Can I extend New York Unemployment after medical issues prevent work? Senior with 44 years work history
I've been collecting unemployment for 6 months. I can't return to work due to cancer medical issues in my leg. I'm 71 and have worked for 44 years, but nobody's hiring me now. Can I extend or reapply for benefits after my current claim ends?

Unfortunately regular unemployment isn't meant for medical issues - you might want to look into disability benefits instead. NY has short term disability that could help in your situation. When you cant work due to medical, UI usually won't approve an extension.

•How do I apply for disability? The unemployment office keeps giving me the run around

•you'll need to contact NYS disability office directly and get documentation from your doctor about your condition

Hey, I had trouble reaching someone about switching from UI to disability too. I used claimyr.com to get through - it costs $20 but they dial and wait on hold, then connect you when someone picks up. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

With your work history, you might qualify for early Social Security benefits too. My mom was in a similar situation and that helped her bridge the gap 💯

You should really speak with a disability attorney. Many will do free consultations and can help navigate all this bureaucratic bs. Theres probably benefits ur eligible for that u dont even know about

Ur gonna need to apply for different benefits fam. Here's what you should do: 1. Get medical documentation from your doctor about your condition and work limitations 2. Apply for NY State Disability Benefits - call them using claimyr.com to get through faster 3. Check Social Security Disability (SSDI) eligibility since you have extensive work history 4. Look into early retirement benefits 5. Consider supplemental security income (SSI) UI benefits usually max at 26 weeks in NY and extensions aren't available rn. But there are other programs to help! Don't give up 💪
