EDD partial unemployment - can I use existing claim for reduced hours or file new one?
Hi everyone, I just started a new job three weeks ago after being on regular unemployment for about 2 months. The company just announced they're cutting everyone's hours by 30% starting next week "due to economic conditions" 🙄 I still have about 4 months left on my benefit year according to my UI Online account. Do I need to file a whole new claim for partial unemployment because this is a different employer than my original claim? Or can I just start certifying again on my existing claim? Just trying to avoid any mistakes that might delay payments since my rent just went up $250/month. Thanks for any help!

OMG the same thing happened to me last year! it is so frustrating!! when your hours get cut you can just reopen your existing claim as long as ur still in the same benefit year. dont start over! Thats wat they told me when i called

•That's such a relief to hear! Did you have to call them to reopen it or could you do it through UI Online? I tried looking for a "reopen claim" button but couldn't find it...

You don't need to file a new claim if you're still within your benefit year. What you need to do is reopen your existing claim. Here's how: 1. Log into UI Online 2. Click on "Reopen Claim" (it should be under the "Manage Claim" section) 3. Follow the prompts to report your new employment information and reduced hours 4. Once processed, you'll be able to certify for benefits again When you certify, be sure to accurately report ALL earnings for each week - even if your income is higher than your weekly benefit amount for some weeks. The system will automatically calculate if you qualify for partial benefits based on your reported earnings.

•Thank you for such clear instructions! I actually don't see a "Reopen Claim" option anywhere on my UI Online account. The only options I have are "View Payment Information," "Claim History," and "Contact EDD." Am I looking in the wrong place, or could my account be different for some reason?

The UI Online system sucks!!! sometimes the buttons dont even show up right. I had same issue last yr and the website was broken for me too. No reopen button. tried calling 300 times. IMPOSSIBLE!!!

•That's exactly what's happening to me! No reopen button anywhere. How did you eventually fix your claim?

After my hours got cut at the warehouse I tried for almost 2 weeks to get through to EDD with no luck. I kept getting that stupid message saying they were experiencing high call volume. My cousin told me about this service called Claimyr that got him through to an EDD agent in under 30 minutes. I was desperate so I tried it - worth every penny! Got my claim reopened right away. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

•Yeah it's legit. They basically just help you get through the phone system. The EDD rep I talked to said they get calls from Claimyr users all the time. I was skeptical too but was getting nowhere on my own.

To clarify a few important points about partial unemployment: 1. If the "Reopen Claim" button isn't appearing, this typically means either: - Your benefit year has expired (check the exact date) - You have pending certifications that need to be completed first - There's an existing issue on your claim requiring resolution 2. For partial unemployment, the calculation is important to understand: EDD allows you to earn up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount without reduction. After that, each dollar reduces your benefit by a dollar. 3. Make sure your employer reports your reduced hours correctly. Request a written notice of reduction if possible, as this may be needed if there are questions about your eligibility. If the UI Online system isn't showing the reopen option, calling is unfortunately your only option. Try early mornings (8:00 AM) or later afternoons (after 3:00 PM) when call volumes tend to be slightly lower.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. My benefit year definitely hasn't expired (it says I have until January 2026), and I don't have any pending certifications since my claim has been inactive while I was working. I'll check if there are any issues flagged on my account. The 25% earnings threshold is really helpful to know - that will help me calculate what to expect. I'll try calling during the times you suggested!

Sometimes you need to click "Register or Manage Existing Claim" on the homepage instead of going directly to your dashboard. That worked for me when I couldn't find the reopen button. The EDD website is terrible with weird navigation issues.

•I'll try that route! Their website is so inconsistent - I swear buttons appear and disappear randomly. Thanks for the tip!

One more thing!!! When u do get bak on unemployment make SURE u still put in ur work search stuff every week even tho ur technically employed. My friend got in trouble bcuz she didnt do this and they made her pay back $$$!!! The rules are u still gotta be looking for fulltime work even when ur working part time. Its so dum but thats wat they told me

•This is partially correct, but needs clarification. If you're working reduced hours and collecting partial benefits, you still need to be available for full-time work and willing to accept suitable employment. However, if your employer has explicitly stated this reduction is temporary and provided a return-to-full-time date, you can indicate this on your certification. In that specific case, EDD may waive the work search requirement since you have an attachment to your employer. Always answer the certification questions truthfully - misrepresenting your situation can indeed lead to overpayments that must be repaid.

back in 2023 i had same issue and ended up having to just file a new claim even though my benefit year wasnt over yet. the edd rep said something about my base period changing? i'm still confused about what happened but anyway...my payments came through ok

•The rep might have been referring to a potential benefit increase. If you had higher wages during your most recent base period than your original claim was based on, filing a new claim might result in a higher weekly benefit amount. However, this is an exception, not the rule. Generally, reopening an existing claim is the correct approach within the same benefit year.

Update: I used Claimyr this morning after trying to call for 2 days with no luck. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes! She said my account had a weird technical glitch that was hiding the "Reopen Claim" button. She fixed it on her end and now I can see the option. Already submitted my information. Thanks everyone for your help! For anyone with the same issue, definitely call if you can't see the reopen option - it might be a system problem, not user error.

•Yay!!! So glad u got it working. Make sure u keep all ur paystubs from partial work. They sometimes ask for proof of ur hours later. That happened to my cousin.
