How to check status of unemployment claim - NYS Department of Labor account issues
I filed my unemployment claim about 10 days ago and I'm trying to figure out how to check the status but I'm having trouble navigating the NYS Department of Labor website. Every time I log into my.ny.gov it just shows my basic info but I can't find where it actually tells me if my claim was approved or denied. The status just says 'claim filed' but that doesn't tell me much. I tried calling but the wait times are insane. Is there a specific section I should be looking at to see if my claim is being processed or if there are any issues? I really need to know if I should be expecting payments soon or if something is wrong.

Once you log into my.ny.gov, go to the 'Unemployment Insurance Services' section and look for 'View Payment History' or 'Claim Summary'. Your status should show as either 'Pending', 'Adjudication', 'Approved', or 'Denied'. If it says 'Adjudication' that means they're reviewing something about your claim and it could take 2-4 weeks. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if the status is pending.

•Thanks! I found the claim summary section and it does say 'Pending Adjudication' so I guess that explains the delay. Should I be worried about this or is it normal?

Adjudication is pretty common, especially if you had any job separations that weren't straightforward layoffs. They might be verifying your work history or checking with your former employer. The key thing is to keep filing your weekly claims and respond immediately if they send you any questionnaires or requests for information. Check your my.ny.gov messages regularly because that's how they'll contact you if they need anything.

•This exactly! I missed a message from NYS Department of Labor asking for more info and it delayed my claim by another month. Set up email notifications if you can.

I had the same issue trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about my claim status. The phone system is absolutely terrible - I'd get disconnected after waiting for hours. I ended up using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual NYS Department of Labor agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. It was way easier than trying to call myself and I finally got answers about my adjudication status.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything is better than sitting on hold forever just to get hung up on

the nys unemployment website is such garbage honestly. been trying to check my status for weeks and half the time the site doesn't even load properly. why can't they just send email updates like every other government agency??

•I feel this so much. The whole system feels like it's from 2005

Hey Mason, I went through this exact same situation last month. In addition to what others mentioned about checking the Claim Summary section, also make sure to look at the "Correspondence" tab in your account - sometimes they'll post important updates there that don't show up elsewhere. If you're in adjudication, it usually means they're just verifying your employment details with your previous employer. The frustrating part is it can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how quickly your employer responds to their inquiry. But definitely keep certifying weekly even while it's pending - you'll get backpay for those weeks once it's approved.

•This is really helpful advice! I didn't know about the Correspondence tab - I'll definitely check that. It's reassuring to hear that 2-6 weeks is normal for adjudication. I was starting to panic that something was seriously wrong with my application. Thanks for mentioning the backpay too, that's good to know I won't lose those weeks if I keep certifying.

I'm dealing with this same frustrating situation right now. One thing that helped me was creating a simple tracking system - I write down the date I check my account and what status it shows, because sometimes small changes happen that you might miss. Also, if you have a local career center or workforce development office, some of them have staff who can help navigate the NYS system or even make calls on your behalf. It's worth checking if your county has any unemployment assistance programs. The waiting is really stressful but hang in there!

•That's a great idea about keeping a tracking log! I never thought to document the status changes but that makes total sense - it would help catch any updates I might otherwise miss. Do you know if the local career centers can actually call NYS DOL on your behalf? I had no idea that was even possible. My county has a One-Stop Career Center so I might give them a try. Thanks for the tip about workforce development offices too - anything is better than waiting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

I just went through this exact process and wanted to share what worked for me. When you're in the "Pending Adjudication" status, try checking your account at different times of day - I noticed the system updates most frequently in the early morning (around 6-8 AM) and late evening. Also, if you haven't already, make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly in the "Payment Method" section because that can cause delays even after approval. One more tip - screenshot your weekly certification confirmations just in case there are any system glitches later. The whole process is definitely stressful but most claims do get approved eventually, especially if you were laid off through no fault of your own.

•Same here! The waiting is the worst part. How long have you been waiting? I'm at about 3 weeks in adjudication and trying not to stress about it but it's hard when you need the money.

I'm in a similar boat - filed about 2 weeks ago and stuck in the "Pending Adjudication" status. One thing I learned from calling the Department of Labor (after many attempts) is that you can also check for updates in the "Determinations" section of your account. Sometimes decisions get posted there before the main status changes. Also, if you worked for multiple employers in the past 18 months, that can add to the adjudication time since they have to verify with each one. The rep told me to expect 4-6 weeks total for my case since I had 3 different jobs last year. It's frustrating but at least we know we're not alone in this process!

•Thanks for mentioning the "Determinations" section - I had no idea that existed! Just checked and mine is still empty but good to know that's another place to look for updates. The multiple employers thing makes sense too, I worked for 2 different companies in the past year so that's probably adding to my wait time. 4-6 weeks feels like forever when you're stressed about bills but it helps to have realistic expectations. At least you were able to get through to someone on the phone - that gives me hope that persistence might eventually pay off!

I'm going through the exact same thing right now - filed 2 weeks ago and also stuck at "claim filed" status. Reading through all these comments is actually really helpful because I was starting to think something was wrong with my application. I had no idea about the Correspondence tab or the Determinations section, so I'm definitely going to check those. The adjudication process sounds really stressful but at least it seems like most people eventually get approved. I've been avoiding calling because of the horror stories about wait times, but maybe I should try the early morning suggestion someone mentioned. It's reassuring to know that keeping up with weekly certifications during the wait is important - I was wondering if I should keep doing those. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it really helps to know we're all dealing with the same frustrating system!

•You're definitely not alone in this! I just went through the same process and it's so frustrating how little information they give you upfront about what to expect. The weekly certifications are super important to keep doing - I almost stopped when I was stuck in adjudication for a month, but thankfully someone here told me to keep going. One thing that helped my anxiety was setting specific times to check (like once in the morning and once at night) instead of obsessively refreshing all day. The early morning calling tip is gold - I finally got through around 7:30 AM after weeks of trying during normal hours. Hang in there, most of us do eventually get through this maze of a system!
