Is NYS Department of Labor unemployment office open on MLK Day?
I need to call the NYS Department of Labor about my unemployment claim but I'm not sure if they're open today for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. My weekly claim certification is due tomorrow and I have questions about reporting some part-time work I did last week. Does anyone know if the unemployment offices are closed for federal holidays? I tried calling but just got a busy signal.

NYS Department of Labor offices are closed today for MLK Day. It's a federal holiday so all government offices including unemployment are closed. You can still file your weekly claim online though - the my.ny.gov website should be working normally.

•Thanks! I was able to file online but I'm still confused about how to report the part-time earnings. Do I report gross or net pay?

For reporting part-time earnings, you always report the gross amount (before taxes) for the week you actually worked, not when you got paid. Make sure you report it in the correct week or it could cause issues with your claim later.

•That's really helpful, thank you! I worked Tuesday through Thursday last week so I'll report it for that certification week.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone even when they're open, I had success using a service called Claimyr at claimyr.com. They help you get connected to an actual agent without waiting on hold forever. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that before. Did they actually get you through to someone who could help with your claim?

•Yes, I was connected within about 15 minutes to a real NYS Department of Labor representative who was able to resolve my adjudication issue. Much better than the 2+ hours I was spending trying to call myself.
