NY unemployment ID verification question - does it start my claim automatically?
Hey everyone, I just completed the ID verification part of my NY unemployment application, but I'm confused about what happens next. Does confirming my ID automatically start my unemployment claim? Or do I need to do something else after the verification goes through? The NYSDOL site wasn't clear and I don't want to mess anything up. Thanks!

No, ID verification is just one step in the process. After your identity is verified, you'll still need to complete the actual application for benefits. Make sure you go back to your dashboard and check for any tasks marked as 'incomplete' - there should be another section for submitting your actual claim information including employment history, reason for separation, etc.

•Thanks! That makes sense. I was worried because I got the email saying "ID successfully verified" but nothing else happened. I'll go back and look for the other sections.

•OK good to know it's going to take a while. I'll set aside some time tomorrow to finish it all up.

The ID verification step is a security measure to prevent fraud, but it doesn't initiate your actual claim. After verification, you need to complete your application with details about your previous employment, reason for unemployment, and earnings history. Once you submit that, you'll get a confirmation number and instructions about when to start certifying weekly. Make sure all documentation is ready before you start - last paystub, employment dates, and contact information for previous employers.

•This is so helpful, thank you!! I just got through the ID part and was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know how long the whole application takes to get approved once everything is submitted?

•Processing times vary, but typically 2-3 weeks if there are no issues with your application. If your employer contests your claim or additional verification is needed, it could take 4-6 weeks.

I struggled with the same thing in January! The NY system is so confusing. The ID verification is just step one. After that's done, you have to complete the actual application which asks about your work history, why you're unemployed, etc. Once THAT'S done, you still have to wait for approval, which took almost 3 weeks for me even though everything was perfect on my application. When I needed to speak with someone about a question, I couldn't get through for days until someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com). It got me a callback from NYSDOL in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - totally worth it when you're stuck with questions about your specific situation.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I didn't realize there were so many steps still to go. I'll check out that service if I get stuck - the NYSDOL phone system is impossible to get through.

•Is that Claimyr thing legit? Seems sketchy to pay for something that should be free...

•It worked for me when I was desperate after trying for a week to get through. They don't replace the unemployment service, they just help you get a callback from the actual NYSDOL agents.

I GOT SO CONFUSED BY THIS TOO!!! I thought my claim was all done after ID verification and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting any payments or emails!!! Turns out I had to go back and do the ACTUAL APPLICATION part. I wasted THREE WEEKS thinking everything was done!!! The system is TERRIBLE and nobody tells you anything!!! Make sure you double-check your dashboard for incomplete tasks!!!!!

•Oh no, that's awful! I'm sorry that happened to you. I'll definitely make sure I complete everything now that I know. Did they backdate your claim at least?

•They did backdate it EVENTUALLY but it took another 2 weeks of calling and explaining over and over again. Such a nightmare dealing with them!!!

When I applied last month, I had to do ID verification first, then the actual claim application, then wait for a determination letter. Everything looked fine on my end but I still got a call from them asking about my last employer. Just FYI so you're not surprised if they call.

One more important thing to remember: after you complete the full application and get approved, you still need to certify weekly to receive benefits. Many people miss this step and wonder why they aren't getting paid. Set a reminder on your phone for the same day each week to log in and certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I'll set a reminder once I get approved. Does it matter which day of the week I certify?

•You can certify any day during your claim week (Sunday through Saturday), but doing it early in the week (Sunday-Monday) usually means you get paid faster. The system allows certification 24/7, but it's best to avoid high-traffic times like Sunday mornings when the system might be slower.

Just want to echo what everyone else has said - ID verification is definitely just the first step! I made the same mistake last year and sat around waiting for benefits after only doing the ID part. You'll need to go back to your NY.gov account and complete the full application with all your employment details. Pro tip: have your Social Security card, driver's license, and last few paystubs ready before you start the main application - it makes the process much smoother. The whole thing took me about an hour to complete properly. Good luck!

•Thank you so much for the pro tip about having all the documents ready! I was just planning to wing it but I'll definitely gather everything first. An hour doesn't sound too bad if I'm prepared. Did you run into any issues during the application process, or was it pretty straightforward once you had all your paperwork?
