NY unemployment login keeps saying 'session expired' - can't access my account
I've been trying to log into my NY unemployment account for the past day and it keeps showing an error saying my 'session has expired'??? I haven't even been able to get in once! Every time I enter my NY.gov ID and password correctly, it just boots me back to the login page with that message. I need to certify by Sunday or I'll miss my payment. Does anyone know what that means or how to fix it? Is the website down or something?

This happened to me last month. It's usually one of three things: 1. Your browser cache is full - try clearing cookies and cache 2. The NY.gov system is doing maintenance (they often do it overnight on Thursdays) 3. Your account might be flagged for identity verification Try using a different browser first. If that doesn't work, try the NY.gov password reset even if you know your password is correct. Sometimes that refreshes your session token.

•Thanks, I'll try clearing my cache right now. Do you know if this means I'll miss my certification deadline? I'm freaking out a bit because I really need this payment.

Same thing happening to me right now! Been trying since yesterday evening. Their system is probably down again.

•That actually makes me feel a little better that it's not just me. Have you found any workaround yet?

•Nope, still locked out. Calling them now but been on hold forever.

This is a known issue with the NY.gov ID system that's been happening throughout January 2025. The "session expired" message is misleading - it actually means there's a synchronization issue between the NY.gov ID system and the Unemployment Insurance portal. Here's what to do: 1. Wait 30 minutes before trying again (this sometimes resolves on its own) 2. Clear all cookies specifically for ny.gov domains 3. Try logging in directly through https://unemployment.labor.ny.gov instead of through the main NY.gov page 4. If that doesn't work, you'll need to call NYSDOL at 888-209-8124 Don't worry about your certification deadline - if you can document that you tried to certify but couldn't access the system, you can request a backdated certification once you get through.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I tried all three steps but still no luck. Guess I'll have to call. I've been trying their number all morning but can't get through... just endless hold times.

I went through this exact nightmare last week! After trying EVERYTHING (clearing cache, different browsers, etc.) I finally gave up trying to call their regular number because I was on hold for 2+ hours and kept getting disconnected. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual unemployment agent in about 15 minutes. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me so much time and stress! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through, the agent had to manually reset something on my account - apparently my session was stuck in some kind of error state that I couldn't fix myself. Back online now and was able to backdate my certification.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out if I can't get through today. Did they tell you what caused the error in the first place? I just want to make sure it doesn't happen again next week.

THIS IS SO INFURIATING!!!! I've been dealing with this EXACT ISSUE since Monday!!! The system is CLEARLY broken but they don't bother fixing it or even ACKNOWLEDGING there's a problem! I've called 31 TIMES and either get disconnected or wait on hold for hours only to get disconnected again!!! I'm already behind on rent and if I miss this week's payment I'm screwed!!! WHY IS THIS SYSTEM SO BROKEN?!?

•Breathe, we're all in the same boat. System crashes happen every few months. They'll eventually extend the certification deadline if enough people complain.

UPDATE for everyone having this issue: I just saw on the NYSDOL Twitter that they're aware of the login issues and are working on a fix. They said if you're unable to certify due to login problems, they will allow backdated certifications for this week. Check their social media for official updates.

•Thank you so much for this update! That's a huge relief. I'll keep trying to log in but it's good to know they're aware of the problem.

Glad you got in! For future reference, when you encounter login issues: 1. Check NYSDOL social media for system alerts 2. Try mobile app or mobile browser (often works when desktop fails) 3. Call early in the morning (right when they open at 8:00 AM) 4. Document all your attempts to log in (screenshots with dates/times) The system does schedule maintenance regularly, but they usually post warnings in advance. Always try to certify early in your window rather than waiting until the last day.

•Thanks for all these tips! I'll definitely certify earlier next time. Is there any way to sign up for text alerts about system maintenance or outages? Would be nice to know in advance.

•I don't think they have text alerts, but you can follow @NYSLabor on Twitter - they usually post updates there when there are system issues. You can also turn on notifications for their tweets so you get alerts on your phone. That's how I found out about this outage earlier.

This exact same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago! It's so frustrating when you're trying to certify and the system just won't let you in. I ended up having to wait about 3 hours and then suddenly it started working again - I think their servers just get overloaded sometimes. One thing that helped me was logging out completely from ALL NY.gov sites (not just the unemployment portal), then waiting like 10-15 minutes before trying again. Also make sure you're going directly to unemployment.labor.ny.gov rather than going through the main NY.gov portal - sometimes that bypass works better. Don't panic about missing your certification deadline! I've had to call them before about technical issues and they're usually pretty understanding when it's clearly a system problem on their end. Keep trying different browsers and devices, and definitely document when you're trying to log in (take screenshots of the error messages) in case you need to prove you attempted to certify on time.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'm definitely going to try logging out of all NY.gov sites and waiting before trying again. And you're right about documenting everything - I wish I had taken screenshots earlier but I'll start doing that now. It's reassuring to know that others have gotten through this same issue. Did you end up having any problems with your certification timing when you finally got back in?

I just went through this exact same nightmare last week! The "session expired" error is super misleading - it's actually a backend sync issue between NY.gov ID and their unemployment system. Here's what finally worked for me after trying everything else: 1. Log out of EVERYTHING NY.gov related (not just unemployment) 2. Clear your browser cache AND cookies specifically for ny.gov domains 3. Wait at least 20 minutes (this is crucial - don't rush it!) 4. Try logging in directly through unemployment.labor.ny.gov instead of going through the main NY.gov portal 5. If you're still stuck, try using your phone's browser in private/incognito mode The mobile workaround that @Maya mentioned actually saved me too! Sometimes their mobile interface bypasses whatever server issues are happening on desktop. Don't stress about the certification deadline - I called when this happened to me and they said as long as you can show you attempted to certify (screenshots help!), they'll backdate it once the system is fixed. The rep told me this is a recurring issue they're aware of but haven't been able to permanently resolve yet. Keep trying different combinations and you'll eventually get through! 🤞

•Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! I've been pulling my hair out over this issue. Just tried your exact steps - logged out of everything NY.gov, cleared cache/cookies, waited 25 minutes, and then used the direct unemployment.labor.ny.gov link. Still getting the same error unfortunately, but I'm going to try the mobile browser approach next. It's really reassuring to know this is a known issue and that they'll allow backdated certifications. I was panicking thinking I'd lose my benefits over a technical glitch. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what worked for you!

•I'm dealing with this same exact issue right now! Been locked out since yesterday morning. Just tried your step-by-step method and I'm still getting the session expired error, but I'm going to keep trying the mobile approach. Really glad to hear they'll backdate certifications - I was worried I'd lose my benefits over something that's clearly on their end. Has anyone figured out if there's a specific time of day when the system is more likely to work? Like early morning or late evening when there might be less traffic on their servers?
