One thing to keep in mind is the monetary requirements - you need to have earned enough wages during your base period to qualify for benefits. For 2025, you generally need at least $2,600 in one quarter of your base period AND total base period wages of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter. If you don't meet the regular base period requirements, they might be able to use an alternate base period that includes more recent wages.
Don't forget you'll also need to be able to prove you're actively looking for work once you start collecting. The NYS Department of Labor requires you to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a record of your job search activities. They can ask to see your job search log at any time, so start keeping track from day one!
Whatever you do, DON'T put anything about quitting or resignation even if you felt pressured to leave. Stick with the layoff terminology your company used. I made that mistake on my first claim years ago and it created a whole mess with adjudication.
I had a nightmare trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor when I was dealing with this transition. Kept getting busy signals and when I finally got through, they'd hang up after being on hold forever. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person at the unemployment office. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to call myself.
Yeah definitely separate programs. I work in benefits admin and see this confusion all the time. Short term disability is usually through private insurance or employer plans, while unemployment is a state program. The eligibility requirements are totally different - one requires you to be unable to work, the other requires you to be able to work but unemployed.
Wait so if I do any work at all I have to report it?? Even like helping my neighbor with their computer for $50? This system is so complicated UGH

unemployment is good because otherwise people would riot when the economy crashes lol. also gives companies more flexibility to lay people off during slow periods without completely screwing over workers

•While that's a somewhat cynical way to put it, there is truth to unemployment benefits providing economic stability during recessions and helping maintain social cohesion.

Just wanted to say thanks for asking this question - I was wondering the same thing but felt dumb asking. Good to know I'm not the only one who didn't understand how this all works!
