My deposit date was supposed to be 4/15 so it came exactly on time. Check yours - maybe it's there now?

Just checked again and nothing yet. My transcript doesn't even show a date, just says "processing" which is why I'm getting nervous. How much did you get if you don't mind me asking? Was it what you expected?

I got $1,464 which was about what I calculated. But I only collected for 16 weeks.

The New York Department of Taxation and Finance is distributing these unemployment tax refunds in batches based on filing date and complexity. If you filed after February 15th, 2025, your refund may be in a later batch. Additionally, emerald cards and similar prepaid debit cards typically receive federal and state deposits 1-3 days after traditional banks due to their processing systems. If your tax transcript doesn't show a date yet, that generally means your return is still in the review queue. This doesn't necessarily indicate a problem - just that they haven't processed it yet. If it's been more than 6 weeks since you filed, it might be worth contacting the NY tax department directly to confirm there are no issues with your return.

Thanks for the detailed info! I filed on February 3rd so I should be in an earlier batch. It's been over 8 weeks now. I've been trying to call the tax department but can't get through to anyone. Is there a special number or time that works better for reaching them?

The standard NY tax department phone lines can be extremely difficult to reach this time of year. If you've been trying without success, you might want to try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that helps you get through to government agencies including the NY tax department. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when an agent is available. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Since you filed back in February and haven't received any communication, it's definitely worth speaking to someone directly to check if there's an issue with your refund or if it's just in the queue.

The amount can vary based on your effective tax rate and whether you had taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits initially. The refund is based on the taxes you paid on that $12,200 of unemployment income, not the full $12,200 itself. If your effective tax rate was around 7-8%, an $876 refund would be in the expected range.

For anyone still waiting, I spoke with an H&R Block representative yesterday about emerald card deposits specifically. They confirmed they're receiving the unemployment tax refund batches from New York on the scheduled dates, but they process them in order of receipt. Most emerald card holders should see their refunds within 24-48 hours of the official deposit date on their tax transcript. Also worth noting - if you've closed your emerald card or haven't used it in over 90 days, they may have difficulty processing the deposit. In that case, NY will likely mail you a paper check instead, which takes an additional 2-3 weeks.

This is super helpful info! I use my emerald card regularly so that shouldn't be an issue. Did they say anything about how to check if there might be a problem with the deposit?

Yes, they said if it's been more than 3 business days after your scheduled deposit date (from your tax transcript), you should call H&R Block's emerald card services directly. They can check if the deposit was attempted but rejected for some reason. Sometimes there can be verification issues if the name format on your tax return doesn't exactly match your emerald card account.

Why is New York always SO SLOW with everything?? I'm in the same boat waiting. My brother lives in Ohio and got his state unemployment tax adjustment like 3 weeks ago already. Meanwhile NY is dragging their feet as usual. Don't even get me started on how they handled the original unemployment claims last year!!!

I know right?? I waited 11 weeks for my initial claim to be processed last year. Absolute nightmare. But to be fair, they're handling millions more claims than most other states.
