NY Unemployment claim stuck for months - contacting representatives actually worked!
Just wanted to share what finally worked for me after my claim sat in limbo for nearly 3 months. After endless phone calls to unemployment that went nowhere, I finally contacted my state assemblyperson's office last Tuesday. Their staff took my info and said they'd reach out to DOL on my behalf. By Friday morning, I got a call directly from a DOL supervisor who reviewed my case on the spot! They found that my claim had been flagged incorrectly due to my previous employer contesting it (even though I was laid off in a company downsizing). The supervisor manually released all my backpay (about $5,800) and it hit my account yesterday. If your stuck waiting for unemployment benefits and getting nowhere with regular customer service, PLEASE contact your local representatives - both state senator and assembly person. It's literally their job to help with government agencies, and they have direct channels that bypass the regular customer service mess. I wish I'd done this in May instead of waiting until July banging my head against the wall with the regular phone lines.

This is so true! After two months of nonstop calling and getting absolutely nowhere with ny unemployment, I was desperate. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual agent within hours. The agent was able to release all my funds that had been stuck 'pending' for some ridiculous ID verification issue. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast, it was the only way I could talk to a live person after weeks of trying. https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Yeah its 100% real! They basically call unemployment for you and when they finally get thru to an agent, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me hours of hearing the busy signal and that annoying automated message over and over

•another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

•Not fixing the system, just helping you get through to an actual human who CAN fix your specific issue. Big difference! My backpay hit my account 2 days after I finally talked to someone.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? Been trying to reach someone for weeks

•It worked for me! I was super skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. They don't solve your claim issues - they just get you through to someone who can.

I've been tellin people this for months!!!! The regular phone lines are a complete waste of time. My state senator's office got my issue fixed in like a week after I spent 2 months trying on my own. They have a special liaison who deals directly with unemployment.

•Who did you contact exactly? I'm in Queens and have no idea who my rep even is

•Just google "find my NY state senator" - put in your address and it'll tell you who represents you. Call their office and say you need help with your unemployment claim.

•This actually works! My assemblyman's office has a person who ONLY handles unemployment issues now cuz so many people are having problems

This 100% works but you need to be persistent and professional. I emailed my state assemblyperson AND senator (do both!) with my full name, address, last 4 of SSN, and a brief explanation of my issue. Got a call from DOL 4 days later. BE NICE to the rep staff - they're drowning in cases.

What information did you give the representatives office? I've been stuck in PENDING for almost 4 months and I'm about to be evicted. I've called unemployment so many times that I have the menu options memorized but never get through to an actual person. I'm desperate at this point.

•I gave them my full name, phone #, address, claim ID number, and last 4 of SSN. Also a brief description of my issue (2-3 sentences). The key is to be super clear and concise - they're handling tons of these cases.

omg YESSS! 👏👏👏 I DID THE SAME THING! called my assembly person after my claim was stuck for 9 weeks and they fixed it in less than a week! the unemployment phone system is completely broken... never would have figured this out on my own.

I'm gonna be the voice of reality here. I contacted my rep THREE TIMES and got zero help. They just sent me a form letter saying "we'll look into it" and nothing happened. This might work for some people but it's not a guarantee.

•Same. My rep's office said they were overwhelmed with unemployment cases. Maybe depends on your district?

•That sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe try your other rep? I contacted both my senator and assembly person - the senator's office was the one that got it done for me.

•Try reaching out to a different office maybe? My assembly person did nothing but my state senator's office got it fixed in a week.

•Have you tried using claimyr.com? They get you through to an actual agent on the phone. Fixed my issue when my rep's office ghosted me.

I work for a state rep (not in NY) and can confirm this is 100% the move. We have special contacts at every agency that regular people don't have access to. Unemployment issues are like 60% of our casework right now. Just be nice and patient with the staff - we're trying our best to help everyone!

•Just doing our job! But yeah unemployment systems across the country are a mess right now. The agencies are overwhelmed but electeds can help cut through the red tape.

I'm having the opposite issue - getting paid when I shouldnt be! I returned to work 6 weeks ago but NY unemployment keeps depositing money every week even though I stopped certifying. I've called 50+ times and can't get thru to anyone to fix it. Now I'm worried I'll owe it all back with penalties 😱

•DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! Save those records showing you stopped certifying. And definitely try the state rep approach too for this - you need to get this fixed ASAP.

•Try claimyr.com to get a callback from an agent. Worth every penny when you need to talk to someone urgently. Got me through in hours after weeks of trying.

•Thx for the advice! I'll try both approaches. Just terrified of getting hit with an overpayment notice months from now 😬

THIS THIS THIS!!! 💯 The unemployment system is DESIGNED to be impossible to navigate. They are COUNTING on people giving up. DO NOT GIVE UP! Your representatives have staff whose entire job is helping constituents deal with state agencies. USE THEM!

I had totally given up after 3 months of trying to get through. Had to borrow money from family to pay rent. Then I saw a post like this, called my assemblyman, and my claim was fixed in 9 days! $8400 in backpay hit my account all at once. I literally cried. THANK YOU for sharing this info.

Anyone else notice how the unemployment website conveniently "goes down for maintenance" EVERY SINGLE NIGHT from like 7pm-7am? Almost like they're trying to make it harder for working people to access benefits... 🤔

•PREACH 👏 The whole system is designed to be as frustrating and inaccessible as possible. It's not broken, it's working exactly as intended.

I've found the absolute best comprehensive approach to dealing with NY unemployment issues: 1) Contact BOTH your state senator AND assembly member (find them by searching your address). Email AND call - be professional and provide all relevant details. 2) If you need to speak directly with DOL, use claimyr.com - they'll get you a callback with an actual agent instead of wasting hours on hold. Talking to a real person solves problems that emails never will. 3) Document EVERYTHING. Dates of calls, names of representatives, confirmation numbers, screenshots of your account, etc. 4) Follow up weekly with your representative's office - politely but persistently. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. 5) If your case is particularly complicated or involves identity verification, try requesting a callback through the DOL website specifically for that issue. I've helped several friends navigate this system, and a combination of these approaches has worked every time. The system is frustrating by design - don't give up!

Just adding another voice to say THIS WORKED FOR ME TOO! My claim was pending for FIVE MONTHS and I was about to lose my apartment. Called my state senator's office and they had it fixed in 8 days. Got almost $12,000 in backpay all at once. If you're struggling, CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES!

u kno whats crazy? I just got an email today saying I was overpaid $9800 from 2021 and need to pay it back!!! I reported everything correctly when I was unemployed. how are they just now finding "mistakes" years later?? anyone else dealing with this BS?

Lilly Curtis
•Yup - they did this to my sister. She appealed and won because they messed up, not her. APPEAL THIS and contact your state reps!

•thanks, I'm definitely going to appeal. did your sister have to get a lawyer or anything?

•No lawyer - she just appealed and provided all her documentation showing she reported everything correctly. But she also contacted her state senator who helped push it through faster.

Another trick: call right when they open at 8am. I got through after only 20 minutes on hold that way. Later in the day it's impossible.
