Can I still claim my ny unemployment benefits from 3 weeks ago?

So I haven't been able to claim my unemployment benefits for about 3 weeks now. I had to travel out of state to help my sister who got in a car accident and needed someone to watch her kids while she was in the hospital. I completely forgot to claim my benefits during this time. Just got back to NY yesterday and tried to claim for the past weeks but the system is only letting me claim for this current week. Is there a way to claim those missing weeks? Anyone know how long I have before those payments are gone forever? Really need that money to catch up on rent since I had to use my savings while helping my sister.

You have up to one week after the end of the benefit week to certify. After that, you need to request backdated payments. Call the ny unemployment office and explain your situation. You'll need to provide a good reason for not claiming on time (which you have). You'll probably have to fill out a form too.

Just a heads up, family emergency is usually considered a valid reason so you should be fine. Keep documentation of your travel if you have it.

this is correct. you need to request backdated certification within 30 days or youll lose the money for good!

I had the same issue last month. I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a live agent without waiting forever. Basically they call the unemployment office for you and when they get through to a real person, they connect you. I was able to backdate my claims and get all my missed payments. Best money I've ever spent since I got all my back pay in a few days. Check them out at claimyr.com or watch their explanation video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Is this for real? The ny unemployment phone system is notoriously impossible to get through. How exactly does this work?

Yeah it's totally real. They basically have a system that calls and navigates through all the phone menus and stays on hold for you. Then when a human finally answers, they connect you immediately. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days.

sounds too good to be true... another 'miracle solution' for the broken unemployment system 🙄

I get why you're skeptical - I was too! But honestly after trying to get through for 2 weeks myself, this was the only thing that worked. I got an agent in about 35 minutes while I was just chilling watching TV.

wait i think my cousin used this! she kept raving about it after fighting with the phone system for weeks. might give it a shot myself

You have 30 days from the last day of the week you're trying to claim. So if the week ended on a Sunday, you have 30 days from that Sunday to request backdated certification. But you CANNOT do it online - you MUST call and speak to a rep.

The whole system is such a joke 🤡 Making it nearly impossible to talk to someone but then requiring a phone call for anything outside the most basic functions. It's like they're designed to make you give up and lose your benefits.

for real! spent like 6 hours on hold last week only to get disconnected. NY unemployment system is broken beyond belief 🤬

This is why I always tell everyone to certify EVERY WEEK no matter what. Even if you have to call from another state, hospitals have phones too. No excuses or you'll get screwed by the system.

@profile12 Wow that's harsh. Sometimes life happens and people have ACTUAL EMERGENCIES like OP did. Not everyone can make unemployment their top priority when family members are in the hospital.

Here's everything you need to know about requesting backdated payments with NY unemployment: First - you need to call and explain your situation. Family emergency is a valid reason, especially with a hospitalized family member. The agent will likely have you complete a form called a "Request for Backdated Claim." You need to do this within 30 days of the week ending date of the missed week. So if you missed claiming for the week ending May 7th, you have until June 6th to request backdated certification. Getting through on the phone is the hardest part. I tried for weeks with no luck until I found claimyr.com - they call for you and connect you when a live agent answers. Saved me hours of frustration and I got all my backdated benefits within days after speaking with an agent. Also important - DOCUMENT EVERYTHING! Have the dates of your travel, any hospital documentation if possible, and be ready to provide this information when you talk to the agent. Good luck!

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I have all my travel receipts and some hospital visitor passes so that should work as documentation. Gonna try that calling service tomorrow.

This is super helpful info. Do you know if they make you fill out a different form for each week you missed, or is it just one form for all backdated weeks?

In my experience it was one form for all the weeks, but they did have me verbally certify for each individual week over the phone. Just be honest about your work search activities for those weeks.

Trust me, youre NOT alone! The DOL makes this process confusing on purpose. If enough people give up on claiming backdated benefits it saves them millions.

Whatever you do DONT just give up on those weeks! That's YOUR money that you're entitled to. Call until you get through. Be persistent.

💯 this right here! I almost gave up on 5 weeks of payments but finally got through and got all my money. worth the fight.

Pro tip: try calling right when they open at 8am. I've had better luck getting through then versus midday. Also avoid Mondays if possible - those are the worst days to call.

This used to work but not anymore. I tried calling at exactly 8:00:00 and still got the 'too many callers' message and disconnected 😩

If all else fails and you cant get through on the phone, try reaching out to your state representative or senator. Their offices can sometimes help push your case through. Worked for me when I was desperate.

the deadline is 30 days but even if ur past that deadline, still call and explain ur situation. sometimes they make exceptions especially for medical/family emergencies.

Can confirm. I was 40 days late due to being in the hospital myself and they still approved my backdated certification after I provided documentation.

Anyone else notice that the ny unemployment website says one thing about deadlines but then when you talk to an actual rep they tell you something completely different? It's so frustrating!

THIIIIIS!! The website said I couldn't backdate but then a rep told me I could and helped me do it. The lack of clear information is maddening.

its because they want you to give up. less people getting benefits = more money they save.
