NY unemployment benefits minus $300 - keep claiming or file new claim?
I just got my unemployment payment and noticed it's way lower than before. The extra $300 is gone. Do I need to just keep claiming like normal and accept the lower amount? Or am I supposed to file a whole new claim to get back to my regular benefit? The website isn't clear about this and I'm stressing about making rent next month with this reduced amount.

You just keep claiming as normal. The $300 FPUC supplement expired so now you're just getting your regular NY unemployment benefit amount. You don't need to file a new claim unless your benefit year has ended (which would be a year from when you first applied).

•Thank you so much! I was worried I'd done something wrong or missed some new application.

•I know right? Such a huge drop without any warning. Are you going to look for work now or try to hold out?

I thought they were gonna extend those extra benefits again! This is BS. How are we supposed to survive on the regular amount in NYC??

•The regular amount is based on your previous wages. I think it's something like 50% of what you made before, up to a maximum weekly benefit amount. So yeah, it's definitely a big drop from having that extra $300 supplement.

So this is normal and exactly what happened to me too. The supplement program expired, so now we're back to regular benefits. Keep certifying weekly as usual. Your claim remains active until your benefit year ends (check your portal for that date). One thing to consider: if your regular weekly benefit amount seems wrong or too low, you might want to speak with an agent directly. I had an issue where they miscalculated my base period wages. I was trying to call for DAYS with no luck - kept getting disconnected or endless hold. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE But in your case, if the amount matches what you were getting before minus the $300, then everything is correct - just keep claiming as usual.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! My regular amount seems correct based on what I was making before. I'll just keep certifying and try to adjust my budget. Hopefully they bring back some kind of supplement soon.

To provide some clarification: The $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) supplement has ended. Your regular New York state unemployment benefits continue as normal, so you should: 1. Continue certifying weekly 2. Receive your base benefit amount 3. NOT file a new claim unless your benefit year has ended If you file a new claim unnecessarily, it could actually delay your payments while they process and likely deny the duplicate claim. Just keep claiming as usual.

•Is this true even if you were getting PUA before? I thought maybe those people had to reapply for regular UI now that PUA is gone???

@user5 - That's a good question about PUA. If you were specifically on PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance), that program has also ended. In most cases, if you were eligible for PUA, you wouldn't qualify for regular UI (since PUA was designed for those who didn't qualify for standard benefits). You can attempt to apply for regular UI, but be prepared that you might not qualify if your situation hasn't changed from when you originally applied for PUA.

•I was definitely on regular UI, not PUA. I just had the $300 added on top. So sounds like I'm on the right track just keeping my claim going.

The whole system is GARBAGE! They cut off the extra $$ with NO WARNING and expect us to survive on the basic amount. I've been trying to call them for THREE DAYS about why my payment was low and can't get through!!! This is how they treat people??

•If you need to talk to someone urgently, seriously try Claimyr. It's the only thing that worked for me after days of trying. Regular phone lines are completely overwhelmed right now with everyone calling about the same issue.

I've been claiming for 4 months now, and from what I understand you just continue with your regular weekly certification. The system automatically adjusts the amount based on whatever programs are active. It's frustrating to suddenly get less, but at least the regular benefits continue. I'm starting to look for part-time work to make up the difference.

•Yeah I think I'll need to start looking harder for jobs too. Just wish the job market was better right now.
