Does NY unemployment send letters for virtual hearing dates?

I received a message saying my unemployment claim needs a hearing, but I'm confused about how this works. The message appeared on my online account dashboard last week but didn't give any specific date for when the hearing would happen. I tried calling the regular unemployment number but couldn't get through to anyone who could explain the process. Has anyone gone through a virtual hearing recently? Do they mail an official letter with the date and time, or do they just post it online somewhere? I've been checking my email and mail every day but still haven't received anything with details. It's been about 10 days since the hearing notice appeared on my account. I really need to know if I'm supposed to be doing something to schedule this or if they'll contact me. Don't want to miss it and lose my benefits.

Yeah they def mail you a letter with the date and time. I had a hearing back in October for an employment dispute. The letter came about 2 weeks after the online notice. It has instructions for how to join the virtual meeting and what documents to have ready. Make sure your address is updated in the system!

After weeks of trying to reach someone at ny unemployment through their phone system (complete disaster btw), I found this service called Claimyr that completely changed the game for me. Basically they call unemployment FOR you, wait on hold, then connect you once they get a real person. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent! Saved me from losing my mind on hold music lol. Here's a link to their explainer: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? Sounds too good to be true. How does it even work?

Yeah totally works! They basically have a system that dials repeatedly and stays on hold so you don't have to. Then when a human answers they call your phone. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast after months of nothing.

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? I've tried like 10 different 'tricks' to get thru to unemployment...

I was super skeptical too but it actually connected me to a real person! After 3 months of trying to reach someone, I finally got through and resolved my issue in one call. Check out claimyr.com

they SHOULD send a letter but with how messed up everything is rn, don't count on it. call them every day until you get someone who can tell you the date. i almost missed my hearing bc the letter arrived 2 days before the actual date. system is completely broken.

Same here! Letter arrived literally the day before my hearing. Had to scramble to get all my documents together.

That's what I'm afraid of. Did you try calling a specific number or just the regular unemployment line?

i called the regular number like 50 times. finally got through on a thursday around 3pm. seems like thats a slightly better time to call.

I had a hearing in June and they sent the notice through both mail AND email. Check your spam folder too. The virtual hearing was actually pretty straightforward - just make sure you have all your documentation uploaded ahead of time. They give you a link to a website where you can submit evidence before the hearing date.

I've been checking my spam folder every day but nothing yet. How long before your hearing date did you get the notification?

About 2 weeks before. But I've heard they're backed up now so maybe it's taking longer? Definitely keep checking. And if you don't receive anything within another week, try calling again.

Here's the COMPLETE process for NY unemployment hearings (I work in HR and help employees with this all the time): 1. Initial hearing notice appears on your online account 2. Official scheduling letter is mailed 10-14 days before hearing date 3. Email notification is SUPPOSED to be sent too, but system often fails 4. Hearing documentation must be submitted at least 3 business days before 5. Virtual hearings are conducted through a specific portal (not Zoom) 6. You need to check in 15 minutes early 7. Have ALL your documentation ready - paystubs, separation notice, communication with employer If you haven't received anything after 2 weeks, you NEED to contact them. The only reliable way I've found to reach a human is through claimyr.com - it's a service that calls for you and connects once an agent is on the line. Worth every penny compared to spending days trying to get through. Don't wait - if you miss the hearing, it's extremely difficult to get it rescheduled and you could lose benefits.

This is incredibly helpful! Thank you so much. I'll give it one more week and then try that service if I don't hear anything.

Can confirm this is accurate. Had my hearing last month and this matches my experience exactly.

Great info! I'd add that they're running about 3 weeks behind schedule right now due to staffing issues, at least that's what an agent told me last week.

ny unemployment is a joke. they scheduled my hearing then canceled it without telling me. wasted a whole day waiting. then they rescheduled and i had to take another day off work. absolute 🤡 show.

My experience: got notice online, letter came 12 days later, hearing was scheduled for the following week. BUT!! The virtual link in the letter didn't work! Had to call tech support and almost missed my hearing. Make sure to test the link as soon as you get it!

omg this happened to me too! The link was broken and I had to call that special tech support number. So stressful.

It's on the bottom of the hearing notice letter. Can't remember it offhand but they were actually pretty helpful.

if you can, try to MAIL them a letter asking about your hearing date. seems old school but i've had better luck getting responses that way than calling. send it certified so you know they got it.

That's actually a really good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Where exactly should I mail it to?

Use the appeals dept address on the NYSDOL website. And write your claim ID number BIG on the envelope and letter. Makes it more likely to get to right person.

you might want to check if theres a communication preference set on your account. I switched mine to electronic only, so I never got physical mail, everything came to my email (including hearing notices

As a former unemployment insurance specialist i can tell you exactly how this process works. Hearing notices are auto-generated and sent via usps mail. They are NOT sent by email (though they should be). There should be at least 10 business days notice. If you got that message on your dashboard CALL IMMEDIATELY. Dont wait. They wont be proactive in fixing issues. Use claimyr.com if you cant get thru. Hearings are scheduled based on the type of case and current backlog.

Do you know if there's a way to check the hearing date online? Or is calling really the only option?

Unfortunately the online system doesnt show hearing dates. Its a design flaw we complained about for years. Calling is your only option unless the letter arrives.

Everyone has diff experiences with this. I got my letter 3 weeks after the dashboard notice. My sister got hers in 4 days. Seems totally random how they handle it. Just keep checking mail and dont throw ANYTHING away without reading it carefully 😂

So true! My roommate and I both had hearings, I got an email, she got a letter. Same office, different processes 🤔

Bro I swear NY unemployment does this on purpose, they make it confusing so people miss deadlines and they can deny benefits 😤 Fight the system! Document EVERYTHING and take screenshots of all your notices.

UPDATE: I was in the exact same situation last month, finally got my letter yesterday. Took about 3 weeks from the dashboard notice. Hearing is scheduled for next Friday. System is slow af right now due to all the layoffs happening.

im going through this right now too!!!! so annoying. finally had to have my state rep's office call them to get the date because they never sent the letter. might be worth contacting your local representative if you keep hitting walls.

This! Your state rep's office can work wonders. They have special contacts at unemployment.

how do you find your state rep? and what info do you need to give them?

just google "NY state representative" + your address. you'll need your claim ID, contact info, and a brief explanation of your issue. they have caseworkers who handle this stuff all day.

My virtual hearing was actually pretty painless once I got the date sorted out. Judge was super nice and the whole thing took like 20 minutes. My employer didn't even show up lol. But getting the actual info beforehand was a NIGHTMARE.
