THANK GOD someone asked this because I'm in the exact same boat! Got laid off yesterday and have been stressing about money. This thread is already helping me understand what I need to do next.
One thing I wish someone told me when I first filed - if you have trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone (which happens A LOT), there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps you reach them. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me hours of busy signals when I had questions about my claim status.
ive been thru this before and the hardest part isnt getting approved its actually getting thru to someone at nys department of labor when you have questions!! their phone lines are always busy and sometimes you wait on hold for hours just to get hung up on
I had the same problem last year when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Couldn't reach anyone for weeks until someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com). They actually got me through to a real NYS Department of Labor agent in under 10 minutes. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration trying to call on my own.
Just want to add that even if you're part-time you might still qualify for partial unemployment benefits if your hours got cut. A lot of people don't realize this. Also if you're on standby from your employer (temporarily laid off but expected to return) there's a different process for that through NYS Department of Labor.
The system is broken. I know people who've been collecting UI for months and they're worse off than when they started. Meanwhile the NYS Department of Labor makes you jump through hoops just to get what you're entitled to. And don't even get me started on the overpayment notices they send out randomly.
One thing that helped me was creating a strict budget based on my UI payment amount and sticking to it religiously. I also took advantage of every free resource I could find - food banks, utility assistance programs, free job training through Workforce One. It's not ideal but it helped bridge the gap until I found work again.

•No, the original poster is asking about when the state releases unemployment rate statistics - like the overall jobless rate for New York. That's different from individual benefit calculations.

If you need to contact NYS Department of Labor directly about data releases or have specific questions about their methodology, I had luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually get through to someone. They helped me connect with the right department when I was doing economic research last year. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. Does it actually work for non-claim related questions?
