NY unemployment backpayment after ID.me verification - will they release it automatically?
I've been waiting on a backpayment from NY unemployment since January 2025. They told me that once they receive confirmation from ID.me that my verification is complete, they would release the payment. I already completed the ID.me verification process about a week ago, but still haven't received anything. Do I need to call them to get my backpayment released, or will they automatically send it once they process the ID.me verification? Has anyone gone through this recently? I'm getting anxious because it's been almost 2 months that I've been waiting for this money.

•Ugh, that's frustrating. I've been trying to call but can't get through. Did you just keep calling over and over?

Call them!!!! The same thing happened to me and I waited almost 3 weeks after doing ID.me before calling. When I finally reached someone they said everything looked fine on their end and then magically the money appeared in my account two days later. Don't wait like I did.

In my experience working with the NYSDOL system, there are often two separate verification processes happening simultaneously. The ID.me verification is external, and while it's necessary, there's still an internal verification that has to happen on the NYSDOL side. Unfortunately, these don't always synchronize automatically. I recommend contacting them directly. When you call, specifically mention that you've completed the ID.me verification and ask if they can check if that information has been properly recorded in their system. Sometimes there's a lag in data transfer between ID.me and NYSDOL's systems, or the information might need to be manually noted in your file. Make sure you have your ID.me confirmation email or screenshot ready when you call, as they might ask for the date and time you completed the verification.

•Thank you for such a detailed explanation! I've been trying to call but keep getting the busy signal or it disconnects me after waiting for an hour. Any tips for actually getting through to a human?

I was stuck in the same situation last month! I had to call every day for a week before finally getting through. The trick that worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this service that basically keeps dialing for you and gets you in the callback queue. Saved me hours of redial frustration. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE When I finally got through, the agent said my ID.me verification had been received but was sitting in a queue waiting for manual review. She pushed it through while I was on the phone and I got my backpay within 48 hours. Definitely worth making the call!

•I hadn't heard of that service before. I'll check out the video. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything that might help me get through!

I had the EXACT same issue after I did my ID.me verification last year!!! I kept thinking it would just process automatically but after waiting 3 weeks I started panicking. When I finally got through (took 4 days of calling constantly), they told me that sometimes the ID.me verification doesn't properly link to your unemployment account. The rep had to manually note in the system that my identity was verified. Did you get an email confirmation from ID.me after completing it? If yes, make sure you have that ready when you call. Also, I would call first thing in the morning, like right when they open. That's when I finally got through. Good luck!!!! The system is SO FRUSTRATING!!!!

To clarify what others have said, here's the exact process that should happen: 1. You complete ID.me verification 2. ID.me sends verification to NYSDOL (typically 1-3 business days) 3. NYSDOL system flags your account for review 4. A claims examiner must manually review and approve the verification 5. After approval, payment is released (typically 2-5 business days) Unfortunately, step 4 is where most delays happen. The system doesn't automatically release payments after ID.me verification - a human needs to review it first. Given that you completed verification a week ago, it's reasonable to call now. Have your confirmation number from ID.me ready, and specifically ask the agent to check if your verification has been received and if it's waiting for examiner review. Also, check your message inbox on your NY.gov account daily, as they sometimes send requests for additional information there without notifying you by email or phone.

•Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I didn't realize there were so many steps after the ID.me verification. I've been checking my inbox but there's nothing new there. I'll definitely call tomorrow morning.

Just a quick follow-up tip: When you call, if you reach an agent who seems unsure about how to help with ID.me verification issues, politely ask to be transferred to a Tier 2 specialist. The frontline agents sometimes don't have the system access needed to see the verification status or to push it through the review process. The Tier 2 specialists have more tools at their disposal for these specific issues.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I wouldn't have known to ask for a Tier 2 specialist.

Any update? Did you get through to them? I'm curious if they're still having the same issues with ID.me that they had when I dealt with them.

•I finally got through today using that Claimyr service someone mentioned! You were all right - the agent said my ID.me verification was received but sitting in a queue waiting for someone to review it. She escalated it and said I should see the payment in 3-5 business days. Fingers crossed! Thank you all for the advice.
