NY unemployment direct deposit card expired - 5 months trying to get new card

I'm at my wits end with this NY unemployment card situation. My direct deposit card expired 5 months ago and I also moved apartments around the same time. Since then I've been jumping through endless hoops trying to get my new card and access my benefits. I finally managed to get through to an actual person at unemployment yesterday (after literally hundreds of calls) and they're now telling me I need to resubmit all the paperwork I already submitted months ago! The bank that issues the cards has been absolutely no help whatsoever. I've called them at least 10 times and they just keep bouncing me back to unemployment. Has anyone else dealt with this nightmare? How did you finally get your replacement card after moving? I have bills piling up and really need to access these funds.

same thing happened to me when i moved last winter. took forever! did u update ur address in BOTH the unemployment portal AND with the bank card people? gotta do both or it gets stuck in limbo

I updated my address with unemployment right away, but honestly I'm not sure if I did it properly with the bank. Their automated system is so confusing. How exactly did you update it with the bank? Did you have to mail something in or was there a specific number to call?

This is a common issue that happens with address changes combined with card expirations. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, update your address in BOTH systems - NY.gov account AND with KeyBank (if that's who issues your card) 2. Request a replacement card specifically through KeyBank at 866-295-2955 3. When speaking with KeyBank, get a reference number for your call 4. Then contact NYSDOL with that reference number to verify the address change is in their system 5. Ask NYSDOL to initiate a "forced card reissuance" - this is key language to use The problem is that when addresses don't match across systems, the cards get sent back. I've helped several people through this exact situation.

Thank you SO MUCH for these detailed steps! I had no idea there was such a thing as a "forced card reissuance" - nobody at unemployment mentioned that term to me. I'll call KeyBank first thing tomorrow morning and get that reference number, then try unemployment again. Really appreciate your help!

Oh gosh, I'm going through something similar right now and I'm terrified I'll end up waiting 5 months too! My card expires next month and I just moved last week. Should I be proactively calling both unemployment and the bank now? What documentation do I need to have ready? I'm so anxious about losing access to my benefits even for a few weeks...

Yes, definitely be proactive! Update your address immediately with both NYSDOL and the card issuer. For documentation, have your NY.gov ID, PIN, current card number (but don't share the full number online), and some form of ID ready. Also keep records of when you made each change and who you spoke with. Being proactive now will save you from the situation the original poster is experiencing.

dont bother with the paperwork again its a waste of time. they always say that but its just to get u off the phone. my brother had same issue he just kept calling till he got someone who actually helped

That's what I was worried about - that resubmitting everything would just reset the clock and I'd be waiting another 5 months. How many times did your brother have to call before getting someone helpful?

I had this EXACT problem in January, and let me tell you, calling repeatedly was driving me INSANE. I was getting nowhere for weeks. What finally worked for me was using this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual NYSDOL agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever or getting hung up on. They basically call for you and then connect you when they reach a human. I was skeptical but desperate, and it actually worked! The agent I got was able to push through my card reissue that day. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or see their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I got through to a competent agent, they fixed everything on their end with KeyBank and my new card arrived in about 5 business days. Such a relief after months of frustration!

wait does this actually work? seems weird to have a service just to call unemployment for you lol

Thank you for suggesting this! I've literally been trying to call for months with no luck. At this point I'll try anything that might actually get me through to someone who can help. I'll check out that video and probably give it a shot tomorrow. Did you have to explain your whole situation again to the agent or did they have access to your previous calls/notes?

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM IS BROKEN BY DESIGN!!!! They make it IMPOSSIBLE to get your benefits even though YOU EARNED THEM!!! I went through this exact nightmare last year and had to contact my STATE REPRESENTATIVE to finally get it resolved after SIX MONTHS of trying. The unemployment office and the bank just keep pointing fingers at each other while we suffer. Document EVERYTHING and be prepared to fight for what's rightfully yours. This is how they save money - by making the process so frustrating that people give up!!!!

this is actually good advice tho. my cousin had to call her assembly person when her case was stuck for months and it got fixed in like a week after that

One more important tip: When you do get your new card, immediately set up direct deposit to your personal bank account instead. This eliminates these card expiration problems completely. You can set this up in your NY.gov account under payment methods. You'll need your account number and routing number ready.

I didn't even realize this was an option! That would solve so many problems. Thank you for mentioning this - I'll definitely set up direct deposit to my regular bank account as soon as I get this current mess sorted out.

btw did they tell u how long it'll take for the new card after u resubmit everything?

They said 7-10 business days, but given how everything else has gone, I'm not holding my breath. I'll update here when/if I actually receive it!

I had a whole different issue with my claim last year but I just wanted to say I feel your pain with the endless phone calls. The NY unemployment system is seriously the most frustrating thing I've ever dealt with. Hang in there!!

UPDATE: I tried the Claimyr service that someone recommended above and it actually worked! Got through to a real person at NYSDOL in about 25 minutes. The agent was super helpful once I explained everything. She did a three-way call with KeyBank and confirmed my address was different in their system. They're expediting a new card to me that should arrive in 3-5 business days. Such a relief to finally have this resolved! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

That's awesome! So glad it worked out for you! It's crazy how something that should be simple turns into such a nightmare, but glad you finally got it resolved.

Great news! And definitely follow through on setting up direct deposit to your personal bank account once you get the card - it'll prevent this from happening again in the future.
